Chapter 12 - Unknown, but different

All 3 of us stood still for a moment. The lion stared at Carl then back at me, before turning to where the turrets are. As it turned away from me I rushed to it, immediately getting its attention.

It readied its claw to attack, but I stopped before I reached its range. As it saw me stop it leaped toward me, trying to pounce on me, I stepped back. Carl stepped forward slashing at its tail, almost hitting one of the joints, and flinching it. I immediately lunged the spear up at its eyes, but it tilted its head, making the spear hit its forehead.

Before I could move away, it slashed at me. I was barely able to move the spear in the way, but the hit knocked me to the ground.

At the same time, it swung its tail toward Carl. Carl again blocked with the sword. This time the sword hit a joint cutting straight through. The lion shrieked as it leaped back toward the barricades.

Carl ran toward me, as I got back up breathing heavily. I took a deep breath, "I'll be fine. Be ready."

It stared at the both of us for a moment. I held the spear pointing toward it. But, before any of us could move the turrets started again, flinching it.

I stepped forward, trying to pierce its eye, but hit its nose instead.

It immediately leaped above me toward Carl. Carl barely avoided it crashing on him, as it falls and immediately looses its balance, falling to the ground.

The bullets hits its under belly, tearing through the flesh, making it flinch. Carl finally steps forward slashing at its remaining eye, finally blinding it.

It snapped back up, but now blind, it started backing away step by step, like a cat when its head gets stuck in some curtain.

I ran bellow it, trying to pierce its heart, but as the spear head went in its chest it leaped back, the spear now stuck in its ribs was yanked from my hand. But it immediately lost its balance and fell over. It started uselessly flailing its limbs, in confusion, and having been very hurt appeared to no longer want to continue. It almost made me feel sorry for it.

I carefully got close to the spear and with a final precise push pierced its heart. After a few more moments of flailing it finally went limp.

I took the spear out as I said, "We should go back... we are covered in its blood, we need a good shower."

Carl stared at my face for a moment, before chuckling, "Yeah, but before that-"

He went over to the wall, knocking at different places and looking it over, "Good, this wasn't damaged too badly."

As we returned, Talor was waiting near the gate, "Th-that was incredible. It normally takes so much longer, and neither of you got seriously hurt!"

"Couldn't have done it without your support." I replied. Carl nodded.

"Still..." he sighed. "Anyways, you two need to shower before breakfast."

We nodded, I followed Carl to the shower. It was barely large enough for one person to shower. I asked Carl to go in first.

It felt nice to finally shower. That reminded me to have Angel take a shower as well.

Afterwards, we went back to the main building. Carl greeted us again at the gate. As we entered, Angel held my sleeve from the right side of the gate. At the time she still wasn't comfortable with the other two, or so it appeared. I signalled the two to go on, before kneeling before her, "I'm here, you have nothing to worry about."

She stared at my face for a moment. She appeared to not know what to say. I pat her head, "Everything is fine now. I told you I won't leave, didn't I?"

She nodded before looking down the hallway. I smiled, nodding, "Let's go have breakfast with the others."

As I got up she pulled my sleeve, "That was... scarry..."

I nodded, "Yeah, but its gone now, you have nothing to worry."

She finally let go of my sleeve. I intended my right hand to her, "Should we join the other two?"

She stared at my hand for a moment, before holding it with her left, "Yeah."

As we walked toward the dining room I asked her, "Do you fear those two?"

"Umm... no... I just... d-don't know them."

"But you don't know me either, do you?"

"You are... different."

By then we had reached the dining room, "Different, huh?"

After breakfast, Talor asked, "Could you come with me? I'd like to collect that lion's corps."

"For biogas?" I asked.

"Not just that, their scent works as a nice repellent for other mutants, and we keep the bones for display, since encountering something like that is rare."

"Weren't you so scared a few minutes ago?" Carl retorted.

"And why wouldn't I be? That thing was massive, if not for Jakub, you would have gotten yourself hurt at the very least." Talor scolded.

I looked toward Angel, "I wanted to have her take a shower."

"It won't take long, having you with me would make me feel a lot safer."

I sighed, told Angel, "I'll be back soon, be good, okay?"

She looked at me then at Talor, then nodded, "I will wait."

I then stood up, "Let's get this done quickly."

"Roger that." he said smiling.
