Chapter 55 - The Seven Sleeping Doors - The City Inside the Mountain

The great stone door closed behind them.

THOOM.

The sound travelled through the mountain like thunder.

Tez stood completely still.

For a few moments, nobody spoke.

They were surrounded by darkness.

There was no path visible ahead.

No torch.

No lamp.

No moonlight.

Only silence.

Then a tiny golden light appeared in front of Tez.

It floated in the air.

Another appeared beside it.

Then another.

Within moments, hundreds of small golden lights filled the darkness.

They were not flames.

They were tiny glowing stones fixed into the walls.

One by one, they awakened.

The mountain around them slowly became visible.

Tez looked up.

His mouth opened slightly.

He had never seen anything like it.

The entire city was inside the mountain.

Huge stone buildings rose from the ground.

Bridges crossed deep underground valleys.

Waterfalls came down from the ceiling and disappeared into clear pools.

Trees grew beneath the earth, their leaves shining with a faint golden light.

Stone roads stretched between ancient houses.

At the far end stood a massive palace carved directly into the mountain wall.

Girivana was not dead.

It was sleeping.

And they had just awakened it.

Vaidehi whispered,

"How is this possible?"

Maitreyi looked around in wonder.

"The ancient Guardians knew how to use the mountain itself."

"They built chambers inside it."

"They brought water from underground rivers."

"They created gardens beneath the earth."

Aarav stared at the enormous buildings.

"How old is this place?"

Maitreyi answered quietly,

"Older than most kingdoms we know."

Tez looked at the city.

"Then why did nobody find it?"

"Because it was meant to remain hidden."

Devadatta added,

"And because those who built it knew how to make the mountain hide its secrets."

Tez touched the wall.

The stone was cold.

But beneath his fingers, he felt a faint vibration.

Almost like a heartbeat.

The City That Was Waiting

They moved carefully along the ancient road.

Their footsteps echoed between the buildings.

There were no people.

Yet there were signs that someone had once lived there.

Clay pots sat outside houses.

Old wooden doors remained half-open.

Stone benches stood beneath trees.

A child's carved toy lay near a dry fountain.

Tez picked it up.

It was shaped like a small horse.

He turned it over.

A symbol was carved underneath.

The mountain.

Tez placed it back.

"This city feels like Suryanagari."

Vaidehi looked at him.

"Because people lived here."

"No."

Tez looked at the empty streets.

"Because it feels as if they left only yesterday."

Nobody answered.

The silence became heavier.

They continued.

Then something moved.

A stone statue near the road turned its head.

Tez immediately reached for his weapon.

"Did you see that?"

Aarav nodded.

"Yes."

Another statue moved.

Then another.

Stone cracked.

Dust fell from their bodies.

The statues stepped down from their platforms.

They were warriors.

Each carried a stone weapon.

Devadatta raised his sword.

"Stay together."

The statues surrounded them.

Tez prepared himself.

Then the first statue spoke.

Its voice was deep and ancient.

"Bearer of the Broken Cycle."

Tez froze.

The statue lowered its weapon.

The others did the same.

Vaidehi looked at Tez.

"What does that mean?"

Tez shook his head.

"I don't know."

The statue continued.

"You have returned."

Tez stared.

"Returned?"

The statue did not answer.

Instead, the golden lights above them became brighter.

A path opened through the centre of the city.

The statues stepped aside.

Tez understood.

They were being invited.

Not attacked.

The Hall of the Mountain Guardians

The path led them toward the enormous palace.

Its entrance was carved in the shape of a mountain peak.

Seven pillars stood on either side.

Each pillar carried a different symbol.

Tez recognized them.

The same seven symbols from the Guardian Seal.

Inside was a huge hall.

Ancient paintings covered the walls.

They showed the history of the Guardians.

The discovery of the Heart.

The creation of Anantapura.

The birth of the seven cities.

The division of knowledge.

And finally—

the betrayal.

Tez stopped before one painting.

It showed a young Aryan standing beside another young Guardian.

Vardhan.

They were smiling.

They looked like brothers.

Tez touched the painting.

"They were happy once."

Vaidehi stood beside him.

"Perhaps everyone begins with good intentions."

Tez looked at her.

"And then?"

"Sometimes fear changes them."

Tez remembered what Aryan had said.

Fear of losing. Fear of death. Fear of weakness.

He looked at Vardhan's face.

For the first time, he wondered whether Vardhan had once been a good man.

That thought did not excuse what he had done.

But it made his story more painful.

The Guardian Who Remained

A sound came from the end of the hall.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Everyone turned.

An old man appeared from the darkness.

He wore simple white robes.

His hair was long and silver.

He carried a wooden staff.

But his eyes were sharp.

Very sharp.

He looked at Tez.

Then at Vaidehi.

Then at Devadatta.

Finally, he looked toward the broken Memory Stone in Maitreyi's hand.

"You should not have brought that here."

Maitreyi stepped forward.

"Why?"

The old man pointed at the stone.

"Because it remembers things that should remain forgotten."

Tez asked,

"Who are you?"

The man looked at him.

"I am the last Keeper of Girivana."

Tez frowned.

"Last?"

