[The Imperial Capital Morning of the Festival]
The Cathedral of the Original Light was not built to be a fortress. It was built to be a surrender.
Once a year, during the holy Festival, every high ranking noble in the Kaelen Empire was required to travel to the Capital, strip off their armor, surrender their blades at the heavy iron gates, and walk into the inner sanctum completely defenseless. It was the ultimate, terrifying display of submission to the Creator.
Inside the royal dressing chambers of the Main Palace, seventeen year old Lyra stood before a massive gilded mirror. She was dressed in a breathtaking, flowing white maternity gown embroidered with silver thread. The stabilized mana inside her core gave her skin a warm, radiant flush.
I stood behind her, rigidly adjusting the high collar of my pristine white ceremonial uniform.
Despite the beautiful morning, my chaotic Three Aditya mana was crawling violently beneath my skin. An invisible, primal itch clawed at the back of my mind, demanding a weapon.
"You're tense," Lyra noted softly, watching my rigid reflection. She reached back, gently resting her warm hand against my cheek.
"I don't like this festival," I admitted, my crimson eyes narrowing. "I don't like walking into a room full of Southern and Northern vipers without my broadsword. I don't like leaving the Royal Guards outside. It feels like walking into a slaughterhouse."
Lyra turned around, offering a gentle, anchoring smile. "Zion, it is the Grand Cathedral. The holiest ground on the continent. No one would ever dare spill blood in the sanctuary. And besides..." She looked over my shoulder toward the open doorway. "We aren't exactly unprotected."
Leaning against the marble doorframe was Emperor Aldric.
He wore a majestic white and gold ceremonial cloak, though his towering, battle-scarred frame and glacial eyes made him look less like a devout pilgrim and more like an apocalyptic warlord suffocating inside a porcelain dollhouse.
"Your husband is simply paranoid, Lyra," Aldric said, his deep voice carrying a terrifying, absolute calm. "The ancient laws state we cannot bring steel into the sanctuary. But they cannot force me to leave my Darkness outside. Let the snakes scheme in the pews. If anyone so much as looks at you with ill intent, I will crush them into red mist before they can even blink."
I exhaled a heavy breath, my tense shoulders dropping a fraction of an inch. He's right, I told myself. With Father right beside us, even if the South tries something, it will be mass suicide.
We place so much faith in the sheer, overwhelming power of the monsters protecting us, completely forgetting that the most brilliant traps are not designed to overpower the dragon. They are designed to lock the dragon in a different room.
[The Grand Cathedral The Inner Sanctum]
The sheer, oppressive scale of the Cathedral was impossible to comprehend until you stood inside it. The vaulted ceilings stretched hundreds of feet into the air, crowned by a massive stained-glass dome depicting the Six Primordial Gods.
The inner sanctum was divided. The lower cavern was filled with polished wooden pews, currently packed shoulder to shoulder with the Empire's highest nobility.
At the very front, elevated by a steep flight of white marble stairs, was the Holy Altar, enclosed by four towering crystal pillars.
As the Royal Family entered, the entire congregation bowed their heads in absolute, terrified reverence for the Emperor. I kept Lyra close to my side, my eyes aggressively scanning the crowd. Sitting in the third row, dressed in immaculate white robes, were Duke Alistair Valerius, Duchess Beatrice, and Elena.
They didn't flinch. They didn't look away. Duke Alistair simply stared at the altar, a faint, rhythmic tap of his finger against his knee. They were too calm.
"Now," the High Priest announced, his magically amplified voice vibrating through the massive cavern. "We shall begin the Blessing of the New Generation. Will the expecting mothers please ascend to the Holy Altar?"
I gently squeezed Lyra's hand. "I'm right here in the front row."
Lyra smiled, letting go of my hand. She walked gracefully up the marble stairs alongside three other heavily veiled noblewomen, stepping past the crystal pillars and kneeling respectfully before the High Priest.
The ceremony began beautifully. The choir sang a haunting, celestial hymn. The stained glass cast vibrant, bleeding colors across Lyra's silver hair.
Then, the ground violently ruptured.
BOOM!
A massive, concussive explosion shattered the peace of the outer plaza, rattling the colossal stained-glass dome above us. Shouts of panic and the unmistakable, sharp ring of clashing steel erupted directly outside the heavy cathedral doors.
"What is that?!" a noble screamed. "We are under attack!"
Emperor Aldric's eyes narrowed into freezing, absolute slits. He stepped into the aisle, his pitch-black aura instantly violently flaring to life, dropping the temperature in the room to sub-zero. "Imperial Knights!" Aldric roared, his sovereign pressure pinning the panicked nobles to their pews. "Secure the perimeter! Do not let the violence breach the holy doors!"
