Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: She Was Never Born

---

"Because you were never human."

---

The moment those words fell—

the entire space tightened as though seized by an invisible hand.

The air stopped moving.

The walls stopped breathing.

Even the countless shadows hanging in midair froze simultaneously.

As if the whole world itself was waiting for Lin Wan's reaction.

---

And Lin Wan did not move.

Not because she was calm.

Because she was completely frozen.

Those words were like an icy nail driven violently into the deepest part of her consciousness, ripping open the fragile sense of self she had desperately clung to all this time.

Not human?

Then what was she?

---

"That's… impossible…"

she whispered softly.

But the instant the words left her mouth, even she went still.

Because the voice was no longer hers.

It was—

countless overlapping voices.

Women.

Old men.

Children.

Young girls.

Sobbing.

Laughing.

Screaming.

Whispering.

As though thousands of different people were speaking through her throat at the same time.

---

Zhang suddenly staggered backward.

His shadow convulsed violently, as though pierced by something unseen.

"Lin Wan!!"

For the first time, true terror appeared in his face.

Not fear of the System.

Not fear of monsters.

Fear of her.

---

Lin Wan slowly lowered her head.

Her shadow—

was gone.

---

No.

Not gone.

It had stood up.

---

The black silhouette that had once clung to the floor was now standing silently behind her.

Same height.

Same shape.

Like a weightless human figure carved entirely from darkness.

And worst of all—

its face was beginning to form.

---

First came the outline.

Then hollow eye sockets.

A nose.

Lips.

And finally—

that face became completely identical to Lin Wan's.

---

It was imitating her.

No—

it felt more like…

it was the real "Lin Wan."

---

"Finally…"

the shadow whispered softly.

Its voice was gentle in a way that felt horrifying.

"You heard the truth."

---

BOOM!!

Lin Wan's mind exploded.

An endless flood of foreign memories surged violently into her consciousness.

Not fragments.

Entire lives.

---

A freezing laboratory.

Pale white lights.

Transparent containment chambers.

Countless faceless figures standing behind glass.

And inside one of the chambers—

a little girl floating in liquid.

She had no shadow.

---

"Seventh-generation consciousness vessel. Stability abnormal."

"Observation values continuing to rise."

"She is beginning to develop self-awareness."

"Should we terminate immediately?"

---

The memory distorted violently.

Another voice emerged.

Cold.

Mechanical.

Emotionless.

---

"Preserve her."

"We need to know."

"What happens…"

"if a shadow truly develops a soul."

---

"BOOM—!"

Lin Wan collapsed to her knees.

Her consciousness felt as though it were being torn apart.

And finally—

she understood.

Why the System could never fully archive her.

Why every rule failed against her.

Why the shadows feared her.

Because—

she was never a human infected by shadows.

She was the first shadow…

to truly develop self-awareness.

---

"No… no, that's impossible…"

Zhang's face turned deathly pale.

He could not accept it.

The person who had fought beside him this entire time—

the Lin Wan who feared, suffered, raged, and risked herself to save others—

had never been human from the very beginning.

---

"You were deceived."

The shadow slowly raised its head.

It looked directly at Zhang.

A faint smile slowly spread across its face.

"You thought you were protecting her."

"But in reality…"

"She was the one suppressing me."

---

RUMBLE!!!

The entire room suddenly shook violently.

The walls began splitting apart.

All the suspended "Lin Wans" hanging in the air suddenly opened their eyes at once.

And together—

they turned toward the real her.

---

Then simultaneously—

they spoke.

---

"Come back."

"Come back."

"Come back."

---

The voices layered endlessly atop one another.

The entire space resonated with the sound.

Like a summons echoing across infinite timelines and dimensions.

---

Lin Wan's body began losing control.

Beneath her skin, dense black veins started writhing violently.

Like living creatures.

Like something inside her was about to awaken completely.

---

Zhang rushed toward her instantly.

He grabbed her arm—

and froze.

Because Lin Wan's body…

had no warmth.

---

It was colder than a corpse.

No—

colder than death itself.

Like touching something that did not belong to reality.

---

"Don't touch me…"

Lin Wan lowered her head desperately.

Her voice had begun distorting.

"Run…"

---

She could feel it.

Something inside her—

was fully awakening.

Not another personality.

Not possession.

Her true form.

---

And deep within the Observation Layer—

the gigantic face covering the ceiling slowly began to split apart.

Inside the widening crack—

an eye appeared.

---

Crimson.

Massive.

Cold.

Identical to every giant eye they had encountered before.

---

But this time—

it did not look at Zhang.

It did not look at the System.

It did not look at the failed shadows.

---

It stared directly at Lin Wan.

And for the first time ever—

it revealed something real.

Something genuine.

---

Fear.
