Cain got branded as the first sinner, which is really unfair if you think about it.
Look at the story from their perspective. A person was angry at their brother so they hit him in the head hard. The concept of death wasn't discovered yet, thus the subsequent death could not have been intentional.
If you didn't know you could kill someone, you probably wouldn't hold back when you're angry at them.
