Chapter 23 - Don’t Make Me Choose Between You and Myself

The silence after his words didn't fade.

It stayed.

Heavy and close, like the air had thickened around every breath.

Shen Yichen was still near Lin Yue.

Too near for something that was supposed to be "normal."

But nothing about him felt normal anymore.

Lu Han's expression had gone colder.

"You're reaching a point where this stops being attachment and starts becoming collapse," he said.

Shen Yichen didn't look at him.

"I'm not collapsing," he replied.

A pause.

"I'm choosing what keeps me intact."

Lin Yue studied him quietly.

"And if that thing disappears?" she asked softly.

Shen Yichen answered immediately.

"Then I don't stay intact."

No hesitation.

No filtering.

Just truth spoken too plainly.

Silence.

Lin Yue's gaze tightened slightly.

"You're placing your entire stability on something outside yourself," she said.

Shen Yichen finally looked at her.

His eyes softened a fraction.

"It's not outside," he said quietly.

A pause.

"It's you."

That answer landed differently.

Not romantic.

Not poetic.

Direct dependence.

Lu Han stepped forward again.

"You're turning her into your emotional life-support system."

Shen Yichen finally turned toward him.

Slow.

Cold.

"I'm acknowledging reality," he said.

A pause.

"And reality is: I don't function without her near me."

Lin Yue exhaled slowly.

"That's not a foundation you can build a life on."

Shen Yichen didn't deny it.

"I know."

A beat.

"But I don't have another foundation."

Silence.

That was the core problem.

Not refusal.

Absence.

Lin Yue looked at him for a long moment.

"You're not even trying to rebuild yourself independently," she said softly.

Shen Yichen nodded once.

"I tried that version."

A pause.

"It was empty."

Lu Han's voice sharpened.

"Because your memories were gone."

Shen Yichen didn't react immediately.

Then quietly:

"Or because she wasn't there."

Silence dropped instantly.

That distinction changed everything again.

Because it wasn't just memory loss anymore.

It was belief that her absence equaled emptiness.

Lin Yue stepped slightly closer.

Not away.

Closer.

Shen Yichen noticed instantly.

His attention locked onto her immediately.

Lin Yue spoke softly.

"You're afraid of being alone with yourself."

Shen Yichen didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

Simple.

Honest.

Unprotected.

"And I don't want to be."

A pause.

"Not again."

Silence.

Lu Han exhaled sharply.

"This is dependency," he said again.

Shen Yichen finally looked at him fully.

"And what I had before?" he asked quietly.

A pause.

"Was that independence worth it?"

No one answered.

Because the version of him before—

had been erased precisely because it didn't protect what he now considered essential.

Shen Yichen turned back to Lin Yue.

Their space between them barely existed anymore.

His voice softened slightly.

"I don't need to be whole alone," he said quietly.

A pause.

"I just need to not lose you."

Lin Yue's expression softened slightly—but cautiously.

"You're asking me to be your stability."

Shen Yichen didn't deny it.

"Yes."

A beat.

"And I trust you more than I trust myself now."

Silence.

That was the final shift.

Not obsession.

Not love.

Trust transferred entirely outward.

Lin Yue looked at him carefully.

"If I move away," she said softly.

Shen Yichen answered immediately.

"I will follow."

No threat.

No anger.

Just certainty.

"And if you stay," he added quietly,

"I won't fall apart."

Silence settled again.

And for the first time—

it was clear.

He wasn't asking for affection.

He was asking for structure.

And she had become the only structure his mind still recognized as real.
