Tina panicked and dialed Ken's number again and it went straight to voice mail. She started pleading for him to call her in her head. She dialed his number time and time again, and every time that she did it would go straight to voicemail again. She became more terrified that something happened to him.
Finally, a nurse walked up to her and asked if everything was alright. Tina looked up at her with tears streaming down and said, "You really think you can help? I just found out that my dad is on his deathbed, and that he has been lying to me since I was a child about my mom. Who has been dead and replaced with my aunt, and if that was not enough to deal with. I was on the phone with my boyfriend that was supposed to be picking me up for graduation, but it sounded like he got in an accident while we were talking. So yes, there is definitely something wrong."
Tina watched her face saddened by everything that she said as if she could feel part of the pain that she was going through. Tina thought that she must be new as a nurse because most of them never seem to care about what the patients are going through. Then she corrected her thinking they at least cared. It's not like they want them to go through it, but they never seem to feel any of the pain that the people were experiencing.
Tina started to feel bad that she made the nurse sad but thought about how worried she was about her father and her boyfriend put it right out of her mind. The nurse said, "I'm so sorry. Can I get a counselor to come to talk to you?"
Tina looked at her with tears streaming down her face and said, "I just what to know what happened to Ken."
The nurse looked at her with a question and then realized that she must have been referring to her boyfriend. She asked, "Do you know where he was at the time that you were talking to him, and you heard something?"
Tina started thinking and trying to picture where he should have been while he was calling her. Knowing that he would have been close to his house, and he would have been on his way to her place while they were talking. She doubted that he would have changed directions right away. Tina didn't know for sure what he did but she knew that if he called her like usual when he left his house that he still had to have been pretty close to it.
Tina started to say the street that he would have been on when a tremendously loud siren went off announcing the street that she was just about to say. Tina looked up in horror as it announced that there was a critical accident there and that 2 ambulances were going to be needed at the scene. Tina's heart sank, she knew that it must have been Ken, and not only that it had to be pretty bad if they were calling for two ambulances.
With a trembling hand, the nurse touched her shoulder and looked so sad and said, "I know we will do everything that we can to get him better."
Tina didn't know that she could cry so hard. It was just that everything was against her today. She stood there and watched as the two ambulances left with their sirens squealing all the way. In a way, she wanted to hop in the back of one to see if it was Ken or not, but she knew that they would never let her do that.
She stood there and just watched them drive out of sight before she turned and went back inside. They were not letting her see her dad and at least for now and every second seemed like a lifetime as she was waiting for the ambulances to return. At one point time just seemed to stand still or at least it was feeling that way for her and every time she dialed ken's number all she was getting was his voicemail. Then she thought that she knew a few others that live on his street and if they had not left already, she might be able to have them look and see if they could see anything.
Tina knew that there were only three that lived on his street. So, she dialed them up one after the other. The first one rang for what seemed to be 20 times before she answered, and Tina found out that she was already at graduation and had been for the last couple of hours. As soon as Tina heard that she hung up on her in mid-sentence as she said, "Sorry I have to go."
The girl looked at her phone and thought that was rude, then shook her head and then went back to betting ready for everything to start.
The second one picked up on the second ring and started asking Tina why she was not there yet since it was about to start in less than an hour. They were still going to go over the last-minute things and she was going to miss them if she didn't hurry.
Tina asked as soon as she could get a word in, "Did you see Ken on your way there? or is he around? All I am getting is his voice mail when I call him."
Kate shook her head and said, "I have not seen him in the last hour that I have been here. I will look around, and I will tell him to give you a call as soon as I see him."
Tina said, "Okay thanks." She was glad that at least one person would tell him to call her, but she thought that he would be doing that if he could already.
Tina hung up and she was down to her final hope of hearing anything. She crossed her fingers and started a silent prayer that she would answer and be able to tell her something. She dialed the number, and it rang a few times just before it went to the message she said, "Hi, sorry I was just talking to Britany."
Tina asked, "Have you seen Ken?"
She replied, "No. But I am stuck in traffic. The street is all tied up, and it doesn't look like I will be moving anytime soon."
Tina was afraid to ask but she knew that she had no choice. "Can you see anything?"
The sadness was overwhelming, and she didn't know how much more she would be able to take. The tears just kept flowing as she desperately listened for a reply. Cindy said, "I am looking but I really can't see anything, but it does look like there is an ambulance and a couple of cop cars that are blocking the road."
Tina thought that just because there was an accident didn't mean that he was involved. He could have just dropped his phone at a sudden stop or something. I am just getting all worked up over nothing. That is what she told herself and was hoping that it was the case.
Cindy said, "No I am trying to get a better look and there is just no way to see anything from here."
Tina replied, "Thanks, Cindy." She thought that it was not much help but at least she tried.
Tina was pacing back and forth not knowing what else to do with herself as she waited for the ambulances to return. After ten minutes of waiting, she went back inside and looked to see if there was any way that she could see her father again. As soon as she tried to get to where he was, she was stopped by the nurses saying that he was in no condition right now for anyone to see him.
Tina thought that they must be trying something, or they would just up his pain meds and let him go to sleep. The way that they had talked to her before was like they had exhausted the things that they could do.
Tina sat down and she was going to try and wait for them to call her back because she knew that sooner or later, they would. She was only able to sit there for a few minutes before she became too nervous just waiting and sitting there.
Tina had a brief thought of wondering what was going on with graduation when she looked up at the clock and noticed that it was past time for it to start. It was not long before the sounds of the sirens of the ambulances returning came flooding into the hospital. The loudspeaker announced that they needed the trauma kit in the emergency room and it was like all hands on deck were called the doctors and nurses seemed to come from everywhere and headed to the back.
Tina tried to stop one of the nurses to ask what exactly was going on and the nurse said in a mean tone, "We have some critically ill patients coming in right now we don't have time to deal with you at the moment. We will have someone come and talk to you once the crises are taken care of."
Tina let her go so that she could go help it was not like she was trying to stop her in the first place she just wanted to know what was going on.
The first ambulance screeched to a stop outside the door and the trauma team rushed out to help bring them in.
Tina looked out the window to try and see anything that she could, but she was not the only one that was trying to watch, and they didn't bring them in the front door they took them around to the other door which was directly into the emergency room itself. Tina was slightly relieved even though she couldn't tell who it was she could tell that they were still alive, but it sounded like they were in a lot of pain.
