Valentine Teller squatted on the ground, intently peeling the lotus root.

His mind was a jumble of emotions, unable to answer Madison Barton's question.

She didn't know what to say; her lying skills had always been clumsy, and she didn't want to lie.

Madison Barton was frying black pepper steak, watching as the surface gradually cooked while the inside remained raw.

She stood there thinking that Valentine Teller and Mark Reed were just like this steak, inconsistent inside and out.

Clearly in love with each other, yet pretending to be indifferent.

The two of them, each with their own thoughts, remained silent for a long time. The black pepper steak, Italian pasta, vegetable salad, and borscht were set on the table.

Madison Barton wiped her hands and called out toward the study, "Mark, dinner is ready."

"Okay." Mark Reed put down the documents in his hands, though his eyes never left the papers, he wasn't truly reading them; his mind was on the two women in the kitchen.
