Chapter 8 - BLOODY REUNION

Those words settled into the walls, into the silence, into Lila.

She held Leo a little tighter.

Not out of fear this time—

But out of uncertainty.

Because Ethan had changed.

And that… was almost more dangerous.

THE FIRST ORDER

Ethan turned sharply, already pulling out his phone.

"Lock down every route Daniel can use to move," he said into the line. "Ports, private airstrips, warehouses—everything."

A pause.No mistakes this time."

He ended the call and immediately dialed another.

"I want everything on Daniel Cross," he said. "Businesses, properties, shell companies—dig into places that don't officially exist."

His tone dropped colder.

"And if anyone is hiding him… they go down with him."

He hung up.

No hesitation.

No mercy.Ethan."

Her voice stopped him.

He turned.

Lila was standing now, Leo beside her, holding onto her hand.

"You don't understand what you're getting into," she said quietly.

Ethan's expression didn't change. "Then explain it to me."

Lila hesitated.

Not because she didn't want to speak—

But because speaking meant reliving it.

"…Daniel doesn't lose," she said finally.A pause.

"He doesn't argue. He doesn't walk away."

Her voice dropped.

"He takes."

Silence.

Ethan stepped closer.

"And yet you left him."

Lila laughed softly—but there was no humor in it.

"I didn't leave him," she said. "I escaped him."

That word changed everything.Lila's hands trembled slightly, but she didn't stop.

"He controlled everything—my movements, my choices, even who I spoke to," she said. "When I told him I didn't want the marriage… he smiled."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"What did he do?"

Lila looked up at him.

And this time—

There was no holding back.

"He said I would come back on my own."

Silence.

Heavy."He said I didn't understand what leaving him would cost me."

Leo looked up, confused. "Mommy…?"

Lila quickly softened, brushing his hair.

"It's okay, baby," she whispered.

But her eyes told a different story.

THE WARNING

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"Then let him come," he said.

Lila's head snapped up. "No."

Ethan's gaze sharpened. "He's already coming."

"That's exactly why you don't understand!" she snapped, stepping closer now. "You think this is a fight you can control—but Daniel doesn't fight fair."

Ethan's voice dropped.

"Neither do I."

Silence.

That answer unsettled her.

Because she believed him.Ethan's phone buzzed.

He looked down.

Unknown number.

He answered without hesitation.

"…Speak."

A familiar voice came through.

Calm.

Mocking.

"I was wondering how long it would take you to figure it out."

Daniel.

Ethan's grip tightened.

"You made a mistake," Ethan said coldly.Daniel chuckled softly.

"No," he replied. "I made a move."

Lila's breath caught immediately.

Ethan's eyes flicked to her.

"Where are you?" Ethan demanded.

Daniel ignored the question.

"Tell me something," he said instead. "Does she still look at you the same way?"

Ethan's jaw clenched.

"You don't get to talk about her."

Daniel's voice dropped slightly.

"I always get to talk about what belongs to me."

Ethan's voice turned lethal. She was never yours."

A pause.

Then Daniel said something quieter.

More dangerous.

"Then why did she run from you too?"

That hit.

Ethan didn't respond immediately.

Daniel continued:

"You think you're protecting them now… but you already proved you couldn't before."

Silence.

Then—

"I'm coming for what's mine," Daniel said

And the line went dead.

AFTER THE CALL

The room felt colder.

Lila looked shaken.

Leo clung to her again.

Ethan stood still.

Then slowly—

He looked up.

And whatever was in his eyes now—

Was no longer hesitation.

"This ends," he said quietly.

Lila shook her head. "It's not that simple."

Ethan stepped closer.

"It is for me."

A pause.

Then he added:

"He wanted a war."

His voice dropped.

"Now he has one."

The night was too quiet.

That was the first sign.

Ethan stood near the window of the Blackwell estate, his instincts on edge, every nerve alert. The tall iron gates outside stood firm, the bold inscription gleaming under the dim lights:

THE BLACKWELLS

Then—

Gunshots.

Two sharp cracks split the silence.

Ethan's head snapped up.

Security alarms blared instantly.

