Chapter 1 - 001. Akira, Konoha no Oni

The heat inside the Forest of Death was oppressive, thick with the stench of rotting vegetation, damp mud, and blood.

Seventeen-year-old Akira stood silent on a thick tree branch thirty feet up, his hand resting tightly on the worn hilt of the standardised short-sword strapped across his lower back. Beside him, his squadmates—Minoru and Ren, two fellow civilian Genin who had failed the exams twice before—were breathing heavily, their faces pale under the green canopy shadows.

Akira wasn't the strongest in his class, nor was he born into a proud clan with inherited jutsu or massive chakra reserves. But he was practical. While others dreamed of flashy fireballs, Akira studied combat geometry, physics, terrain manipulation, and the cold reality of attrition. He knew how to survive.

"Akira..." whispered Minoru, his hand trembling on his kunai holster.

"We got the Heaven Scroll from that Grass squad an hour ago. We should head straight for the central tower."

"Quiet," Akira said, his voice low and steady.

He wasn't looking at the scroll in Minoru's pack. He was staring at the dense foliage fifty meters to the north. The forest had suddenly gone dead silent. No birds. No insects.

"Retreat," Akira ordered sharply.

"We're moving south. Now."

Before Minoru or Ren could move, a suffocating pressure slammed into the clearing like an iron weight. Minoru dropped to his knees, hyperventilating in sheer terror. Ren gagged, clutching his throat.

From the shadow of a colossal trunk, a tall figure stepped forward, wearing the conical hat and long robes of a Kusagakure shinobi. A long, unnatural tongue flicked out from beneath the cloth.

"Oh?" a voice echoed, smooth and reptilian. "I expected scared children, but you... your reaction time was almost respectable."

Pale yellow pupils with vertical slits locked onto Akira.

Akira's heart hammered against his ribs, but his trained, analytical mind forced his body into a low stance. He recognised an apex predator when he saw one.

"Minoru. Ren. Drop the scroll," Akira commanded softly, unclipping his own pouch.

"We yield our passage. We have no interest in fighting a master."

The disguised Sannin tilted his head, a cruel smile spreading across his face. "Smart, recognised the gap with a single jutsu... still useful for warm-up."

In a blur of absolute speed, Orochimaru disappeared.

Akira didn't rely on his eyes. The moment the Sannin moved, Akira yanked a fine steel wire woven around his wrist, triggering three customised flash-bang tags at his own chest level and a Body Replacement with a rigged log below.

BOOM!

A blinding light and acrid chemical smoke filled the air. Orochimaru's pale hand shattered the replacement log, snaring a secondary trap that released a cloud of pulverised iron and sulfur.

"Tch," Orochimaru hissed from the smoke, flicking the dust off his sleeve. His yellow eyes narrowed, genuinely intrigued.

Akira landed heavily in the mud below, catching both of his paralysed squadmates and dragging them into the roots of a giant tree. He didn't waste chakra; he pulled a pair of wire-netting traps from his vest, aiming to pin the Sannin's landing zone if he pursued.

A shadow blurred down from the canopy. Akira thrust his short-sword upward with precise, biomechanical leverage, aiming straight for the gap between the neck and collarbone.

Clang!

Orochimaru caught the blade between two fingers. The force of Akira's strike didn't even make the pale hand tremble.

"Impulsive," Orochimaru purred, stepping closer. "Chained traps, blinding agents, sensory misdirection, and calm composure... unusual for a nameless Genin."

"Oh! Konoha, Full of sprouts."

The killing intent surrounding him intensified until Akira's vision flickered with black spots. His muscles burned, his lungs starved for air, but Akira forced his chin up, staring directly into the yellow, slit-pupil eyes. He knew he was outmatched. He knew this was the end of his road. But he refused to die like an animal in the mud.

Orochimaru leaned down, his pale face inches from Akira's, his long tongue tasting the air filled with Akira's sweat and steel.

"Tell me, Kid," Orochimaru murmured softly, a genuine spark of curious amusement in his voice.

"What is your name?"

Akira swallowed the blood pooling in his mouth, gripping his sword's hilt with white knuckles.

"Akira," he spat out, his voice raspy but firm.

"Konoha no Oni."

"Akira..." Orochimaru repeated, testing the name on his tongue as if savoring a fine, brief moment of entertainment.

"A pity you weren't born with better soil to grow in."

With a flick of Orochimaru's wrist, the short-sword snapped like glass.

In the next fraction of a second, pale, cold fingers struck Akira's throat with lethal, effortless precision. The world tilted violently. The sound of his squadmates' screams faded into a distant, muffled echo as the cold swamp mud rushed up to meet his falling body.

Akira's eyes fluttered closed, the suffocating heat of the Forest of Death giving way to a sudden, absolute darkness.

Then, a heart-beat.

It wasn't a slow, dying pulse. It was a violent, sledgehammer strike against the inside of a ribcage.
