Chapter 27 - Chapter 27 Detainment

"This is boring..."

Sat amongst a pile of decaying grimm was Mordred. She had begun her training again by throwing herself into hordes of grimm.

Unfortunately, grimm were no longer good sources of training as she had become too strong for ordinary grimm, even in hordes.

But fortunately, she discovered a new training method for herself, though it is quite extreme.

Mana tempering. Deliberately overloading her body with mana to force growth. Was it efficient? Probably not. Was it painful? Definitely, she ended up crying the first few times from the sheer pain.

But the benefits were undeniable. Many of her stats were increasing just from this. Strength, Endurance, and Mana had gone up to C rank.

Mana Core and Mana Burst were now C+.

And Magic Resistance was C rank.

It was a small amount of growth, but it was still exciting to see. So, she went out and found a horde of alpha grimm to see the difference in her current strength compared to before she started training, and the result was complete destruction for the grimm. She didn't even use Clarent or Incursio, her fists were more than enough to one-shot kill grimm with ease. Sometimes she didn't even need to touch them, just flaring her Mana Burst was enough to turn any nearby grimm into ashes.

This might not seem like much since she could easily kill grimm before, but for Mordred, she clearly felt how much stronger she was now.

A month of nonstop training was good, though the effects of Mana Tempering would decrease the stronger she got, that's if she continued using the current level of mana output. Once she felt that the pain had decreased, that was the signal to increase the amount of mana.

If she feels pain, then it means she is growing.

She stepped off the pile of dead grimm and looked at the system panel in front of her.

'Another daily quest done. 10 points and a gacha token.'

10 points wasn't much in the store, so the token was the main reward, since she didn't need to spend points to get it. And doing daily quests everyday for the past month, she had gotten 30 of these tokens. Mordred planned to save up to at least a hundred before doing the gacha again.

~Ring~

And just as she was about to head back home, her scroll started ringing.

Taking her scroll out of her pocket, she saw the caller ID, Ruby Rose.

'Why is she calling me?'

Mordred quickly checked the current date.

'She shouldn't be at work today. Did she sneak back into work? No, Akashi would have said something, and if that was the case, why would she call me? If it was work related, she should call Violet or Slate.'

Curious, she answered the call.

"Boss! I need help!" Her voice was loud through the scroll.

"Did you sneak back into work again?"

"What? Oh no, of course I didn't! I'm calling for something else!"

Mordred felt a headache coming but she still pushed forward. "So, what is it?"

"I- umm...may have gotten detained by the police..."

"..."

"..."

"I'm hanging up."

"NO! Please don't! You have to help me!"

"Call your family to help you! Why are you even calling me?! I'm your employer! Not your guardian!"

"Because if I call my dad, he'll drag me back home and won't let me leave Patch until I enroll in Beacon! And if I call my sister, she'll just tell my dad anyway!"

Mordred stood and began thinking. While she didn't want to bother with this, she also didn't want to risk losing a capable employee like Ruby. So, with a heavy sigh, she decided to help.

"Alright, send me the address, I'll head over."

"You're the best boss!"

...

"I hope you realize your actions tonight will not be taken lightly young lady."

Inside an interrogation room, Ruby sat under the single source of light in the room, clutching her scroll, waiting for her savior to arrive. While the blonde-haired huntress, Glenda Goodwitch continued to lecture her.

"You put yourself and others in great danger."

"But they started it! They tried to rob me!"

Ignoring her words, the huntress continued. "If it were up to me, you'd be sent home, with a pat on the back..."

Ruby eyes lit up.

"And a slap on the wrist." Slapping her crop down near Ruby's hand, making her sink back into her chair.

"But... there is someone here who would like to meet you."

From the door, a gray-haired man entered the room. In one hand, a plate of cookies, in the other, a cup of coffee.

He walked up to the table and leaned down, staring into Ruby's eyes. "You... have silver eyes?"

"Umm..." Ruby's eyes darted away, confused by the man's actions. 'Is this guy a creep?'

And just as quickly he pulled away as Goodwitch held out a large scroll which played surveillance footage of Ruby combating the thugs.

"So, where did you learn to do this?" He gestured to the footage.

"S-Signal Academy."

"They taught you to use one of the most dangerous weapons ever designed?"

"Well, one teacher in particular."

"I see..." The man placed the plate of cookies in front of Ruby, who hesitantly ate one, before devouring it all with five seconds. If Mordred were here, she would be slightly impressed, only slightly given that she could do it within less than a second.

"It's just that I've only seen one other scythe-wielder of that skill before. A dusty, old crow."

"Oh! That's my uncle Qrow! He's a teacher at Signal. I was complete garbage before he took me under his wing. And now I'm all like-" Then proceeded to make strange noises as she did karate chops to show off her skill.

