Chapter 1 - "The Gorie Book 1: Rise of the Messiah"

Prologue : THE Dark Covenant (1692)

"Archbishop, I beg of you," Father Sabastian's voice trembled, "do not proceed with this ritual. It's an abomination, a madness that defies the natural order. We were not meant to create such horrors."

Archbishop De Donatis halted, turned to face Father Sabastian, and spoke in a measured tone, "Father Sabastian, remember your place. All will be revealed in due time. Fear not, for history will erase our involvement. Come."

As Archbishop De Donatis turned to continue walking, the front doors of the Church of Salem creaked open, revealing the night's darkness. The Archbishop's bodyguards stood at attention, their faces illuminated only by the faint moonlight.

At the bottom of the porch stairs, twelve priests stood in silence, their eyes fixed on Archbishop De Donatis.

Archbishop De Donatis, lifted the chalice filled with blood in his right hand and declared, "Tonight , we gather for the Great Sacrifice ,a ritual that will unlock the Secret's of the Divine. Which one of you, my brothers, will step forward and drink the blood from King Solomon's Chalice ,sealing your fate and ours?"

Present Day

Chapter 1 "Urban Legend"

As the morning sun cast a warm glow over their suburban home, athletic-built Jacob Griffin loaded the last of the camping gear into their RV, while his wife Jenny, a slender woman with long, curly brown hair and a warm smile, ushered their excited brood into the car.

Inside the vehicle, chaos reigned. Carmen, their tiny ball of energy at 10 years old, chattered nonstop with her siblings, her bright blue eyes sparkling with anticipation.

Catherine,15 and entering the tumultuous teen years, rolled her eyes good-naturedly at Carmen's antics, her long, dark hair tied back in a ponytail.

Jeremiah, 12 and still full of preteen curiosity, listened intently to Carmen's stories, his messy brown hair sticking out in every direction.

Toby the soon to be 18 year old heartthrob of the family, strode towards the RV with confident swagger. His chiselled features and strong jawline framed piercing emerald green eyes that seemed to sparkle with mischief. His short, dark hair was perfectly messy, and his athletic build, filled out his faded black t-shirt and worn jeans effortlessly.

Toby's playful roar sent his siblings screaming with delight, and Jacob chuckled, shaking his head, as he closed the RV's storage compartment with a loud thud.

"Alright everyone, last check," Jacob announced, "Food, check. Camping gear, check. Sanity… questionable," he said with a laugh.

Jenny smiled warmly at her husband, "Sanity will be restored with a weekend in nature, I promise."

Toby poked his head out of the RV window, "Mom, dad, can we hit the road already please?"

As the RV drove away from their home, the family's laughter and chatter filled the vehicle.

"This afternoon, we'll arrive at Lake Tehillah," Jacob announced, his voice cheerful.

But Toby's mind wandered to the strange dreams plaguing him lately, visions of, ancient rituals beneath moonlit skies, and a chilling voice declaring, "The time of awakening nears…"

Suddenly, his mother's hand touched his arm, "Toby, hey, space cadet, Catherine's asking about music."

Toby shook off the eerie feeling and forced a smile, "Yeah, play Catherine's playlist, her music's less painful than Jeremiah's singing."

The family laughed, oblivious to the shiver running down Toby's spine.

The landscape shifted from suburbs to dense woods, casting long, ominous shadows across the road.

Hours later, a faded sign creaked in the gentle breeze, "Welcome to Raven's Peak – 15 miles to Lake Tehillah."

Later, the RV came to a stop outside the Lake Tehillah General Store. The Griffins excitedly exited the RV and walked up the 6 steps to the store entrance. The bell above the door jingled as Jacob walked into the Store, followed by his wife Jenny and their children.

The store's rustic charm enveloped them. Fishing gear, hunting gear, camping supplies, and local snacks lined the shelves.

Behind the counter stood the lake's legendary mountain man, his bushy beard and warm smile welcoming customers.

Jacob approached the counter, while his hands reached for a few of his favourite snacks, "Hello there. My name is Jacob and this is my family. My wife, Jenny," He gestured to her lovingly, "and our kids. Carmen, Toby, Jeremiah and Catherine."

The man behind the counter smiled warmly, Introducing himself in a deep, friendly voice, "Hello Jacob, I'm Sam . Nice to meet you all . Welcome to the Lake Tehilla General Store. Your one stop shop for all your camping needs and local advice."

Jacob smiled warmly, shaking Sam's hand firmly, "Hi Sam, thanks for the warm welcome! We just wanted to spend some quality time together before Toby here turns 18 and becomes too cool for us!"

Toby rolled his eyes good-naturedly, laughing along with his siblings.

Jacob continued, "We've rented the Waterfall Campsite, I hope it's a good camping spot."

