Chapter 47 - The Western Sanctuary - The Heart of the Sanctuary

The three knocks continued to echo through the chamber.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

No one moved.

Tez stared at the sealed stone door.

Behind it was a voice he had never heard with his own ears, yet Vaidehi had recognized it instantly.

Her mother.

Maitreyi.

Alive.

At least, that was what they wanted to believe.

Vaidehi stepped forward.

"Ma?"

Her voice trembled.

No answer came.

She touched the cold stone.

"Ma, it's me."

For several heartbeats, there was only silence.

Then the voice returned.

"Vaidehi..."

Vaidehi covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Mother."

Devadatta turned toward her.

"Don't open the door."

Vaidehi looked at him.

"Why?"

"I don't know what is behind it."

"You said she was alive."

"I said she entered the sanctuary."

"You knew she was here."

"I knew she had come here."

Vaidehi's voice became angry.

"You knew she might be alive, and you never told me?"

Devadatta lowered his eyes.

"I was trying to protect you."

"Everyone keeps saying that."

She wiped away her tears.

"Everyone protects me by hiding the truth."

Tez stepped beside her.

"Not anymore."

Vaidehi looked at him.

Tez faced his father.

"We open the door."

Devadatta shook his head.

"No."

The First Shadow smiled.

"There."

He pointed toward the ancient seal.

"Now you see the difference between us."

Devadatta turned sharply.

"You know nothing about what lies beyond that door."

"I know more than you think."

The Truth of the First Sanctuary

Tez looked between them.

"Enough."

His voice filled the chamber.

"I have spent too long being told half-truths."

He raised the Guardian Seal.

"I want everything."

Devadatta stared at him.

Tez continued.

"Why was Suryanagari destroyed?"

"Why did my father disappear?"

"Why did Maitreyi come here?"

"Why does the Black Eclipse want me?"

"And what is behind that door?"

Devadatta remained silent.

The First Shadow answered instead.

"The Heart."

Tez looked at him.

"What is it?"

"A source of knowledge."

"That doesn't explain anything."

The First Shadow walked toward the wall.

"It is not a treasure."

"It is not gold."

"It is not a weapon in the ordinary sense."

He placed his hand on an ancient carving.

"The Heart is a collection of knowledge preserved by the first civilization of this land."

"Knowledge of medicine."

"Stars."

"Water."

"Metals."

"Architecture."

"War."

"Peace."

"And something even more dangerous."

Tez asked,

"What?"

The First Shadow looked at him.

"Knowledge of how power can be controlled."

Devadatta finally spoke.

"And that is why it must never belong to one ruler."

The First Shadow nodded.

"On that, at least, we agree."

The Seven Guardians

Devadatta walked toward the wall.

He touched seven carved figures.

"The first Guardians were not kings."

"They were teachers, healers, farmers, warriors, scholars and spiritual seekers."

"They believed knowledge belonged to humanity."

"But they also knew that knowledge could be misused."

"So they created the Sanctuary."

Tez looked at the seven figures.

"And chose families to protect it."

"Yes."

"Seven bloodlines."

"Seven duties."

"Seven oaths."

Vaidehi looked at the carvings.

"What happened to them?"

Devadatta's face became grave.

"Some remained loyal."

"Some became ambitious."

"Some were destroyed."

"And some disappeared."

Tez understood.

"The Black Eclipse."

Devadatta nodded.

"The Black Eclipse is not a separate evil that appeared recently."

"It grew from the corruption of the old Guardian order."

The First Shadow added,

"And that is the truth your father never wanted you to hear."

Devadatta looked at him.

"Because truth without understanding can become another weapon."

The First Shadow's Story

Tez turned toward the stranger.

"You said you were a Guardian."

"I was."

"What was your name?"

The man remained silent.

Arivaan stepped forward.

"His name was Rudran."

Tez looked at him.

"The same Rudranath?"

Arivaan nodded.

"The man who betrayed the first Guardians."

Rudran smiled.

"That is the story they tell."

"What is your story?"

Rudran looked at the ancient paintings.

"My story is that the Guardians became weak."

"They gathered knowledge but refused to use it."

"They watched kings fight over water."

"They watched villages starve."

"They watched armies destroy cities."

"And they did nothing."

Devadatta interrupted.

"Because the Guardians were not rulers."

Rudran looked at him.

"Perhaps that was their mistake."

Tez listened carefully.

For the first time, he understood why Rudran had followers.

A dangerous person was not always someone who spoke only lies.

Sometimes the most dangerous person was someone who mixed truth with lies.

Rudran continued.

"I wanted the knowledge to be used."

"The others wanted it hidden."

"So we fought."

"And the Sanctuary was divided."

"Your father chose secrecy."

"I chose action."

Tez asked,

"And Suryanagari?"

Rudran's expression changed.

"I did not order its destruction."

Tez stared at him.

"Then who did?"

Rudran looked toward Devadatta.

