In response to Master Wu's words, his wife ignored him. She walked straight outside, grabbed a basket, and nimbly climbed up the bamboo ladder to the roof to collect radishes.
Master Wu dawdled while putting on his clothes, then turned to go eat dinner. Only when he saw the egg in his noodle soup did his expression brighten.
After finishing the meal, he tossed the bowls and chopsticks onto the table, clasped his hands behind his back, and walked out. It was just dusk, and the yellow sunset shone on his face, making it look even more sallow.
A chilly strip of white radish was tossed down from the rooftop, sliding right down the back of his neck. "Do the dishes! What are you standing there for?"
"Ouch, ouch!" he yelped, reaching into his clothes while dashing toward the courtyard gate.
He walked all the way to the left side of the Bai Family Ancestral Hall and grunted toward his house. "Humph! The sages really weren't wrong. Only women and petty men are hard to raise."
