Chapter 45 - Don’t Ask Me to Stop Protecting You

The villa felt different again.

Not calmer.

Not more chaotic.

Just… rebalanced in a way Shen Yichen didn't fully understand yet.

He stood near Lin Yue as always.

But now, his attention didn't cling as tightly.

It moved.

It returned.

It observed.

Lu Han watched him carefully.

"You're adapting," he said quietly.

Shen Yichen didn't deny it.

"I'm changing," he corrected.

Lin Yue looked at him softly.

"And does that scare you?" she asked.

Shen Yichen paused.

"…Less than before," he said.

A pause.

"But still yes."

Silence.

That honesty had become more stable than his fear responses ever were.

Lu Han stepped forward slightly.

"You're no longer in constant threat anticipation mode," he said.

Shen Yichen nodded once.

"I noticed," he replied.

A pause.

"And I don't know what to replace it with yet."

Silence.

Lin Yue studied him carefully.

"You don't need to replace it with anything," she said gently.

Shen Yichen shook his head slightly.

"I think I do," he said quietly.

A pause.

"Otherwise I feel… unarmed."

Silence.

That word mattered.

Unarmed.

Not empty.

Not lost.

Vulnerable.

Lu Han exhaled slowly.

"You're associating fear with protection," he said.

Shen Yichen nodded.

"Yes."

Simple.

Honest.

Deeply rooted.

Lin Yue stepped slightly closer.

Shen Yichen noticed—but the reaction was no longer sharp.

It came after a pause.

He looked at her.

Then waited.

No immediate fear spike.

Just recognition.

Lin Yue spoke softly.

"You're still trying to protect me even when you're not afraid," she said.

Shen Yichen didn't deny it.

"Yes."

A pause.

"I don't know how to stop."

Silence.

That was the core remaining constant.

Not fear.

Not obsession.

But protective instinct that had outlived its original fuel.

Lu Han's voice softened.

"That's not something you need to stop," he said.

Shen Yichen looked at him.

"Then what is it?" he asked quietly.

Lu Han paused.

"Something you learn to balance," he said.

Silence.

Lin Yue tilted her head slightly.

"You don't have to treat every moment like something dangerous might happen," she said gently.

Shen Yichen looked at her for a long moment.

"…But I still want to make sure nothing happens to you," he said quietly.

A pause.

"That part hasn't changed."

Silence.

Lin Yue didn't respond immediately.

Then softly:

"Maybe it doesn't need to change."

Shen Yichen's gaze tightened slightly.

"That sounds like letting go," he said.

Lin Yue shook her head.

"No," she said.

A pause.

"It sounds like trusting me too."

Silence.

That word landed differently now.

Trust wasn't absence of fear anymore.

It was separate from it.

Lu Han stepped back slightly.

"You're reaching a new equilibrium," he said quietly.

Shen Yichen didn't respond immediately.

Then:

"I don't fully understand it yet."

Lin Yue stepped closer once more.

Shen Yichen noticed—but the reaction was slower now.

Gentler.

Less consuming.

Lin Yue spoke softly.

"You don't have to protect me every second to keep me safe," she said.

Shen Yichen looked at her.

"I know," he said quietly.

A pause.

"But I still want to."

Silence.

And for the first time—

that desire didn't feel like fear.

It felt like choice trying to replace instinct.

Unsteady.

But real.
