The academy's alarms shrieked through the halls as students sprinted toward the fortified safe wards that were only activated if all else failed, guided by flashing glyphs and panicked professors.
But Max, Victoria, and Alex were running the wrong way.
Because Adam led them down the abandoned halls.
Past locked classrooms sealed with dust and spell chains.
Past murals half erased by time.
Straight into the forbidden wing where no student was ever meant to walk. It was always guarded by magic the headmaster himself set up.
Max had never been here before, the walls were carved with runes older than any script taught in the academy some glowing weakly, others cracked and silent.
Every tremor shaking the building made those runes dim more and more.
Something ancient was stirring.
Something the academy feared.
Victoria kept her palm raised, blue flames swirling in her hand.
"Explain why we're following you," she snapped.
Adam didn't stop walking. Didn't even turn his head.
"Because the path you're seeking is sealed behind the headmasters magic," he said smoothly. "And I can get you through it."
"How?" Victoria demanded.
Only then did Adam stop.
He turned toward them slowly before his skin loosened. His form rippled, bones shifting with faint organic pops and cracks.
Until he wasn't Adam anymore.
His hair shortened. His posture straightened. His eyes sharpened. His robe darkened into ceremonial black. His voice deepened into the precise calm cadence they all knew.
He looked exactly like Headmaster Zephyr.
Alex's scream echoed down the stone corridor. "MONSTER HELP HELP."
Victoria recoiled, magic flaring so fast the air hissed.
"What—WHAT ARE YOU!?"
The shapeshifted Zephyr spoke but in Adam's voice now.
"A gift from the higher realm," he said mildly. "Limited, but effective magic indeed."
Victoria surged forward and slammed him against the wall so hard the runes behind him flickered. A blade of condensed blue flame appeared at his throat.
"Lie to us again," she hissed, "and I will burn you alive atom by atom."
Adam didn't even blink.
"You won't," he said calmly. "Because you need me."
Victoria pressed the blade harder just enough that his disguise flickered but Adam's expression didn't change.
"You rely on fear," he said softly. "In my realm, we rely on strength. I've watched you since day one. You've got nothing for me to fear."
"Give me one reason not to cut your throat."
Adam shifted back to his original form smoothly, effortlessly. His eyes met hers without challenge, but with certainty.
"Because," he said, "I'm the only one who knows where Raven's original resting place is."
Everything stopped.
Even the alarms seemed quieter.
Max's stomach dropped.
"Raven… how much do you know?"
Adam looked onwards.
"The portal you're heading for it's her origin point. Her prison. That YOU released her from."
Victoria slowly lowered the blade but she did not put it away.
Alex whispered, "This is a terrible idea."
He was right.
But Adam was already walking deeper into the forbidden wing.
"Come," he said without looking back. "Time is almost gone."
They followed.
The deeper they went, the less the wing felt like part of the academy. The floors shifted from marble to obsidian perfectly smooth, reflecting their steps like dark water. Floating lavender flames drifted overhead, flickering without heat or smoke.
Alex shivered.
"I feel sick," he muttered, hugging himself.
"It's because this place wasn't built for humans," Adam replied. "We're nearing the dimensional fault line."
Another quake shook the corridor dust falling, runes flaring violently. Somewhere beneath them, the academy groaned like a wounded beast.
Something enormous was waking below.
Raven's warning echoed through Max's memory:
It's waking.
Adam stopped at a massive runic slab embedded in the obsidian wall. It pulsed faintly like something behind it was breathing.
"This," Adam said quietly, "is the descent route to the portal."
Victoria crossed her arms.
"How do we open it?"
Adam stepped aside and pointed at Max.
"He does."
Max blinked.
"Me?"
"Raven," Adam said, voice steady. "She's the key. She always was. And you carry her energy inside you and on that weapon you carry around.
Before Max could respond before Victoria could stop him the weapon on Max's back pulsed.
Not gently.
Violently.
He staggered forward as a whisper curled into his mind like velvet smoke.
"Max…"
His head snapped upward
And there she was.
Raven.
No flicker. No haze.
Solid enough that her form cast a faint, wavering shadow though her edges shimmered like cosmic stardust unraveling into reality.
Victoria inhaled sharply. Alex stumbled backward. Adam simply watched, eyes calculating.
Max's chest tightened.
"Raven… you came back."
Her violet eyes were fixed on him.
"Max," she said softly. "We have to leave the academy."
"Leave?" Max whispered. "Now?"
Raven nodded once.
"The seal has weakened. The portal is opening. And the thing beneath this place is stirring."
Her gaze shifted past him—toward the slab toward something deeper.
"If we don't reach the portal first…"
A tremor rattled the corridor.
"…this dimension will collapse and the creature waking below will consume everything."
Silence stretched—thick, suffocating.
Then she reached her hand out close enough to touch, but not touching.
"Max," Raven said, voice soft as falling ash.
"It's time to go home."