"So I've noticed." He placed his coffee down. "And what is a girl such as yourself, doing at a school designed to train warriors?"

"Well... I want to be a huntress."

"You want to slay monsters?"

"Yeah, I just need to finish up my training at Signal, then I'm going to apply to Beacon. You see my sister's starting there this year and she's trying to become a huntress, and I'm trying to become a huntress 'cause I wanna help people. My parents always taught us to help others, so I thought, hey I might as well make a career out of it! I mean the police are alright but huntsmen and huntresses are just so much more romantic and exciting! And then there's the weapons which are just really the best things ever you know!"

The room was silent, as both figures just looked at Ruby who was now starting to feel awkward.

"Do you know who I am?" The man broke the silence.

"You're professor Ozpin. You're the headmaster of Beacon."

Ozpin smiled, "do you want to come to my school?"

Ruby opened her mouth to speak before noise was heard on the other side of the door.

"It's this room here." A muffled voice said, before opening the door revealing a police officer who then stepped aside for the other two.

Mordred and the other was a female with golden blonde hair, similar to Mordred but much longer and shinier and... has a better figure... Aurelia Cross, Mordred's lawyer.

Aurelia Cross stepped into the interrogation room first, calm and composed, and carrying an aura of such poised authority that even the huntress straightened unconsciously, truly, lawyers are a terrifying bunch. Mordred followed behind her, hands in her pockets, her expression unreadable.

Ruby's face instantly brightened. "Boss! You ca—"

Mordred lifted her hand toward her lips and made a gesture, 'Stay quiet.'

Ruby froze mid-sentence, blinking rapidly.

Aurelia's eyes flicked toward Ruby, appraising her quietly before turning to the adults in the room.

"Good evening," she said smoothly. "My name is Aurelia Cross. I am here as legal counsel for Miss Ruby Rose."

Goodwitch frowned. "We were not informed she had counsel."

"You are now," Aurelia replied pleasantly.

Ruby mouthed silently toward Mordred, 'Legal counsel?'

Mordred remained silent.

Ozpin began speaking politely. "Miss Cross, I believe there has been a misunderstanding. Miss Rose—"

Aurelia raised one finger delicately, and somehow it was enough to make even Ozpin pause.

"Before anything else," she said, "I need clarification on why a minor is currently sitting in an interrogation room without a guardian present."

Ruby shrank slightly, suddenly realizing how the situation must look from the outside.

Goodwitch answered. "She was involved in a confrontation with known criminal Roman Torchwick. We detained her for questioning regarding the events."

"She defended herself," Aurelia replied evenly. "Against armed aggressors, in a situation where she was the victim. Detainment was unnecessary."

Ozpin sipped his coffee, watching the exchange with quiet interest.

Aurelia continued, voice firm but perfectly polite. "I am not here to argue your procedures. I am here for one thing only: Miss Rose's release from detainment and assurance that she is not under any form of suspicion or threat of charges."

Ruby's eyes widened. 'She sounds so cool…' To see someone pressure a huntress and even speak back to the headmaster of Beacon.

Goodwitch opened her mouth, but Ozpin gently placed a hand on her arm.

"Miss Cross," he said, "I can assure you that Miss Rose is not in trouble. In fact, we are quite impressed with her. Our intention is not punitive."

"Then there is no reason for her to remain here." Aurelia folded her hands neatly. "Release her. Then, if you wish to discuss her… future, we may do so in a more appropriate setting."

Ozpin's smile grew. "Of course. That is reasonable."

Ozpin gestured to the door. "If you and Miss—" he glanced to Mordred, curious "—your… associate, would join us in the office, I would like to make Miss Rose an offer."

Aurelia nodded. "Once she is officially released. Paperwork first."

Goodwitch hurried to finalize the brief formalities, and only once Ruby's status was cleared did Aurelia place a reassuring hand on the girl's shoulder.

"You're free to go, Ruby."

Ruby practically bounced out of the chair, relieved.

Aurelia turned to Ozpin. "Now, Headmaster. You may continue your conversation with Miss Rose."

"Excellent. Then let us discuss Miss Rose's future at Beacon."

Ruby froze mid-step, eyes widening.

Mordred followed behind Ruby as they left the room. 'So, it's finally here, the first episode of RWBY. Took awhile of waiting, but it seems things still played out the same.'

She glanced over at Ozpin. 'Sorry old wizard, but I'd be damned if I let you poach my talents! I found her first!'

Ozpin too glanced over at Mordred. 'So, this is Mordred Pendragon?'

...

[A/N] Yoo I just realized I never gave a name to Mordred's company, lol. I'll figure something out before we set off to the next world.
