The sky began to shift from black to a dull charcoal, the faintest wash of grey bleeding along the horizon. Dawn never burst into the world anymore. It crept in quietly, like it wasn't sure it was welcome.
I stayed by the window until I was certain nothing had changed outside. The roamers from earlier had drifted farther down the street. No fresh movement. No distant engine. No signs of human presence.
When I turned, Kane was still asleep.
On his side. One arm tucked beneath his head, the other resting near his knife. His brow faintly creased like rest was something his body tolerated, not trusted.
He would be up soon.
He always woke just before full light. Predictable. Controlled.
I moved quietly.
Packed only what was mine. Half the water. Half the ammunition I could carry. Left the heavier tools. Left more food than I took. Checked the barricades twice, adjusting the cabinet carefully so it stayed secure after I slipped through.
I wasn't leaving him exposed.