"Ask him."

The Forgotten Decision

Tez turned to his father.

"Is that true?"

Devadatta's silence was answer enough.

Tez stepped toward him.

"You knew something about the attack."

Devadatta looked exhausted.

"I knew the Black Eclipse was coming."

"You knew?"

"I received a warning."

"Then why didn't you evacuate everyone?"

"I tried."

"Not enough."

Devadatta's eyes filled with pain.

"I failed."

Tez's anger rose.

"People died."

"I know."

"My mother disappeared."

"I know."

"Our home burned."

"I know."

"And you knew it could happen."

Devadatta closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Tez stepped back.

For a moment, he felt like the boy he had once been.

Angry.

Lost.

Abandoned.

But then Devadatta said something that stopped him.

"I was not protecting the Sanctuary from the Black Eclipse."

"I was protecting you from the Sanctuary."

Tez froze.

"What?"

Devadatta looked at him.

"Your birth was discovered."

"By whom?"

"The Black Eclipse."

"And?"

"They learned that your bloodline was the final key."

Tez stared at his hands.

"That's why."

"Yes."

"You sent me away?"

"I did."

"You knew the village might fall?"

"I hoped it wouldn't."

"But you chose me over everyone."

Devadatta's eyes filled with tears.

"I chose my son."

Tez had no answer.

The Door Opens

Suddenly, the stone door shook.

A thin line of golden light appeared around it.

Vaidehi stepped forward.

"Mother?"

The voice came again.

"Vaidehi..."

She placed her hand against the stone.

"Open it."

Devadatta immediately moved toward her.

"No."

Vaidehi turned.

"You cannot keep me away from my mother."

Devadatta looked at Tez.

"Your Seal."

Tez understood.

The Guardian Seal had begun glowing.

Vaidehi removed her pendant.

Together, they approached the door.

Devadatta tried to stop them.

"Wait."

Tez looked at him.

"You told me to become strong."

"Now let me make my own choice."

Devadatta stopped.

Tez placed the Seal into the stone.

Vaidehi placed the pendant beside it.

The door opened.

Slowly.

The chamber beyond was filled with golden light.

And there...

standing beside an ancient lamp...

was a woman.

Her hair had turned partly grey.

Her face was thinner than the portrait Vaidehi carried.

But her eyes were unmistakable.

Vaidehi whispered,

"Mother."

Maitreyi smiled.

"My child."

Vaidehi ran to her.

They embraced.

For a few moments, the ancient Sanctuary disappeared.

There was no Black Eclipse.

No Guardians.

No prophecy.

Only a mother holding her daughter.

Tez watched silently.

His eyes became wet.

Maitreyi looked over Vaidehi's shoulder.

Her eyes met Tez's.

She smiled.

"And you must be Tez."

Tez nodded.

"You knew me?"

"I knew you before you knew yourself."

The Mother Who Waited

They moved into the inner chamber.

Maitreyi sat beside Vaidehi.

Her daughter could not stop touching her hands, as if afraid she might disappear.

"You waited here all these years?"

Maitreyi smiled sadly.

"Not all the time."

"Then where?"

"Inside the Sanctuary."

She looked toward the walls.

"The deeper chambers do not follow the same rules as the outside world."

Tez frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"Time behaves differently here."

Arivaan looked surprised.

"That secret was lost."

Maitreyi nodded.

"That is why the First Sanctuary was built."

She looked at Devadatta.

"We discovered it together."

Tez looked at his father.

"You and her?"

Devadatta nodded.

"Yes."

Maitreyi continued.

"We came here after Suryanagari."

"We believed the Black Eclipse would follow."

"They did."

"But they could not cross the final barrier."

"Why?"

"Because the barrier recognizes the bloodlines."

She looked at Tez and Vaidehi.

"Only both together can pass."

The Heart of the Sanctuary

Maitreyi led them farther inside.

At the end of the chamber was a circular room.

Its walls were covered with thousands of tiny inscriptions.

At the center stood a large stone vessel.

Inside it was something that looked like a glowing crystal.

It pulsed gently.

Like a heartbeat.

Tez stared.

"The Heart."

Maitreyi nodded.

"The Heart of the Sanctuary."

The Guardian Seal responded immediately.

Light flowed from it toward the crystal.

Vaidehi's pendant also began glowing.

The crystal became brighter.

Tez felt warmth spreading through his body.

Then he heard something.

A whisper.

Not from the room.

From inside his own mind.

Remember.

Tez stepped backward.

"What was that?"

Devadatta looked alarmed.

"You heard it?"

Tez nodded.

"What?"

"The Heart."

Maitreyi closed her eyes.

"Then it has accepted you."

The Memory

The chamber suddenly filled with light.

Tez saw images.

Not with his eyes.

With his mind.

He saw ancient India.

Great rivers flowing through fertile plains.

Villages filled with activity.

Craftsmen working with metal.

Scholars studying stars.