"Everyone else is gone."

"How did you survive?"

The old man smiled.

"I did not survive."

Tez stared at him.

"Then what are you?"

The man touched his chest.

"A promise."

Silence filled the hall.

Tez remembered Aryan.

Another guardian who was no longer truly alive.

Another person preserved by ancient knowledge.

The old man looked at Tez.

"You carry his face."

"Aryan?"

The man nodded.

"But you are not him."

"No."

"Good."

"Why?"

"Because the world does not need another Aryan."

Tez looked confused.

"What does it need?"

The old man answered:

"Someone who can correct his mistakes."

The Memory Stone

The old Keeper walked toward Maitreyi.

"Give it to me."

Maitreyi hesitated.

Tez nodded.

She handed him the broken stone.

The old man held it between both hands.

The stone began glowing.

Images appeared in the air.

A young woman.

Tez recognized her immediately.

His mother.

She was walking through Girivana.

She was younger than Tez remembered.

Beside her was another woman.

Vaidehi stepped forward.

"That woman..."

The old Keeper looked at her.

"Your mother."

Vaidehi's face became pale.

She stared at the image.

Her mother was standing beside Tez's mother.

They were talking.

The sound was faint.

But one sentence became clear.

"The child must never know."

Vaidehi looked at Tez.

"Why were our mothers together?"

Tez had no answer.

The vision continued.

Tez's mother held something in her hand.

A small Guardian Seal.

The same kind Tez now carried.

She handed it to the other woman.

Vaidehi gasped.

"That's my mother."

The vision ended.

The stone went dark.

Vaidehi looked at Tez.

"My mother knew your mother."

"Yes."

"About the Guardians."

"Yes."

"About you."

Tez nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Vaidehi's eyes filled with tears.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

The old Keeper looked at her.

"Because she was afraid."

"Of what?"

"Of what would happen if the Black Eclipse discovered the truth."

Vaidehi looked at Tez.

"What truth?"

The Keeper did not answer.

Instead, he looked at Devadatta.

"You know."

Everyone turned toward him.

Tez's face changed.

"You knew?"

Devadatta lowered his eyes.

"Not everything."

"You knew enough."

Devadatta remained silent.

Tez stepped toward him.

"You knew my mother had been here."

"Yes."

"You knew Vaidehi's mother."

"Yes."

"You knew about the Seal."

"Yes."

Tez's voice became filled with anger.

"How much more have you hidden from me?"

Devadatta looked at him.

"I was trying to protect you."

Tez laughed bitterly.

"Everyone says that."

His voice broke.

"But every secret has cost me something."

Devadatta's eyes became wet.

"I know."

The Burden of the Past

Tez walked away.

He entered a smaller chamber beside the main hall.

There was a stone window overlooking the underground city.

Golden trees moved gently in the wind.

Water flowed through channels below.

It was beautiful.

But Tez could not enjoy it.

His whole life seemed to be built on secrets.

His father had hidden his identity.

His mother had hidden the truth.

The Guardians had hidden the Heart.

And now Vaidehi's family was part of it too.

How many more secrets were there?

Vaidehi entered the chamber.

She stood beside him.

"You are angry."

"Yes."

"At me?"

"No."

"At my mother?"

Tez looked at her.

"No."

"Then at whom?"

Tez looked through the window.

"I don't know."

Vaidehi stood quietly.

After a moment, she said,

"You are allowed to be angry."

Tez looked at her.

"But don't let their secrets become your prison."

He remained silent.

She continued.

"We cannot change what our parents did."

"No."

"But we can decide what we do with the truth."

Tez looked at her.

"How do you always know what to say?"

Vaidehi smiled.

"I don't."

"Sometimes I just speak."

Tez smiled.

For a moment, the pain became lighter.

Their eyes met.

There was something between them now.

Something stronger than friendship.

Neither spoke about it.

But both felt it.

The Memory Chamber

The old Keeper called them back.

"There is something you must see."

They followed him through a narrow passage.

At the end was a circular chamber.

In the centre stood a large stone covered with ancient writing.

"The Memory Stone you found was only a fragment."

Maitreyi looked surprised.

"Then what is this?"

"The original."

Everyone stared.

Tez stepped forward.

The stone began glowing.

Images appeared.

His mother.

His father.

Vaidehi's mother.

Devadatta.

And a fifth person.

A man wearing the robes of the Black Eclipse.

Tez stared.

"Who is he?"

The image became clearer.

The man's face appeared.

Tez knew him.

His heart stopped.

He had seen that face before.

In Suryanagari.

The night of the attack.

The man had been standing near the burning houses.

Tez whispered,

"He's one of them."

The Keeper nodded.

"But he was not always."

The image changed.

The same man stood beside Tez's mother.

They were speaking.

Tez moved closer.

Then he heard the words.

"When the time comes, the child must be taken to Girivana."

Tez's heart began pounding.

"Why?"

The memory continued.

His mother answered:

"Because he is the key."

The vision disappeared.

Tez stepped back.

"The key to what?"

Nobody answered.

Then a voice came from behind them.

"To me."

Everyone turned.

Vardhan stood at the entrance.

