Chapter 30 - Chapter 29: The Sovereign’s Currency

The rain that had shielded the mobilization of the Oda vanguard began to thin into a biting, translucent mist as the army moved closer to the borders of the Chita Peninsula.

Inside the fortified command pavilion erected within a dense cedar grove ten miles north of the coast, the air was cold and heavy with the smell of wet charcoal.

Subaru Ryu stood before the tactical map, his fingers adjusting the wooden tokens.

The entry of Saito Dōsan's one thousand vanguard samurai into northern Owari had successfully neutralized the threat of the Narumi defection, but the southern vanguard of the Imagawa at Fort Muraki remained an aggressive, deeply dug-in problem.

A quiet rustle at the entrance of the pavilion drew his attention.

Matsudaira Takechiyo—the young hostage of the Oda clan who would one day be known to history as Tokugawa Ieyasu—stepped into the light.

Though only a youth, his posture carried a steady, unyielding resilience that his current system metrics reflected perfectly.

"Lord Subaru," Takechiyo spoke, his voice surprisingly deep for his age, his eyes clear and entirely devoid of the fear typical of a political hostage.

"You are looking for the key to unlock the Chita Peninsula.

You are looking at Muraki as a fortress that must be broken by force.

But you are ignoring the gatekeeper who holds the keys to the eastern marshes."

Subaru turned, his 91 INT instantly shifting focus.

"You speak of Kariya Castle, Takechiyo.

You speak of the Mizuno clan."

"Yes," Takechiyo nodded, stepping closer to the map table and pointing a small, steady finger at a strategically vital coastal fortress positioned right between the Imagawa vanguard and the Mikawa border.

"My uncle, Mizuno Nobumoto.

The master of Kariya."

Subaru waved his hand, commanding the system to pull up the geopolitical profile of the lord in question.

The blue light flickered, scanning the historical data of the region to generate a precise tactical readout.

[TARGET ANALYSIS: MIZUNO NOBUMOTO]

STATUS: Lord of Kariya Castle (Chita Peninsula Buffer State)

KINSHIP: Uncle to Matsudaira Takechiyo (Brother of Odai no Kata)

LEADERSHIP (LEAD) : 74

ATTACK (ATK) : 68

DEFENSE (DEF) : 72

INTELLECT (INT) : 85 [Pragmatic / Opportunistic]

POLITICS (POL) : 81 [Neutrality Merchant] [FACTION RELATIONSHIP MATRIX]

ODA CLAN : Neutral / Cautious (Watching the Kiyosu integration)

IMAGAWA CLAN : Nominally Submissive (Choked by Taigen Sessai's presence)

MATSUDAIRA : Deep Blood Bond (Desires to see Mikawa liberated from Suruga control)

"Mizuno Nobumoto is a man of pure calculus, Lord Subaru," Takechiyo explained, his 78 POL showing a mature understanding of his family's complex blood ties.

"He bows to the Imagawa only because their spears are currently longer.

But he hates them.

He hates how Taigen Sessai has reduced my home province of Mikawa into a vassal breeding ground for Imagawa ashigaru.

If you march blindly against Muraki, Nobumoto will be forced by his treaties to attack your flank.

But if you offer him the right currency...

he will turn his spears against the monk."

Before Subaru could answer, the heavy leather curtain of the tent snapped open.

Oda Nobunaga stepped inside, his crimson cloak dripping with rainwater, his presence instantly consuming the room's energy.

"What currency does a merchant of neutrality want, Takechiyo?" Nobunaga demanded, his eyes flashing with sharp interest as he looked at the young Matsudaira heir.

"I have spent my gold on the Nagoya free markets and my prestige on the Viper's spears.

What does your uncle demand to betray Suruga?"

Takechiyo fell to his knees, bowing his head deeply to the dirt, but his voice remained entirely steady. "He wants me, Lord Nobunaga.

He wants the Matsudaira bloodline returned to Mikawa."

The silence inside the pavilion became absolute, broken only by the steady patter of rain against the heavy canvas roof.

"You ask me to release my greatest leverage over Mikawa?" Nobunaga muttered, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low rumble.

"As long as you are in Nagoya, the samurai of Mikawa hesitate to push too deep into my borders. You are the chain that holds your father's old retainers in check."

"I am a chain that restrains them, yes," Takechiyo countered, raising his head to look directly into Nobunaga's terrifying gaze.

"But if I am returned to my clan through the mediation of the Mizuno, I stop being a chain.

I become a wedge.

The Mikawa samurai do not want to fight for the Imagawa; they are forced to do so because Lord Yoshimoto holds our lands.

If my uncle Nobumoto can show his people that the Matsudaira heir is free,

the loyalty of the Mikawa vanguard inside Fort Muraki will shatter from within."

Subaru Ryu's 91 INT ran the computational simulation of Takechiyo's proposal.

The logic was mathematically beautiful.

It was an asymmetrical move that completely mirrored the type of high-level strategy that could bypass a traditional military meat-grinder.