Sam nodded, "It's my favourite spot, very scenic, peaceful…"

As they chatted, Sam helped Jacob pick out steaks and veggies for their weekend dinner.

Just as they were finishing up, Jacob turned to Sam and asked, "Say, we're having a BBQ at our campsite tonight. Would you like to join us? We'd love some local insight into these woods."

Sam's face lit up with a warm smile, "I'd be honoured. What time should I swing by?"

Jacob replied, "How about seven?"

Sam nodded, "Perfect, I'll bring some fresh trout to grill alongside your steaks."

As the Griffins exited the general store, they were met by the owner and manager of the Lake Tehilla campsite.

A huge man with a rugged face, that was flushed red from either excitement or alcohol, he extended his hand, to Jacob, "You folk's must be the Griffins, everyone else is booked in already. My name is Jerry McNamara we spoke on the phone."

Jacob shaking Jerry's hand said, "Yes, I remember, please call me Jacob, we have all our supplies, so we ready to be shown to our campsite if that's ok with you."

Jerry grinned widely, "The Waterfall Campsite's just a half a mile or so down this road. I'll hop in my truck and lead the way. Please keep an eye out for wildlife."

Jacob nodded, returning to the RV, "Alright everyone, let's roll. Jerry's leading us to the campsite!"

The kids cheered, excitedly buckling up.

Jenny smiled at Jacob, "Beautiful scenery already. This trip is exactly what we needed."

Jacob agreed, pulling out of the parking spot, following Jerry's truck down a winding road surrounded by lush green forests and sparkling streams. After a while, Jerry's truck turned left, into a secluded campsite.

Jacob parked the RV, watching as Jerry stepped out of his truck.

Jerry then walked over to the Griffin's, "Welcome to the Waterfall Campsite, your home for the weekend. Campsite rules are very simple folk's,

1. Keep fires contained in the pit.

2. Dispose of trash in the bear-proof cans.

3. Respect wildlife . Don't feed or approach any of them.

4. Quiet hours start at 10 PM.

If you folks need anything, just give me a holler at the entrance office, my number's on this campsite map."

He handed Jacob a detailed map of the area, pointing out hiking trails and emergency services.

With that, Jacob thanked Jerry and Jerry nodded kindly and before departing he said, "You folk's enjoy your stay now."

Leaving the Griffins to settle in and enjoy nature, with the kids already excitedly planning.

Toby, restless with adolescent energy, asked his father, "Dad, can I hit the mountain trail for a bit. I promise I'll be careful."

Jenny's expression turned cautious, "Toby, it's getting dark. Let's get dinner, and we can go over the trails tomorrow."

Jacob nodded in silent agreement, "Listen to your mom, son."

As night descended like a shroud over Lake Tehillah, the Griffins and Sam huddled around a crackling BBQ. The lake's water lapped gently against the shore, a soothing melody contradicted by the ominous forest shadows.

Toby mentioned his birthday wish, driving a ski boat and Jacob promised, "When we get back from our hike tomorrow, deal?"

Toby answered excitedly, "Thanks dad." But his gaze drifted towards the darkening woods.

As the night deepened around Lake Tehillah , the Griffin family's laughter and chatter wove a cosy spell around the campsite.

Toby's eyes were drawn irresistibly to the darkness beyond the fire's glow, he also wondered if anyone else could see what he was seeing. Shadows danced like sinister spirits among the trees. The wind whispered eerie melodies through the leaves and a faint, unsettling feeling crept over him, as if something or someone watched from just beyond the fires glow.

Sam's gravelly voice interrupted Toby's eerie reverie, "Be careful on them trails tomorrow, folks. There's always strange occurrences reported near the Western Ridge trail."

Jenny's head swivelled towards Sam, her expression concerned, "What kind of occurrences?"

Sam's gaze locked onto Jenny's, his eyes glinting with a hint of warning, "Things that'll make your skin crawl, ma'am."

Jacob's eyes narrowed slightly at Sam's ominous words, "What are you talking about Sam? Animal attacks or something?"

Sam's expression turned grave, his voice low and serious, "Worse than animals, Jacob. People have reported… visions, hearing whispers in their heads, and seeing shadows move of their own accord near the Western Ridge trail."

The campsite fell silent, only the crackling fire breaking the eerie stillness.

Toby felt icy fingers tracing down his spine as Sam's words echoed his own dark dreams.

Catherine spoke up, "Dad, maybe we should pick any other trail except the Western Ridge trail tomorrow?"

But Toby surprised everyone by saying, "Maybe, we should check out the Western Ridge trail. Just to see what's going on."

Jacob's eyes locked intensely onto Toby's, as if sensing something beneath his son's bold statement.

His gaze searched Toby's face, his expression a mix of surprise and concern, "Toby, what's going on with you? You're usually the cautious one."