Vardhan Returns

His black robes were torn.

Blood covered one side of his face.

But he was smiling.

Tez immediately reached for his weapon.

"You."

Vardhan stepped into the chamber.

"I knew you would come here."

Devadatta raised his sword.

Vardhan looked at him.

"You still protect him."

Devadatta answered,

"Until my last breath."

Vardhan smiled.

"Then perhaps your last breath will come sooner than expected."

Tez stepped forward.

"What did my mother mean when she called me the key?"

Vardhan's smile disappeared.

"You really don't know."

"Tell me."

"You will discover it soon enough."

"Tell me!"

Vardhan looked at the ancient stone.

"Every city will reveal a piece of your past."

"Every door will bring you closer to the truth."

"And when you reach the seventh..."

He paused.

"You will finally understand why your life was never ordinary."

Tez raised his weapon.

"I won't let you reach the seventh."

Vardhan smiled.

"I don't need to."

"Why?"

"Because you will open it for me."

The chamber shook.

The old Keeper looked frightened.

"Leave."

Vardhan laughed.

"You still believe you can command me?"

"No."

The Keeper looked at Tez.

"I am telling him."

The golden lights throughout Girivana suddenly turned red.

A deep alarm echoed through the city.

GONG.

Then another.

GONG.

Maitreyi looked toward the ceiling.

"The city is under attack."

Vardhan turned.

His soldiers appeared in the distant streets.

The Black Eclipse had entered Girivana.

Tez looked at Vaidehi.

She nodded.

They stood together.

Vardhan walked backward toward the exit.

"Go ahead."

"Fight."

"Search."

"Learn."

"I will not stop you."

Tez stared at him.

"Why?"

Vardhan smiled.

"Because the truth is the most dangerous weapon."

Then he disappeared into the darkness.

The Choice of the Mountain

The old Keeper hurried toward Tez.

"There is no time."

"What do we do?"

"Find the Memory Stone."

"We have it."

"No."

He pointed toward the heart of the city.

"The real one."

"Why?"

"Because the Black Eclipse will destroy Girivana to get it."

Tez looked toward the ancient city.

Outside, fighting had begun.

The sound of weapons echoed through the mountain.

Vaidehi stood beside him.

"What does the stone contain?"

The Keeper looked at Tez.

"Your missing memories."

Tez froze.

"My memories?"

"Yes."

"All of them?"

"Not all."

"Only the ones someone took from you."

Tez felt his heart race.

His childhood.

His mother.

His father.

The night of Suryanagari.

The mysterious Guardian Seal.

Perhaps all the answers were waiting inside that stone.

The Keeper handed him a small key made of black stone.

"Go."

"Where?"

"Below the city."

"Find the Memory Chamber."

"And when you reach it?"

The old man looked into Tez's eyes.

"Do not be afraid of what you remember."

Tez closed his hand around the key.

"I won't."

But deep inside, he knew he was lying.

Because sometimes the truth was more frightening than any enemy.

The Mountain Begins to Fall

The entire city shook.

A crack opened across the main road.

One of the ancient towers collapsed.

Vaidehi grabbed Tez's arm.

"We have to move."

They ran.

Devadatta led the group toward the underground passage.

Behind them, the ancient Guardians fought the Black Eclipse.

Golden light clashed with black fire.

Girivana was waking.

And now it was fighting for its life.

Tez looked back one last time.

At the top of the mountain palace, the symbol of the Mountain Guardian began glowing.

Then the symbol on Tez's Guardian Seal changed.

The mountain symbol faded.

A new symbol appeared.

A river.

Tez stopped.

Vaidehi looked at it.

"The second door."

Tez nodded.

"Yes."

The first door had opened.

But the cost had been greater than they expected.

They had discovered that their mothers were connected.

That Devadatta had hidden more than Tez knew.

That Vardhan knew something about Tez's first life.

And most importantly—

Tez's memories had been deliberately taken from him.

The truth was no longer waiting somewhere in the distant past.

It was coming toward him.

The Last Memory

As they reached the exit tunnel, Tez felt something inside his pocket.

He stopped.

He pulled out the broken piece of the Memory Stone.

It was glowing.

An image appeared on its surface.

His mother.

She was standing alone.

Older than in the previous vision.

Tears were running down her face.

She looked directly toward Tez.

Her lips moved.

This time, he could hear her.

Barely.

But clearly.

"Tez... if you are seeing this, then Vaidehi is with you."

Tez froze.

Vaidehi stared at the stone.

The image continued.

His mother's voice trembled.

"Trust her."

Then the image disappeared.

Vaidehi looked at Tez.

"She knew."

Tez could not speak.

The stone became dark.

They ran again.

Behind them, Girivana shook.

Ahead of them, the mountain passage opened toward the eastern forest.

And somewhere far beyond that forest, the second hidden city waited.

But Tez carried one new question in his heart.

Why had his mother known that Vaidehi would be beside him?

And why had she trusted Vaidehi's family with the Guardian Seal?

The answers were still hidden.

But now Tez knew one thing.

His story had begun long before the night Suryanagari burned.

Perhaps even before he was born.

And somewhere in that forgotten past was the truth about who he really was.
