Chapter 137 - Vigilantes 10

With that kind of thinking in mind, the aim of the following actions became quite clear.

They were vigilantes.

They were not heroes, but they were not villains either.

They were something in between the two.

They had their own way of doing things that could often be considered to be less heroic.

Some of their actions would likely fall into the grey areas or even black in terms of morality, ethics and the law.

That was their own way of carrying out their own sense of justice and their beliefs in how they should act as heroes.

Not all heroes fully believed in heroism and selflessness, especially when fame and fortune were involved.

Just as heroes despised vigilantes for the way they dealt out their own brand of justice, vigilantes could despise the heroes for their own differences and beliefs.

Heroes would see vigilantes as chaotic influences that were putting themselves and others in more danger.

Vigilantes would see heroes as fakes who were just putting on a show for the cameras and the crowds of people that gathered to watch them.

If a vigilante took things too far, then it could become quite possible that they would soon become known as a villain, so they needed to be careful not to cross certain lines.

If they did cross those fine lines, then it was only a matter of time before they would not only be enemies of the villains, but they would also become the enemies of so many heroes.

Both sides would likely become a problem for them, resulting in them having a much more difficult time carrying out their regular vigilante duties and being able to survive when so many were actively trying to catch them to put them behind bars or to end their lives.

The very same gas was released in the room aimed right at the victim.

The same effects began to take effect right away, resulting in them falling to their knees, clutching their face.

An intense stench was overpowering, along with the stinging of their eyes that caused them to water.

It was difficult enough to handle for the more hardened thugs, so an ordinary and weak person would not be able to do any better in that same situation, even if the room was not completely blocked off to contain all of it.

The effects were still more than enough to be effective enough to incapacitate them and to leave them in a state like the others.

Perhaps they would end up resenting each of the four vigilantes who tried to save them, but it was still better than the alternative.

Gasser took one final quick look back as his eyes showed a brief look of hesitation.

Sadness was seen in his eyes for a moment that was mixed with both disappointment and helplessness.

The situation was far from being ideal.

It was not something that he wished to do, but it was the only way that would perhaps help to reduce what could happen to such a person in the present circumstances.

He would have to do something slightly villainous to them, even if it resulted in him being hated by them, if it would help to alleviate whatever could happen to them once they were gone and unable to intervene in such matters.

Gasser ran toward the door and stopped for a second as he peeked out.

He could see the other three members of the group standing around the building as they were checking their surroundings.

They turned to see him, followed by Springer, stating in a hurry. "That path looks secure, but I will need to get a better look from a vantage point. I will try to watch over and guide you guys out of here."

With the threat incoming, they had to be extra careful, especially when they were within enemy territory.

There was no telling what the enemy had in store for them.

Anyone could be an enemy who could strike at them at any given moment.

Even someone they could least expect could end up being the person who would attack them when their guard had been lowered.

It could be possible that they were already surrounded, or they were in the process of being surrounded, as they would have all escape routes cut off.

The words of Springer started to sound like the right way to go about how they should proceed moving forward.

Having an eye in a higher place would be helpful in so many ways, especially when it came to navigating through the surrounding streets and back alleyways.

They moved to a closed-off back alleyway that was very close by, where the fire escape was located on the sides or back of the buildings.

Springer jumped off the walls, allowing him to reach higher and get himself to higher ground. "Get moving, guys."

Those left below nodded in response and started running up the alleyway, which was empty.

There seemed to be no movement in the surroundings yet, so it did seem like the backup had yet to get close to their location.
