The Shape of What Remains
The Shape of What Remains is a quiet, interior novel set in Baguio City, Philippines. It follows Elian, a solitary young man living a life stripped to its essentials, as he meets Mara — a warm, grounded coworker — and briefly experiences connection and fullness. But Elian cannot receive this gift cleanly. His loneliness, long unexamined, transforms his feelings into obsession: he begins surveilling Mara's behavior, misreading ordinary moments as betrayal, and withdrawing into a constructed narrative of abandonment. When Mara confronts him, the fragile illusion collapses. The final act is a reckoning — told partly from Mara's perspective — in which both characters process what was real, what was projected, and what it means to carry an experience that never fully resolves. The novel ends not with healing, but with Elian learning to walk forward holding something that will never fully disappear.
