The stair descended for a long time. The walls were lined with pale jade, and every few steps a silver lantern flickered into life as the Void Fox passed, as though the vault itself had been waiting five centuries to recognize her. Sally walked close beside me, her hand still locked in mine. Behind us came Patriarch Veyran, leaning on his staff, with Elder Maren and a small circle of senior elders following in a respectful and nervous silence.
At the bottom of the stair lay a circular chamber, and it was unlike anything I had seen in this world. There was no treasure and no weapon. In the centre stood a shallow pool of liquid silver light, perfectly still, reflecting a ceiling painted with a night sky of nine moons. Around the pool, murals covered the walls in graceful strokes: a great nine-tailed fox standing above a burning world, a crowd of smaller foxes kneeling at her feet, and finally a single tail falling from her body like a shooting star.
"This is the Ancestor's Pool," Veyran said quietly, his voice echoing against the stone. "Our legends say that she left a part of her essence here before she departed, so that one day, when a true Spatial Law bloodline returned, her descendants might be lifted out of their decline. But the pool has not answered anyone for five hundred years."
The Void Fox trotted to the edge of the pool and looked down at her own reflection. Three silver tails, and a fourth one, still faint, flickering at the base of her spine. The surface of the pool trembled as if it were holding its breath.
They are hungry, she said to me through the seal. Her voice was soft and certain. Not for food. For the way home.
"Can you help them?" I asked.
I can give them a little of me. Not all. I will not be hurt. She turned her golden eyes toward me. You will hold the door open?
"I will," I said, and stepped forward until I stood at the edge of the pool beside her.
I extended my mana outward in a slow, steady stream, the same way I had done on the altar stair, and wrapped it around her small body like a second skin. The Law Resonance answered immediately. I felt my own mastery of space deepen and settle, and the Tamer Seal on my palm grew warm as the World Tree Sapling sent a thread of its endless vitality through the bond to support her.
The fox closed her eyes.
A single drop of silver light formed at the tip of each of her three tails, then a fourth at the faint line of the unborn tail. The drops rose into the air, glowing brighter and brighter, until they were small stars hanging in the vault. Then, one by one, they fell into the pool.
The surface of the Ancestor's Pool shattered into a thousand ripples. Silver light poured upward in a spiralling column that reached the ceiling and spread across the painted moons, and every lantern in the sanctuary above flared at once. A deep, resonant note, like a bell struck in the heart of the world, rolled through the stone.
"The essence," Elder Maren breathed, her hand pressed to her chest. "It is the true essence. I can feel it in my blood."
"Do not simply stand there," Veyran said hoarsely. "Call the clan."
It took the better part of the day. Fox-kin from every district of the sanctuary came down the narrow stair in orderly lines, young and old, warriors and scholars, mothers carrying infants wrapped in white cloth. Each of them dipped their hands into the pool, or touched a single drop of the light to their brow, and each of them reacted in the same way, gasping and trembling as their bloodlines awoke.
Sally and I watched from a quiet corner of the vault. I saw a two-tailed girl, the same child who had pointed at my shoulder that morning, laugh aloud as a third tail unfurled behind her. I saw warriors who had been stuck at four tails for decades drop to their knees as the fifth appeared, silver and radiant. I saw Elder Maren herself, stiff-backed and proud, press her face into her hands and weep when her own fifth tail rose behind her.
At the end of the long line, Patriarch Veyran touched the pool last. When he withdrew his hand, a sixth tail swayed behind him, and the ancient fox-kin who had spent five hundred years in despair straightened to his full height for the first time.
"This is only the beginning, my lord," he said to me, his eyes bright with tears. "The essence will continue to refine the bloodline of every fox who received it. In time, the strongest among us may reach the legendary stage, the true nine tails, as our Ancestor did. Without your fox, that road was closed to us forever."
"The credit belongs to her," I replied, nodding toward the Void Fox. She had curled up on the stone beside the pool, exhausted but content, and the fourth tail was now fully grown, shining pale silver behind her. "She chose to share it freely."
The patriarch bowed to the fox, then to me, with a depth that stirred something in my chest. "Then the Silver-Moon Clan owes her a debt it can never repay."
Later that evening, in a private pavilion above the sanctuary's central garden, tea was served on a low jade table. The hall was warm, lit by floating lanterns, and the night air outside smelled faintly of moonflowers. Veyran sat opposite us with his hands folded, and beside him, for the first time, was a young woman I had not yet met.
She was tall and slender, with long silver hair braided over one shoulder and five silver tails folded neatly behind her. Her robes were plain, but her bearing was calm and graceful, and she kept her gaze lowered with a quiet dignity that did not look like weakness.
