Chapter 23 - Chapter 23

Second Earth Phase: Day 13

"We need to sit down and discuss with what we're dealing with", Nass said as she placed her mug down. The previous day had gone by in a blur, Ray going to work and Kobie lounging at home doing nothing. "First of, explain to me as to why you're here this dawn, disturbing my 'royal sleep', Kobie retorted as he stretches himself out on the sofa.

Nass: Ray, do you think it's safe to pass by the crime scene by this time

Ray: Depends on luck

Nass: Luck?

Ray: Yes. We don't know what to expect when we reach there, so if you want my honest opinion, I'd say prepare us for 2 days and let's work on the theory right now.

Kobie quietly observed the manner in which Ray spoke. He couldn't quite point what it was, but Ray was changing. How many days has it been and he's already being cautious, he thought.

Kobie: Speaking of theory, we need to find the murder weapon.

Nass: (Sitting up) Why the murder weapon?

Kobie: For starters, it will help determine who we're dealing with; whether the person is skilled in melee weapons or a type of gun and we might notice whether it's his first time or not

Ray: How do you know it's a male? We never saw the person.

Cass replaced Nass at that moment and got up. " If you know something very important Kobie, now is the best time to speak up".

Ray's POV

As it turns out, Kobie 'saw' the killer, not outright, but he saw a figure of a slender guy, about his height, pull the trigger on both of us. How he was able to see the guy is still a miracle to me. I sighed and stepped into the office. Amsterdam was sitting calmly at her desk, fidgeting with her gloves.

Then I realised, her hands don't really look smooth if you pay close attention to it. "Amsterdam", i asked and quickly grab her hands, "is there a particular reason as to why you love these gloves soo much?". She instantly removed her hands from my grasps. "SHUSH!! Not so loud!", she yelled and quickly ran to lock the door. I stared at her, wondering what could have possibly prompted her to lock it.

Ray:(pacing) So, is there actually something you're hiding?

Amsterdam: I don't know how to say this to you, but(dropping the gloves unto the table) I have a pretty simple explanation for these.

She stretches out her hands for me to observe the callouses on them.

"I'm suspecting that Sydney said something to you. A suspicion she has. Or maybe it's not. You see(twirling her pen) when I was young, I had a thing for archery. Ray don't interrupt", she said whilst I attempted to move towards her. I dragged a chair and as discreet as I could, sat down.

"Good. I was 7 when I started archery. But one day, I happened to encounter a scene. I was at school by that time, and there were two older kids having an argument. Their fight became soo heated from nowhere no-one had realised that the school was being attacked".

"Attacked?!"."Yes! I was shocked too. What has a private institution got to do with a school shooting".

I raised my brows at her.

Amsterdam: What?

Ray: You know it's still a school regardless

Amsterdam: Yeah but I thought we were special. Anyways, it made sense really, because it was in the second Fire Phase. That day, loads of people died. And then I wondered, 'Why does a gun easily kill people whiles an arrow takes time'...

*********

Sydney hesitated to knock on the door. Glancing at and rubbing her tattoo, she murmured something.

'Some things are best left hidden. But I know everything now, Miss Bourne'.