Toby shrugged his shoulders, trying to appear nonchalant, but his heart raced with a thrill of eerie anticipation, "Just curious, Dad. Sam's story sounds like Urban Legend stuff."

Jenny leaned in, intuitively, "Toby, you've been having those nightmares again, haven't you?"

The campsite fell silent once more, with all eyes on Toby.

He nodded slowly, "Yeah."

Sam's eyes locked onto Toby's, his expression grim, "Someone stumbled out of those woods a few years ago, forever changed."

Sam's words hung in the air like a death sentence, casting a chill over the campsite.

Toby felt his heart racing wildly as he asked, "What happened to that person, Sam?"

Sam's voice was barely audible, as if fearing something might hear him, "He was a local teenager, named Elijah. He went into those woods alone and came back with, eyes that didn't seem his own. He was questioned by the authorities, But they didn't take it any further. I spoke to the Sheriff about Elijah, he told me, "That poor kid must've bumped his head something hard. All he spoke about didn't make one iota of sense to me.' Yep, that's what the Sherriff said, almost like he was trying to convince himself more than me."

Jacob looked at Sam and said, "Okay let's leave this conversation there for now. Besides, we having a early start in the morning."

Sam feeling a bit tired himself walked over, to Jacob and Jenny with a smile, that reflected his genuine appreciation, "Thanks for having me tonight, Jacob, Jenny, you have a lovely family. Goodnight everyone."

Jenny smiled back, "The pleasure was ours and thanks for the trout Sam!"

Toby, Catherine, Carmen, and Jeremiah all waved goodbye. Already looking half asleep.

Jacob shook Sam's hand firmly, "Sleep well, Sam. We'll talk more tomorrow."

Sam nodded, turned, and disappeared into the night.

Jacob turned to his family and said, "Mountain men always have tales to tell, come on let's get some sleep the trails await us in the morning and we can check out those urban legends for ourselves. Come on, let's hop to it."

The children and Jenny bid Jacob goodnight before retreating into the cosy RV, exhaustion evident in their slow footsteps, as they settled in for a well deserved rest. Jacob lingered behind, lost in thought for a moment, before snapping back into action . He gently doused the crackling campfire with a bucket of nearby water. The flames hissed softly before surrendering, leaving behind a trail of smoke and embers. With the fire out, Jacob turned towards the RV, Climbing aboard quietly most of his family sleeping already.

Toby's mind recoiled into darkness as he lay in the RV, haunted by recurring nightmares that had plagued him since his 17th birthday. Twisted visions of razor-sharp claws and glowing eyes.

A creature's menacing voice echoing in his mind, "You will not take your place on the High Council of the Druids."

He shuddered, dismissing the terror as mere anxiety.

Till morning dawned, casting a golden light across the RV's cosy interior.

Toby's eyes fluttered open to chaos, his family swarmed his bed, voices blending in joyful cacophony,

'HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOBY!'

He jolted upright, nearly tumbling off the narrow mattress.

Arms enveloped him, Dad's firm hug, mom's soft squeeze, little sister Carmen's squealing embrace, with Catherine and Jeremiah also hugging Toby and wishing him.

Toby laughed, still dazed, as he hugged each one back.

Jenny smiled, eyes sparkling, 'We'll celebrate properly tonight, sweetie, with cake and pizza's and most of your favourite snacks, after our hike today. Today belongs to adventure."

Still basking in birthday joy, the Griffin's set out on their hike, with only Catherine's backpack loaded and spirits were high, despite Sam's ominous warning as he stopped by on his way to open the general store, and before they left for the trails, "I'm telling you Jacob, don't take that trail. It's not safe, especially with…what I sense is around you."

His eyes locked intensely on Jacob, his gaze piercing Jacob's eyes like a warning sign.

But Jacob brushed off the warning with a confident smile, "Come on, Sam, not that again. If we decide to take the Western Ridge trail, I've got everything under control." Jacob patted Sam on his back, turned to his family and said, "Come on, guys, let's head for the trails."

They set out towards the trails. Spirits high with anticipation. Jacob led the way, with his wife Jenny beside him and their children fanned out behind.

Catherine's curious eyes scanned the terrain, while Toby's gaze drifted towards the trees' dark canopy and Jeremiah and Carmen chattered excitedly about the adventures awaiting them.

The Griffin family ventured deeper Into the woods, their laughter and chatter fading into the rustling of leaves.

All unaware, not far behind them, a tall figure emerged from the shadows. Its imposing presence was barely visible, through the dense foliage that cleverly concealed it. It's eyes fixed intently on the family ahead, the figure moved stealthily, tracking their every step with calculated precision, waiting patiently to see if they'd take the fateful Western Ridge trail.
