Chapter 76 - Chapter 75: The Silver-Moon Summons

Chapter 75: The Silver-Moon Summons

The morning mist had not yet lifted from the river when the Void Fox woke me.

She did not leap or growl. She simply sat at the foot of my bedding with her three silver tails wrapped around her paws, staring toward the deep heart of the Verdant Abyss. Her golden eyes were wide and unfocused, as if she were listening to a voice only she could hear.

"What is it?" I murmured, sitting up carefully so I would not wake Sally, who slept with her head on my arm and her golden hair spread across the pillow.

Calling, the fox said through the seal, in that thin, uncertain voice I was slowly learning to recognize. Many voices. Far away. They sound like... like the ones before the Drake.

I stepped outside the tent and let my divine scan flow outward.

Last night the river had been calm. Now every ripple on its surface moved in the same direction, northeast, as if something deep in the land were drawing the water toward it. The spatial mana in the air had thickened overnight, and when I focused, I found a faint silver thread winding through the mist, over the mountains, across the forests and into a region I could not map. It was a thread of resonance, the same law that lived in my fox's blood, humming in answer to something enormous and old.

"So that is what you were absorbing all night," I said softly.

The fox pressed against my leg, trembling a little. Not with fear, I realized. With longing.

Behind me, the tent flap rustled. Sally came out wrapped in a blanket, rubbing her eyes, her hair messy and her expression soft with sleep. "You are awake early. Is something wrong?"

"Not wrong," I said. "Someone is coming."

I had barely finished the sentence when the air in front of us rippled like the surface of a pond.

Three figures stepped out of nothing, one after another, their feet landing silently on the grass. They wore pale hooded robes embroidered with crescent moons, and when their hoods fell back, I saw sharp, elegant faces, golden eyes, and fox ears twitching atop their heads. Four slender silver tails swayed behind the woman in front. The two warriors behind her had three tails each and carried slim curved blades at their hips.

They had crossed thousands of kilometers in a single step. Spatial travel, then, and skilled.

Sally gasped softly and moved half a pace behind me. I raised a calm hand to show her there was no danger. The three strangers had not drawn their weapons. They had not even looked at me.

They were looking at the fox.

The woman at the front went down on one knee in the damp grass. Her two companions followed immediately, pressing their fists to their chests and bowing their heads.

"Forgive our intrusion, honored one," the woman said, her voice trembling with something between awe and relief. "I am Aelith, scout captain of the Silver-Moon Fox Clan. Last night, the Ancestral Altar of our sanctuary began to hum for the first time in five hundred years. We followed the resonance through the night. It led us here."

The Void Fox tilted her head and said nothing. But her tails lifted slightly, and the silver light along their tips pulsed in time with Aelith's breathing.

I let the silence stretch for a moment before I answered. "She is not a possession, and I am not here to take anything from your clan. If you have come for her, you will have to ask her yourselves."

Aelith lifted her head, and for the first time she looked at me, really looked. I felt her gaze touch the edges of my aura and flinch away, as if she had stared into the sun.

"I would never presume to take her," she said carefully. "My lord, we have come only to ask. Our patriarch begs your permission to invite you and your companion to the Grand Fox Sanctuary. Not as prisoners, and not as supplicants, but as guests. He believes your fox carries a bloodline our people have waited for since the age of the Ancestors."

Sally let out a quiet breath beside me. "A whole clan waiting for a three-tailed cub?" she whispered.

"It is the law in her blood," I whispered back. "Not the tails."

I crouched down and held out my hand. The fox looked at it, then at the three kneeling fox-kin, then back at me. Her ears flattened, then lifted again.

"You do not have to go," I told her. "Not for them, and not for me. Whatever you choose, I will keep you safe."

The fox was silent for so long that Aelith's shoulders began to shake. Then she padded forward, climbed up my arm and settled across my shoulders, her tails curling around my neck like a scarf.

Go, she said. But you come too.

I smiled. "Of course I do."

Aelith bowed so deeply that her forehead touched the ground. "Thank you, my lord. We will open the path."

"Do not trouble yourselves," I said, and rose to my feet. "Your path is long, and I would rather not leave my wife waiting at the end of it."

I reached out toward the silver thread in the air and took it between two fingers. Space bent. The mist folded. A tunnel of rippling silver light opened in front of us, and its far end was no longer in the Abyss at all.

