"There he is," she said.
He beat the wing once. The gust put out the lamp and threw sand against the walls like rain. In the same heartbeat he whipped the tail over his shoulder, straight at the mug, faster than anything he had done all night.
There was a smack.
The tail stopped.
Alex looked back along it in the dark.
Selina had turned her shoulder into the wind, so the mug was behind her body. Her right hand was wrapped around the end of his tail, just under the point.
"Huh," she said. "It's warm."
"Let go."
"No."
She lifted.
It turned out that when somebody picks you up by the tail, the rest of you has to follow. He went up, and over, and then he was hanging upside down from her fist with his wing flopped on the floor and his hair in the sand.
'This is fine,' he thought. 'This is a completely normal thing that is happening to me.'
'Hehehehe.'
'LUNA.'
'I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Lexie. You look like a bat.'
