Chapter 29 - Chapter 28: The Viper’s Price

The rain that had been threatening for days finally broke over Nagoya Castle, washing the stone ramparts with a heavy, relentless gray torrent.

Inside the private inner chambers of the main keep, the warmth of the charcoal brazier did nothing to dispel the suffocating frost that had settled over the Oda household.

Lady Kichō sat motionless on the raised tatami dais.

For the past twelve hours, she had not touched her tea, nor had she adjusted the lay of her fine silk robes.

Her hands, usually so steady and precise, were clamped tightly around the wooden sheath of her father's coiled viper blade.

Her sharp 92 INT—which had always been her greatest weapon—was currently a prison of her own making, replaying the sequence of the Yamaguchi exchange over and over again in a loop of icy logic.

[PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE DIAGNOSIS]

CHARACTER: LADY KICHŌ (DAUGHTER OF THE VIPER)

STATE: SEVERE INTERNAL GUILT / STRATEGIC COLDNESS

ANALYSIS: Evaluates the fall of Narumi Castle as a direct consequence of her emotional

escalation during the Yamaguchi interrogation.

STRATEGIC WILL: Unyielding. Seeking absolute leverage to balance the family ledger.

I overplayed my hand, she thought, her breath hitching slightly in the empty room.

I allowed the rage of an insulted household to dictate the terms.

If I had not sent Noriyoshi's severed hand to Narumi...

if I had kept him whole as a political bargaining chip...

Noritsugu would not have panicked.

He would not have thrown the keys of the southern corridor into Taigen Sessai's lap out of pure, mad despair.

To a daughter of the Saito clan, a strategic error was worse than a sin; it was a humiliation.

Her father, Saito Dōsan, had raised her to be a viper—calculating, patient, and lethal only when the kill was guaranteed.

By allowing her fury to guide the blade, she had inadvertently handed the Imagawa their greatest strategic foothold inside Owari.

The shoji screen slid open with a soft, fluid motion.

Subaru Ryu stepped into the room, his indigo robes damp from the courtyard spray.

His system interface flickered faintly in the dim room, mapping her volatile emotional state with clinical precision.

"My Lady," Subaru said softly, keeping his distance to show respect.

"The council has concluded.

Lord Nobunaga is preparing the matchlock divisions for a direct strike on Muraki.

He does not blame you."

Kichō let out a short, bitter laugh, her eyes remaining fixed on the floorboards.

"Nobunaga's lack of blame is the heaviest burden, Subaru.

He looks at the map and sees an opportunity to fight.

I look at the map and see the blood of my mistake.

Narumi Castle is a dagger inside our ribs, and my pride was the hand that pushed it in."

She stood up, her movements sudden and rigid.

The vulnerability vanished from her face, replaced by a cold, terrifying determination that closely mirrored the old Viper of Mino.

"The Oda cannot fight a two-front war against Muraki and Narumi with our current numbers,"

Kichō stated, her voice turning to steel.

"Nobunaga refuses to play defensively, which means his back will be entirely exposed to the Narumi garrison when he marches south.

If my mistake opened that gate...

then my bloodline must close it."

Subaru's 91 INT instantly caught her trajectory.

"You are going to appeal to Mino."

"My father has already sealed his alliance with Nobunaga at the Shotoku-ji Temple," Kichō said, walking past Subaru toward the desk where a clean parchment lay.

"But that was an alliance of papers and future promises.

Today, I am asking him for iron.

I am asking him to deploy the Saito vanguard to hold the northern borders of Owari, allowing every single Oda soldier to march south without fear."

"Saito Dōsan does not give away his spears for free, Lady Kichō," Subaru warned gently, his modern gamer mind calculating the political price of such a transaction.

"If the Viper moves his army to save the Oda's back, Nobunaga will owe him a debt that cannot be paid in gold."

"I know," Kichō whispered, dipping her brush into the black ink.

"But a dragon who owes a debt is still a dragon.

A dead fool is nothing but dust.

I will write the letter."

Three days later, beneath the heavy mist of the Mino-Owari border, a heavily armored contingent of one thousand elite vanguard troops from the Saito clan crossed the Kiso River.

They did not carry the cross-banners of the Oda; their shields and sashimono flags bore the stylized wave crest of the Saito.

At the front of this relief force rode Inaba Ittetsu, one of the formidable "Mino Triumvirate," alongside a personal diplomatic envoy from Inabayama Castle.