The three scouts stared. Aelith's mouth opened, but no sound came out.

"After you," I said, with a faint smile, and took Sally's hand.

The journey lasted less than a breath. When the light faded, we stood at the top of a vast stone stair that descended into the Grand Fox Sanctuary.

It was far bigger than the glimpse I had caught last night through the fox's resonance. A city of white jade and spirit-wood spread across a hidden valley, wrapped in layers of ancient spatial barriers that shimmered like soap bubbles. Elegant towers rose between bridges of living vines, and silver lanterns floated in the air above, though it was only morning. Hundreds of fox-kin in human form crowded the streets below, and all of them had stopped to look up at us.

Their ears were pricked and their tails swayed. Some had their hands pressed to their mouths. A small girl with two tails was pointing straight at my shoulder and tugging her mother's sleeve.

Sally squeezed my hand tightly. "Sonu, they are all staring."

"They are staring at her," I said gently. "Walk with your head up. You are my wife. They will not harm you."

She laughed under her breath. "Your wife has never been looked at like she is a legend before."

We descended the stair together. At the bottom, a line of armored fox warriors blocked the road, spears raised, until a heavy voice rang across the courtyard.

"Lower your weapons."

The warriors parted, and an old fox-kin leaned on a wooden staff, his white hair flowing over his shoulders and five silver tails trailing behind him. His face was lined and weary, but his golden eyes burned with a fierce, desperate hope. This could only be the patriarch.

Beside him stood a tall elder in dark robes, her expression sharp and unimpressed. I recognized the tone before she even spoke.

"So this is the savior," she said coolly. "A human tamer and a three-tailed cub. Forgive me, Patriarch, but our people have been fooled by false omens before."

"Elder Maren," the patriarch said quietly. "Look at her."

The elder's eyes moved to the fox on my shoulder, and I felt the Law Resonance stir. The air around us rippled faintly. Several floating lanterns flickered. Elder Maren's mouth tightened, but she said nothing more.

The patriarch inclined his head to me. It was a small, dignified bow, one head of an ancient clan offering respect to another. "I am Veyran, patriarch of the Silver-Moon Branch. Welcome, young lord. Whatever you decide, you will be treated as honored kin in this city. But I beg you, before you leave, to let her walk to the Ancestral Altar. Only once."

"If she wishes," I said.

The fox answered by hopping down from my shoulder. She trotted ahead without waiting for permission, past the warriors, past the elders, through the silent crowd, and every fox-kin she passed dropped their gaze and bowed. I followed with Sally at my side, and the patriarch walked beside us with his hand trembling on his staff.

The council hall at the end of the avenue was a vast circular chamber, with a burning altar at its center and a colossal statue rising behind it. The statue was carved from white jade, the figure of a fox with nine long tails fanning out behind her like the rays of a sun. Her eyes were closed, her head slightly lifted, her expression peaceful and impossibly sad.

The fox stopped at the foot of the altar, and the room fell silent.

Then, slowly, she stepped onto the first stone stair.

Every spatial lantern in the hall flared at once. The flames on the altar turned from orange to silver. The air bent, and I felt the Law Resonance in my chest surge until it was almost painful, my own space mastery rising as if answering a call. Around us, the old fox-kin gasped and dropped to their knees. Even Elder Maren leaned heavily on the wall, her face drained of color.

The fox climbed another step. Her three tails lifted, glowing so brightly I had to squint. At the base of her spine, a thin silver line began to appear, a fourth tail trying to emerge from nothing.

"Sonu," Sally breathed, gripping my arm. "Is she—"

"She is awakening," I said, and poured a steady stream of mana toward her to keep the surge from breaking her small body. "Not completely. It is only the beginning."

Behind the statue, a low rumble rolled through the stone. The nine-tailed fox's closed eyes did not open, but a thin seam of silver light split the floor behind the altar, widening into a narrow stair that descended into darkness. Cold air rose from it, carrying a scent of old jade and something I could not name.

The patriarch fell to his knees with tears running down his weathered face.

"Five hundred years," he whispered. "The Ancestor's vault. It has opened."

I looked down the dark stair, and the fox looked back at me with shining golden eyes.

Together, she said again.

I took Sally's hand, and together we stepped forward.