[STRATEGIC SIMULATION: THE MATSUDAIRA WEDGE]

PROPOSAL: Release Takechiyo to Mizuno Nobumoto in exchange for an active alliance.

MILITARY IMPACT: Mizuno clan launches a surprise flank assault on Fort Muraki (-30% Defense).

GEOPOLITICAL SHIFT: Starts the slow, systemic decoupling of Mikawa from the Imagawa sphere.

"He is right, My Lord," Subaru stepped forward, his voice calm, structural, and persuasive.

"Mizuno Nobumoto's is high in intelligence means he will never jump from a safe ship into a stormy sea.

He needs a grand justification to break his treaties with Taigen Sessai.

By returning Takechiyo to him, we aren't losing a hostage; we are investing a political catalyst directly into the enemy's foundation."

Nobunaga paced around the table, his fingers tapping against the hilt of his sword.

He looked at Takechiyo, then at Subaru, his mind processing the immense macro-board of Japan.

He didn't see Takechiyo as a boy; he saw him as a living piece of currency that could buy the destruction of the Imagawa vanguard.

"You have a dangerous tongue for a child, Takechiyo," Nobunaga said, a slow, terrifying smile spreading across his face.

"Very well. Ryu, prepare the diplomatic protocol.

We will meet the Master of Kariya at the border neutral zone before the dawn."

A few hours before dawn, beneath a canopy of thick fog at the edge of the Sakai river marshes, the two delegations met.

Mizuno Nobumoto sat upon a simple camp stool, surrounded by fifty heavily armed bodyguards carrying longbows and heavy iron-plated shields.

His face was weathered, his sharp eyes instantly locking onto Subaru Ryu and Oda Nobunaga as they approached with a minimal escort.

"You ride hard through the mud, Lord of Owari," Nobumoto said, his voice carrying the rough, practical edge of a border warlord.

He glanced down at Takechiyo, who stood silently behind Subaru, his small hands clasped inside his sleeves.

"I see you brought my sister's blood with you."

"I do not have time for the poetry of the court, Nobumoto," Nobunaga stated, remaining mounted on his horse, looking down at the Mizuno lord with an unshakeable, natural arrogance.

"My strategist says you want to trade.

Speak your terms before the sun rises and my matchlocks begin to talk."

Nobumoto let out a dry chuckle, his 81 POL admiring the sheer audacity of the young Oda leader.

He stood up, stepping to the edge of the dry grass.

"The terms are simple, Nobunaga," Nobumoto declared, pointing his fan toward the south where the fires of Fort Muraki flickered in the distance.

"Taigen Sessai has placed twenty-five hundred men at Muraki.

He has demanded that I supply them with five hundred bushels of rice by tomorrow noon.

If I refuse, his vanguard will march through my crops.

If I comply, I become his eternal servant."

He paused, his eyes narrowing as he looked at Takechiyo.

"Give the boy to me.

The Matsudaira clan needs their anchor.

The moment Takechiyo steps inside the gates of Kariya Castle as a free lord, my five hundred ashigaru will not deliver rice to Muraki.

They will deliver fire.

We will launch a surprise assault on their eastern water-gate at the exact moment your main force hits their northern palisades."

Subaru stepped forward, his voice cutting through the damp fog with absolute clarity.

"And what guarantees that you will not simply hand Takechiyo to the Imagawa to buy a higher rank in Sunpu, Lord Mizuno?"

Nobumoto's gaze snapped to Subaru, evaluating the young strategist with a deep, newfound respect.

"Because, Outlaw Mathematician, I know that if the Imagawa take Owari, Kariya Castle is the next room they will clean.

I would rather owe a debt to a wild tiger like Nobunaga than be slowly digested by an old monk like Sessai.

My bloodline stays with the living."

[DIPLOMATIC NEGOTIATION CONCLUDED]

[TRANSACTION: MATSUDAIRA TAKECHIYO RELEASED TO MIZUNO CLAN]

[ALLIANCE SECURED: MIZUNO ACTIVE MILITARY INTERVENTION ACTIVATED]

[FORT MURAKI SURPRISE FACTOR: INCREASED BY 45%]

Nobunaga looked down at Takechiyo.

The young boy stepped forward, bowed deeply to Nobunaga one last time, and then walked across the gray mud of the marsh, stepping firmly into the circle of the Mizuno bodyguards.

There were no tears, no dramatic goodbyes—only the silent, cold understanding of two future rulers trading pieces to rewrite the destiny of their land.

"Do not die at the walls, Nobunaga," Nobumoto said, gripping Takechiyo's shoulder as his men began to fall back into the fog toward Kariya Castle.

"The eastern gate will open for you at tomorrow's dawn."

As the Mizuno delegation vanished into the white mist, Nobunaga spurred his horse around, his face illuminated by the first faint, golden cracks of the morning sky.

The final piece of the southern puzzle had been locked into place.

"The boy has escaped his cage, Ryu," Nobunaga shouted over the rising wind, his aura flaring with an absolute, terrifying readiness for war.

"Now... let us go and shatter the monk's toy!"