Children learning beneath trees.

He saw temples.

Libraries.

Healing centers.

Great cities.

Then war came.

Kingdoms fought.

Knowledge was stolen.

People suffered.

The Guardians tried to protect the teachings.

Then Tez saw seven families.

His family.

Vaidehi's family.

And five others.

They stood before the Heart.

One of them spoke:

"One day, when darkness rises again, the two bloodlines will return."

Another said:

"The child of the first blood will open the way."

A third said:

"But the child must choose."

The vision changed.

Tez saw himself.

Older.

Standing before the Heart.

On one side stood the Guardians.

On the other stood the Black Eclipse.

Both demanded his loyalty.

Then the vision ended.

Tez fell to his knees.

Vaidehi rushed toward him.

"Tez!"

"I'm fine."

But he was not.

He had seen his future.

Or perhaps only one possibility.

Maitreyi's Warning

Maitreyi looked at him seriously.

"The Heart does not show the future."

"Then what did I see?"

"Possibilities."

"Possible futures."

"Created by choices."

Tez looked at Devadatta.

"So I can choose."

"Yes."

"What if I choose wrong?"

Maitreyi answered softly.

"Then others will pay the price."

The words stayed with him.

The Black Eclipse Arrives

Suddenly, a horn sounded outside.

Once.

Twice.

Then many times.

Bhaskar rushed into the chamber.

"They're here."

Devadatta stood.

"How many?"

"Too many."

Arivaan drew his weapon.

"The Black Eclipse."

Maitreyi looked toward the entrance.

"They found us."

Tez looked at the Heart.

"We cannot let them take it."

Devadatta nodded.

"No."

A loud explosion shook the Sanctuary.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

The outer doors began to crack.

Rudran smiled.

"They have arrived."

Tez turned toward him.

"You knew."

Rudran's smile disappeared.

"I suspected."

Another explosion.

The walls trembled.

Vaidehi stood beside Tez.

"We stay together."

Tez nodded.

"Together."

Father and Son

Devadatta came toward Tez.

For the first time since their reunion, there was no distance between them.

He placed a hand on Tez's shoulder.

"I am sorry."

Tez looked at him.

"For everything?"

"For everything."

Tez took a breath.

"I don't know if I can forgive you yet."

Devadatta nodded.

"You don't have to."

"But..."

Tez looked toward the approaching enemies.

"I don't want to lose you again."

Devadatta's eyes filled with tears.

"You won't."

Tez gave a faint smile.

"Then stay beside me."

Devadatta nodded.

"I will."

For the first time since Suryanagari burned, father and son stood together.

Not as Guardian and heir.

Not as teacher and student.

But simply as father and son.

The Final Attack

The great doors shattered.

Black Eclipse warriors rushed into the Sanctuary.

Bhaskar stepped forward.

Aditi and Keshav joined him.

Arivaan raised his weapon.

Vaidehi stood beside Tez.

Devadatta took his place on Tez's other side.

For a moment, Tez looked at them all.

His family had once been destroyed.

But now he had found another kind of family.

People who had chosen to stand with him.

The battle began.

Steel struck stone.

Flames filled the corridors.

The Black Eclipse pushed forward.

But Tez did not retreat.

The Guardian Seal burned brightly in his hand.

He raised it.

The seven ancient pillars outside responded.

A wave of light moved through the Sanctuary.

Every warrior stopped.

The Heart pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Then a deep voice filled the entire mountain.

"The Guardian has chosen."

Everyone froze.

Tez looked around.

"Who said that?"

The Heart answered.

"Not yet."

The light suddenly vanished.

The Black Eclipse commander smiled.

"Then the choice remains."

He raised his weapon.

"Take the boy."

The warriors charged.

The Voice Behind the Door

Tez and Vaidehi stood back-to-back.

Devadatta fought beside them.

Maitreyi watched from the inner chamber.

The Heart continued to glow.

Then Tez heard the voice again.

Not the Heart.

Not his father.

Not Maitreyi.

A familiar voice.

A voice from his childhood.

A voice he had not heard since the night Suryanagari burned.

He turned toward a sealed stone door at the far end of the chamber.

Someone was standing behind it.

A shadow appeared beneath the gap.

Then came a whisper.

"Tez..."

He froze.

Vaidehi looked at him.

"What is it?"

Tez stared at the door.

"I know that voice."

The shadow moved closer.

"You thought I died that night."

Tez's heart stopped.

The voice came again.

"But I survived."

The ancient door began to open.

Slowly.

The person behind it stepped forward.

Tez's face went pale.

It was someone from Suryanagari.

Someone whose death he had witnessed.

Someone he had mourned.

Someone he had never expected to see again.

And the stranger smiled.

"You came back for me."

The Heart of the Sanctuary suddenly blazed with light.

The entire mountain shook.

And somewhere far beyond the western ridge, the Black Eclipse sounded a great horn.

The war for the Sanctuary had begun.
