Chapter 1 - Awakening

The first thing I noticed was the grass. Green. Fresh. Impossibly soft against my cheek.

That couldn't be right.

I pushed myself up, blinking against the sunlight that filtered through the trees above. My hands pressed into cool earth, and I could feel every blade of grass between my fingers. Real. Solid. *Alive.*

But I was dead. I remembered dying. The screech of tires, the impact, the darkness that swallowed everything. The pain that had been there one moment and gone the next. I'd been certain that was the end.

So why was I sitting in what looked like Central Park?

I glanced down at myself. My clothes were the same ones I'd been wearing that day—worn boots, faded jeans, a muscle shirt under my favorite black hoodie. No blood. No torn fabric. Not even a scratch. My hands trembled as I ran them over my arms, my chest, checking for injuries that should have been there.

Nothing.

"What the hell?" The words came out hoarse, but hearing my own voice made everything feel more real. Too real.

I stumbled to my feet, taking in my surroundings. Joggers passed by on a nearby path, completely ignoring me. A woman walked her dog. Kids played on a distant playground. Everything looked normal. Everything looked like a regular afternoon you'd expect to see in New York City.

Except I shouldn't be here. I shouldn't be anywhere.

Before I could process that thought further, the air in front of me shimmered. I jerked back, nearly tripping over my own feet, as a translucent blue screen materialized out of nowhere. It hung there, floating at eye level, displaying text that seemed to glow with its own internal light.

*GREETINGS, AMIR BEST. I AM THE DUNGEON GOD SYSTEM.*

I stared at the words, my brain struggling to catch up with what my eyes were seeing. A system? Like in those light novels I used to read? My heart pounded against my ribs as more text appeared.

*YOU HAVE BEEN SELECTED AS THE NEW DUNGEON GOD. OUR SOULS ARE NOW BONDED TILL THE END OF TIME.*

"Okay," I said slowly, my voice barely above a whisper. "I'm either dreaming, dead and this is some kind of weird afterlife, or I've completely lost my mind."

*YOU ARE NEITHER DREAMING NOR INSANE. YOU DID DIE ON EARTH, BUT YOU HAVE BEEN REINCARNATED FOR A GREATER PURPOSE.*

The screen pulsed, and more information flooded across its surface.

*YOUR TASK AS THE DUNGEON GOD IS TO CREATE VARIOUS DUNGEONS ACROSS MULTIPLE WORLDS. THESE DUNGEONS WILL HELP THE INHABITANTS GAIN AND TRAIN THEIR SKILLS, PROVIDING THEM WITH THE POWER TO BETTER PROTECT THEMSELVES. YOU MUST DO WHATEVER IS NECESSARY TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN, EVEN IF THE TRAINING RESULTS IN CASUALTIES. GROWTH OFTEN REQUIRES SACRIFICE.*

I read the words twice, then a third time. Dungeons. Multiple worlds. Training people even if some died in the process. It sounded insane. It sounded like every fantasy I'd ever dreamed about during those long, miserable nights in my old life.

*YOUR STARTER WORLD IS THE DC YOUNG JUSTICE UNIVERSE. THIS WILL BE THE ONLY WORLD YOU HAVE ACCESS TO UNTIL YOU PROVE YOURSELF READY. WHEN YOU ARE PREPARED TO BEGIN, SIMPLY SAY SO, AND I WILL TRANSPORT YOU TO YOUR DIVINE SPACE WHERE THE TUTORIAL ON CREATING YOUR FIRST DUNGEON WORLD WILL COMMENCE.*

I stood there for a moment, letting it all sink in. Dead. Reincarnated. Given godhood. The chance to create dungeons like some kind of video game developer, but real. The part about people potentially dying didn't even bother me—I'd seen enough of the world to know that sometimes harsh lessons were the only ones that stuck. Besides, if this was the DC universe, people faced death every day from supervillains and alien invasions anyway he had no doubt that there were plenty of people willing to risk their life for the power to protect themselves.

A laugh bubbled up in my chest, surprising me with its intensity. My old life had been a prison of monotony and disappointment. I'd spent years trapped in routines I hated, surrounded by people I couldn't trust, going through the motions of existence without really living. And now? Now I was being offered power. Purpose. A fresh start as a literal god.

Who in their right mind would refuse that?

"I'm ready," I said, my voice steady now. "Let's begin."

The world dissolved.

It wasn't like teleporting in movies or shows. There was no flash of light, no sensation of movement. One moment I was standing in Central Park, and the next I was somewhere completely different. The transition was so smooth it was almost disorienting.

I blinked, trying to adjust to my new surroundings. White. Everything was white. Not walls exactly—more like an infinite void of pure whiteness stretching in every direction. The ground beneath my feet was solid, but I couldn't see where it ended. There was no sky, no horizon, just endless pale emptiness.

"Where the hell am I? this can't be my divine space there's nothing here." I muttered.

The system screen appeared again, its blue glow somehow visible even against the overwhelming whiteness.

