Chapter 9 - Sarafyna II

Yna's pov

It was time to put my plan into motion. Admittedly, there were a few loose ends to tie up. First clear my desk and hopefully any misunderstandings with Christean.

But first, I needed to track Elena down. She was the closest I could think of as a friend. But now was not the time to be picky. She would have to do for the plan I had in mind.

And she was not an easy one to track down. From what I'd gathered so

Time to use money for some worthy causes. I called Amani Vidal. He was the established king of Pharmaceuticals. And also, the King of the streets. As the highest all-time donor to charities, he was everywhere, knew everyone and everything.

Good thing he's also my fanboy.

A story for later.

Reaching out for my phone, I went through my contact list looking for his. If this was a bookshelf, the contacts would have collected dust after all this time.

Once I found it, I dialed it and waited patiently to hear that seductive drawl of his

"Hi Fynn baby, I was starting to think that you'd forgotten me"

I chuckled

"As my dedicated fanboy, you know you're unforgettable"

"Ah, there she is…my siren. Tell me love, to what do I owe this pleasure of a call from the shadows?"

"I have a request Amani"

"Sure love, anything for you"

"I need an invitation to your next gala and of course Elena needs to be there"

"Ah, that is certainly something we should have discussed over dinner"

I snorted lightly at that.

"As much as I would love that, I am on a tight schedule"

"Right, but you can always make time for me if you really need this favor", he said

I could almost feel the sass in his voice.

"Ok, get me that ticket and I'll promise you dinner"

"Done"

And just like that. The call ended.

I took a deep breath, feeling disgusted at the games rich people play on a daily. The loops and hoops to get whatever they wanted. Now I am a player in this game, moving pieces the way I deemed fit and selfishly getting my wants satiated.

What a horrible way to live! I thought.

2hours later. I stared at the virtual ticket on my phone. It was for a gala next week. And obviously high-profile.

Amani kept his word and it was time to keep mine.

I immediately sent a quick text.

"Dinner tomorrow? 7"

"It's a date!"

And just like that I slumped into my bed. There were still a few appointments to be made. My lasik and finding a new place. One of the only good things about this engagement was finally getting my own place.

Obviously for days when Serial wanted to stay over or have private time with me.

Not my idea.

But it worked perfectly for my need for independence. And I was absolutely going to take advantage of it.

Heaving deeply, I browsed for a nice little place close to work. Now that I was resigning as a secretary, I was taking over a more important role. Although, I'm still not sure what exactly it would be.

But of course, Serial Lockheart cannot be engaged to a mere secretary. Not when she was an heiress of the Yuriats. My thoughts kept circling around what life would look like for the next 4months while I played this fiancée game. I must have been exhausted because I fell asleep.

Next day, I called into work. Told Christean I had taken a few days off because I'd caught a stomach bug. He sounded relieved because he had not seen or heard from me in 8days.

"Are you sure you'll be ok on your own? I can pass by and get you some medication after work.

"Thank you but I wouldn't want to burden you with that. Besides, I have some stuff I grabbed from the pharmacy yesterday. If it doesn't get better, I promise to call you first", I said.

If only he knew that I was getting married, I thought.

There was a sudden wave of embarrassment as I remembered the Lockheart kiss.

A kiss with a man I barely saw. My first kiss.

"So I presume you'll be coming in a couple of days? Hopefully you get better soon. The workplace has been crazy without you. The deal with the Lockhearts might pull through so we've been working around the clock. Doesn't help that we're missing a crucial arm right now"

I sniffed a little. Feeling very sad.

"I know, I was actually calling about that. Maybe I can come pick up the files I need to work on. And get them done from home?"

It was almost funny that I was asking for permission to do this. But techno he was my boss. The irony. Anyways, all that mattered was me finishing that up and clearing my desk so I can resign as Yna Naledi. Only then can I emerge as Sarafyna Yuriat.

I sighed a little at that.

"Absolutely, do you want maybe come at lunch time? I can get all those files together"

"That's so helpful Christean. Thank you. I do think after hours would work best. I don't look great right now and I wouldn't want to waltz into work looking sickly"

"That's fine, I'm sure nobody would mind but whatever works for you. Just get some rest and don't think too much about work"

"Sure, thank you. I do need to take some medication and get some bed rest. I'll call you at 4, when you close from work"

"Sure, Yna. Take care"

Staring at the pair of contacts on the nightstand, the full weight of this decision crashed on me.

In a few days, I would be a whole new person, in circles I abhorred and in the midst of presence. The web of lies I was building repulsed me. It was necessary though. I needed it to survive this new life. Besides, I had started all this, and I was the only one who could end it.