They marched with the disciplined, unhurried cadence of professional killers, positioning themselves squarely along the northern roads of Owari, effectively sealing the province's upper flank.

Inside the grand council hall of Nagoya Castle, the diplomatic envoy knelt before Oda Nobunaga. Subaru Ryu stood to the left of the dais, his system actively updating the shifting balance of power in the central region.

[REGIONAL EXPEDITIONARY DEPLOYMENT]

ALLIED FORCE: 1,000 MINO SAMURAI (SAITO CLAN VANGUARD)

MISSION: Northern Defensive Anchor (Countering potential Narumi or Mikawa flanking maneuvers)

EFFECT: Oda Combat Readiness for Muraki Expedition increased to 100%

POLITICAL DEBT STATUS: ODA NOBUNAGA —> SAITO DŌSAN [MAXIMUM LEVERAGE]

The envoy presented a long, heavy scroll wrapped in purple silk—the personal response of the Viper to his son-in-law.

"Lord Nobunaga," the envoy announced, his voice echoing off the high timber walls.

"My master, Lord Dōsan, sends his thousand spears to guard your home.

He bids me tell you that a father should always ensure his daughter's roof does not collapse during a storm."

Nobunaga sat on his high cushion, dressed in a simple dark robe, his hands resting on his knees.

He didn't look at the scroll; his sharp, piercing gaze was locked onto the northern horizon visible through the open doors.

The arrogance that usually defined his posture was gone, replaced by a heavy, profound stillness.

He knew exactly what this meant.

In the ruthless theater of the Sengoku Jidai, receiving military aid to fix an internal blunder was a massive political vulnerability.

Saito Dōsan hadn't sent these men out of pure paternal love; he had sent them to anchor his hook deeper into the future master of Owari.

"Your master is generous," Nobunaga said, his voice flat, completely masking the wild fire that usually burned within him.

"Tell the Viper that I accept his spears.

The Saito vanguard will take command of the northern garrisons immediately."

The envoy bowed deeply.

"My master also sends a personal message for your ears alone, Lord Oda.

He says: 'The iron wave must roll south without hesitation.

I have covered your back today, my son.

Do not make me regret investing my blood into a dragon who cannot clean his own stable.'"

As the envoy departed, the heavy silence returned to the hall.

Niwa Nagahide and Sassa Nagamasa looked at the floor, the weight of the political debt pressing down on the entire clan's pride.

To be protected by their father-in-law's army was a bitter pill for the fierce samurai of Owari to swallow.

Nobunaga stood up slowly, stepping down from the dais. He walked past his commanders and stopped right in front of Subaru Ryu.

"He has me by the throat, Ryu," Nobunaga murmured, so low that only Subaru could hear.

His eyes were dark, a complex storm of frustration and intense, cold calculation.

"The old man has paid for my freedom of movement with his own coin.

If I fail at Muraki now...

I do not just lose Owari.

I become a permanent vassal to the Saito clan."

"The Viper is a businessman, My Lord," Subaru replied, his 84 POL evaluating the structural reality.

"He saw our vulnerability and turned it into his ultimate leverage.

But he also gave us exactly what we needed to survive Taigen Sessai's pincer.

With the Mino vanguard holding the north, Narumi Castle is isolated.

They cannot launch a coordinated counter-attack against Nagoya without hitting Dōsan's iron wall first."

Nobunaga's hand drifted to his sword hilt, his fingers tightening until the wood creaked.

He looked back toward the inner chambers, where Kichō was undoubtedly watching from behind the screens.

"Kichō did what a daughter of Mino must do," Nobunaga said, his lips tightening into a hard, definitive line.

"She bought my victory with her family's blood.

I owe the Viper my back...

but I will pay him back by giving him a world he cannot even imagine."

He turned back to the map table, his aura flaring with that sudden, unpredictable energy that made him the most dangerous man in Japan.

He slammed his fist down onto the marker of Fort Muraki.

"No more delays, Ryu!

The ledger is sealed!

The north is locked by the serpent, and the south is waiting for our fire!

Tell the troops to move at midnight!

We are marching straight into the monk's throat!"

Subaru bowed deeply, his system interface flashing a brilliant, definitive blue as the countdown to the battle of Muraki Castle officially reached zero.

The debt had been accepted, the board had been stabilized by a terrifying price, and the iron wave of Owari was finally ready to break across the southeastern coast.