*HELLO AGAIN, GREAT DUNGEON GOD AMIR. YOUR FIRST TUTORIAL LESSON BEGINS NOW.*

I crossed my arms, waiting.

*YOU ARE PROBABLY WONDERING ABOUT THE VOID. THIS IS YOUR DIVINE SPACE. THE REASON IT IS EMPTY IS BECAUSE YOU HAVE NOT YET DECIDED WHAT YOU WANT IT TO LOOK LIKE. YOU SIMPLY NEED TO PICTURE IT IN YOUR MIND, AND IT WILL BECOME WHAT YOU WILL IT TO BE.*

My divine space. A place I could shape however I wanted. The possibilities were staggering. I could create anything—a modern penthouse, a futuristic command center, a fantasy castle. For several minutes, I considered different options, weighing the pros and cons of each.

Then it hit me. I'd always loved the aesthetic of Uruk from the Fate series. The massive walls, the grand temple architecture, the sense of ancient power and majesty. But I didn't need the full city, not yet. There was no one here to populate it. Just the essential structures would do for now—the walls and the main temple castle where I could work and plan.

I closed my eyes and focused, visualizing every detail. The towering walls of white stone, etched with intricate patterns. The massive temple that served as both palace and fortress, its columns reaching toward an artificial sky. The throne room at its heart, grand and imposing.

When I opened my eyes, everything had changed.

The void was gone. In its place stood exactly what I'd imagined—the walls of Uruk stretching into the distance, the temple rising before me in all its glory. I was standing in the throne room now, though I didn't remember moving. The floor was polished marble, reflecting the light that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. A massive throne sat on a raised platform, waiting.

I took a step forward, then froze. Something was different. I could feel it in the way I moved, in the weight of my limbs, in the power that seemed to hum just beneath my skin. I looked down at my hands.

They were bigger. Stronger. My entire body felt different—taller, more powerful. I caught sight of my reflection in the polished marble and nearly jumped. The face looking back at me was mine, but not. Same basic features, but refined. Perfected. I was now 6,5 instead of my former 5,11 my hair had turned white as snow, and my eyes glowed with an ethereal green light. And even though I couldn't see them I knew that tribal like tattoos traced patterns across my upper body, mind you they aren't visible through the golden armor that had somehow replaced my street clothes. But I just had a instinctive knowledge of my own body that I can't explain.

Also the armor looked exactly like the one Gilgamesh from Fate/stay night wears but it was resized to fit my bigger body.

"What the—"

*CONGRATULATIONS, AMIR, ON COMPLETING YOUR FIRST TUTORIAL TASK.*

The system screen appeared beside me, its text scrolling rapidly.

*NOW FOR TASK TWO. YOU MUST HAVE NOTICED SOMETHING WAS DIFFERENT, AND YOU WERE RIGHT. YOU ARE NOW IN YOUR TRUE FORM, YOUR GOD FORM. IN THIS STATE, YOU ARE TEN TIMES FASTER, STRONGER, AND SMARTER—BETTER IN EVERY WAY. HOWEVER, UNDERSTAND THAT YOU ARE STILL A BABY GOD. DO NOT GET COCKY. YOU HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO.*

I flexed my fingers, feeling the raw strength in them. Ten times better. The possibilities were intoxicating.

*BEFORE WE CONTINUE TO THE THIRD TASK, YOU MUST LEARN TO CONTROL YOUR NEW BODY AND PRACTICE SWITCHING BETWEEN YOUR GOD FORM AND YOUR HUMAN FORM. ONLY AFTER YOU HAVE MASTERED THIS WILL THE NEXT TUTORIAL TASK BE GIVEN.*

"How long do I have?" I asked.

*TIME IN YOUR DIVINE SPACE MOVES DIFFERENTLY THAN IN THE OUTSIDE WORLD. TAKE AS LONG AS YOU NEED.*

I grinned, feeling the weight of my new existence settling over me like a familiar cloak. A new life. New power. New purpose. Whatever came next, I was ready for it.

I spent the next several hours testing my limits. Running through the empty corridors of my temple faster than any normal human could move. Lifting stones that should have been impossible to budge. Learning the feel of my enhanced mind as it processed information at incredible speeds. Then came the tricky part—figuring out how to switch back to my human form.

It took concentration at first, focusing on the memory of who I'd been. My height decreased, the power ebbed to something more manageable, the armor faded back into my street clothes. Then I'd switch back, feeling the surge of divine energy rush through me again.

By the time I was comfortable with the transitions, exhaustion was starting to creep in. Even gods apparently needed rest.

"System," I called out, my voice echoing through the throne room. "I'm done for now. I'll tackle the third task tomorrow."

*UNDERSTOOD. REST WELL, DUNGEON GOD AMIR. YOUR REAL WORK BEGINS SOON.*

The screen faded, leaving me alone in my divine space. I made my way to what I'd designated as my personal quarters—a simple room for now, though I'd expand it later. As I lay down on the bed I'd willed into existence, I couldn't help but smile.

My old life was gone. This new one? This was going to be interesting.