I took a sprint toward the stairs to grab Lyra, my red mana igniting into a roaring inferno. "Lyra! Come down!"
But before my boot could touch the first marble step, the jaws of the trap snapped shut.
The High Priest, standing inches from Lyra, suddenly reached into his robes and thrust a twisted, rotting black artifact high into the air.
"Activating the Aegis of the Origin!" the Priest screamed, his eyes rolling back as necrotic dark mana flooded his veins.
The four towering crystal pillars violently activated. But instead of the holy, protective golden light of the Church, a thick, impenetrable dome of dark, purple anti-magic energy violently slammed down over the entire altar.
It completely severed the altar from the congregation. Lyra was trapped inside. I was locked on the outside.
"LYRA!" I roared. I lunged up the stairs, throwing a catastrophic, Three-Aditya infused punch directly at the purple barrier.
CRACK!
My fist collided with the barrier with the force of a falling meteor. The massive shockwave blew the front row of pews into splinters. But the barrier didn't even scratch. The anti-magic dome violently repelled the kinetic energy, sending me skidding backward down the stairs. My knuckles were completely shattered, smoking and dripping dark blood onto the marble.
"It's a Leyline Isolation Ward!" Emperor Aldric snarled. He stepped up beside me, his hands radiating a terrifying, crushing gravitational darkness that began to eat the light in the room. "The corrupted priest hooked it directly into the Cathedral's ancient magical foundations! It is drawing power from the earth itself!"
Inside the transparent purple dome, Lyra stumbled backward, her hands instinctively wrapping around her stomach in pure, unadulterated terror.
The three other "pregnant noblewomen" who had ascended the stairs with her suddenly reached under their white ceremonial robes.
They weren't pregnant.
They drew curved, wicked daggers dripping with absolute, necrotic black venom. Elite Southern assassins.
Down in the pews, Duke Alistair Valerius stood up. A twisted, victorious laugh echoed over the screams of the panicked congregation.
"Three minutes, Emperor!" Duke Valerius mocked, his eyes wide with arrogant madness, spreading his arms. "Even you cannot break a Leyline Ward in under three minutes! And by the time you shatter that glass... your cursed bloodline ends on the altar!"
Inside the dome, the three assassins lunged.
"NO!" I screamed, my vocal cords physically tearing.
My chaotic red mana exploded into a blinding, hyper-compressed pillar of absolute destruction. I threw myself at the barrier, completely ignoring my shattered bones, raining devastating, bloody blows against the purple glass. CRASH! CRASH! CRASH!
The Cathedral shook. The floor cracked beneath my boots. My blood smeared across the glass, but the divine barrier held firm. I was inches away from her, forced to watch the assassins raise their poisoned blades.
Lyra backed up against the cold stone of the Holy Altar. She was completely defenseless. If she cast a spell, her core would permanently detonate. She had nowhere to run.
"Please..." Lyra whispered, hot tears spilling down her pale cheeks as the poisoned steel descended. "Please, someone save my babies..."
And then, the universe answered.
A microscopic, invisible speck of golden light the fragment of the Original God resting deep within Lyra's womb suddenly ignited.
The entire Cathedral went completely, impossibly silent. Time itself seemed to stop.
The violently vibrating purple barrier, my roaring red mana, and the screaming nobles were entirely erased by a single, resonant heartbeat that echoed from Lyra's stomach.
THUMP.
A blinding, celestial pillar of pure, unadulterated white light violently erupted from Lyra's core. It shot straight up, completely vaporizing the anti-magic dome, shattering the Cathedral's massive stained glass roof, and piercing directly into the heavens.
The three elite assassins were instantly blasted backward by the sheer, apocalyptic holy pressure. Their poisoned daggers dissolved into ash before their bodies even hit the ground.
Down in the pews, Emperor Aldric and I completely froze. Our dark and red manas were instantly, effortlessly extinguished by the overwhelming purity of the light.
Duke Valerius collapsed to his knees, his arrogant smile melting into absolute, primal horror as the holy pressure crushed him against the floor.
Lyra floated three feet in the air, enveloped in a swirling, localized galaxy of golden and white celestial energy. Her silver hair defied gravity, and her deep blue eyes glowed with a terrifying, ancient, divine authority that brought every single soul in the room to their knees in sheer, weeping submission.
The unborn twins hadn't just stabilized her core. They had unlocked the Divine Fragment.
The Sovereign of Restoration had awakened.