"This is my eldest daughter, Mirael," Veyran said. "She is the most gifted of my children, and the first to receive the essence at the pool. My lord, I would like to make a request."
I set down my cup. "Speak."
"I wish to send her with you, to accompany the Void Fox as her attendant." He raised a hand before I could answer. "I do not mean that she should serve you as property. I mean that she would serve the fox, care for her, protect her, and learn from her. Our clan has no means of repaying what we have received, and I would prefer that my daughter's life be spent in the service of something greater than our pride. I also confess that I hope the favour of the Void Fox may one day bring our people lasting protection."
Mirael lifted her head and looked directly at Sally, not at me. "I would not come as a rival to anyone, Lady Sally. If you refuse, I will understand."
Sally was silent for a long while. She turned her teacup slowly in her hands, watching the steam curl upward. I did not speak. This was not my decision to make, and I did not want her to feel pressed by my presence.
"I will say something honestly," Sally said at last, in a low and thoughtful voice. "I am not a jealous woman by nature, but I have also never shared my husband's attention with anyone before today. I need to understand what this means before I agree."
"It means exactly what my father has said," Mirael replied softly. "I am here for the fox. Nothing else."
Sally studied her for several more moments. Then she looked at the Void Fox, who had padded into the pavilion and was now sitting at Mirael's feet, tilting her head with unmistakable interest. The fox's golden eyes shone with something warm, and she pressed her small body against the young woman's leg.
A slow smile appeared on Sally's face.
"She has already made up her mind, it seems," Sally said. "Very well. I agree, on one condition. Mirael will be treated as a guest of our household and a companion of the fox, not as a servant in any lesser sense. And if she ever wishes to return to her clan, no one will stop her."
Mirael bowed deeply, and when she rose, there was a faint shimmer in her golden eyes. "Thank you, Lady Sally. I will not fail you."
I reached over and squeezed Sally's hand under the table. She squeezed back.
"Now," I said, turning to the patriarch, "there is something I would like to ask, and I would prefer a plain answer. Why were the portals opened in this world? And why did your clan seek to capture those who entered?"
Veyran's expression grew grave. He set down his cup and was silent for a time before he spoke.
"Our home world is dying, my lord. For generations, the beast clans have fought one another over the best resources, the richest lands, the most precious bloodline treasures. The wars grew worse each century. Then the demons came, an invasion from beyond our borders, and our world was split between two enemies. There was no longer a safe place to raise our young." He drew a slow breath. "The elders decided that our only chance was to find a new home. So we opened portals into every world within reach of this galaxy, hoping to find one that could shelter us."
"And did you?" Sally asked gently.
"We found something stranger." He lifted his hand, and a small silver sphere of mana appeared above the table, expanding into a hazy projection. It showed a vast landmass drifting through the dark, its coasts wrapped in mist, its mountains crowned with clouds. "A floating continent, larger than our entire home world. It is rich in mana, rich in resources, and empty of any great power. It could shelter every beast-kin clan we have, and more."
I studied the image carefully. The sight of it stirred something in the back of my mind, but I could not yet name it, so I only nodded for him to continue.
"But to return to that continent, we must receive the permission of the Main Tribe, the Nine-Tailed Sovereign's court. They refused." His voice grew bitter. "The leaders of the beast world want its resources for themselves. And not only the continent. They want the resources of this entire galaxy. They intend to harvest it, as they have harvested every world before it, and our branch has no power to oppose them."
"So the captures," I said.
"Were desperation, and I will not pretend otherwise." He bowed his head. "We sought strong bloodlines, strong tamers, strong combatants. Anyone who might help us when the time comes. It was a wrong method, and I regret it."
I let the silence stand for a moment before I answered. "I do not hold it against your clan. But you said there was a condition on returning."
"Yes. The Main Tribe holds a ranking competition once every few centuries. The branches compete for territory, for status, for permission. The next one has not yet been announced, but when it opens, any tribe that earns a high enough ranking may claim the right to settle where it wishes." His golden eyes met mine, and I saw both hope and shame in them. "We need high-level combatants, my lord. More than we have. More than we have ever had."
Beside me, Sally let out a slow breath. Mirael sat motionless, watching me with quiet attention. At my feet, the Void Fox lifted her head, and her four silver tails swayed once in the lantern light.
I thought of the Rainbow Empire, of my wives and their daughters, of the Infinity Group and the Diamond Guild. I thought of the vast network of allies I had spent years gathering across multiple worlds.
"When the competition opens," I said, "send word to me. I will see what I can do."
Veyran stared at me for a long moment. Then the ancient patriarch of the Silver-Moon Clan rose, pressed his fist to his chest, and bowed lower than he had at any point that day.