"Sir!" one of his men shouted through the comms. "We're under attack—"

The line cut.

Ethan's expression turned deadly.

THE ARRIVAL

Outside the gates—

Two guards lay on the ground.

Daniel Cross stood tall, gun in hand, surrounded by armed assassins.

His presence alone felt like chaos.

"LILA!" he shouted, his voice echoing through the estate. "Come out here right now—with my stepson!"

He fired into the air.

BANG!

Ethan!" Daniel continued, his voice cold and unhinged. "I didn't come for you. But I will blow your head off if you stand in my way!"

Inside—

Lila flinched at the sound.

Leo trembled beside her.

Another gunshot rang out.

Leo panicked.

And in that moment—

He ran.

Straight into Ethan's arms.

"Daddy!" he cried.

The word hit Ethan like nothing else ever had.

For a second—

Everything stopped.

Ethan looked down at him. Then held him tighter.

"…I've got you," he said quietly.Ethan turned sharp instantly.

"Everyone stay low. No one moves without my command."

He pulled out his phone and dialed.

"Police. Now."

A pause.

"They'll be there in ten minutes," he said after hanging up.

Ten minutes.

Too long.

Ethan's mind moved fast.

Then—

A plan formed.

He turned to Lila.

"Follow me."

Her eyes widened. "Are you mad?! He's out there with guns!"

Ethan's voice dropped.

"Trust me."

She hesitated.

But then she looked at Leo.

And followed.The gates slowly opened.

Ethan stepped out first.

Calm.

Controlled.

Lila behind him, holding Leo tightly.

Daniel smiled.

"There you are," he said.

Ethan walked forward slowly.

Every step calculated.

Hidden in the shadows—

His men were already in position.Waiting.

Ethan stopped a few feet away.

Then said the words that shocked everyone:

"Here they are."

Lila stiffened.

Ethan didn't look at her.

"You want them?" he said calmly.

A pause.

"You can have them."

Daniel's smile widened.

"You did the right thing," he said mockingly. "Always running from responsibility, Ethan."Lila's heart pounded.

But she played along.

She stepped forward slowly, holding Leo close.

Closer.

Closer to Daniel.Then—

She ran.

Fast.

Backwards.

Straight toward Ethan.

"Now!" Ethan roared.Gunfire exploded instantly.

Ethan's men opened fire.

Daniel's assassins fell one by one.

Chaos.

Smoke.

Shouting.

Bullets tearing through the night.

Daniel raised his gun—

Aimed straight at Ethan—

BANG!

But before he could fire again—

One of Ethan's guards shot him.The bullet hit Daniel's hand.

The gun dropped.

He screamed in pain.Sirens filled the air.

Police cars stormed in.

Officers rushed forward, tackling Daniel to the ground.

He struggled.

But it was over.

They pinned him down, cuffed him, dragged him away.

Daniel's eyes locked onto Lila one last time—

But this time—

There was no control left.

Only defeat.Silence slowly returned.

Smoke cleared.

Ethan turned immediately—

"Lila—"

Then he saw it.

Blood.

On the ground.

On her leg.

His heart dropped.

"Lila!"

She staggered slightly.

Leo started crying immediately.

"Mommy! Mommy!"

Ethan caught her before she could fall.

"Stay with me," he said, panic breaking through for the first time.

"I'm fine…" she whispered weakly.

But she wasn't.

THE HOSPITAL

Hours later—

The chaos had faded into quiet beeping machines and white walls.

Lila lay on the hospital bed.

Bandaged.

Stable.

Alive.

Leo slept beside her, exhausted from crying.

Ethan sat next to her.

Silent.Watching.

Thinking.

Regretting.

THE PROMISE

Lila slowly opened her eyes.

Ethan leaned forward immediately.

"Hey…"

She looked at him.

Tired.

But present.

A long silence passed.

Then Ethan spoke.Soft.

Real.

"I promise," he said, his voice steady but filled with something deeper now. "I will be there for you."

A pause.

Then he glanced at Leo.

"And for him."

His hand gently covered hers.

"No more running."

No more doubt.

No more distance.

Lila didn't speak. But she didn't pull away either.

And this time—

That was enough.
