Chapter 895 - 894-Strategic Implications

The underground chamber was still, the air thick with the residue of chakra and the lingering heat of the flames that Renjiro had unleashed. Kushina stood beside him, her gaze fixed on the space where the phantom had dissipated, her expression carrying the weight of everything she had just witnessed. The right eye was far more dangerous than they had anticipated; its ability to consume chakra, to devour attacks, to turn enemy power into fuel, was almost terrifying in its implications.

Renjiro remained silent for a long moment, his new eyes still active, their pattern shifting slowly. He had proven that the right eye worked, but he had not yet tested the left. And the left eye, he knew, had far greater consequences.

"The right eye is powerful," he said quietly, his voice carrying the weight of his understanding. "But the left eye has far greater consequences."

Kushina turned to him, her expression shifting from curiosity to concern.

"What do you mean?" she asked.

"The right eye destroys chakra," Renjiro replied. "The left eye… changes people."

Renjiro explained his plan; he needed real people to properly test the left eye. He refused to experiment on civilians; he would not risk harming innocent people. Instead, he decided on the ANBU Oversight Station; an experienced shinobi, a controlled environment. He did not intend to activate the technique; he only wanted to place marks and see if experienced shinobi could sense them.

"I'm going to place marks on them," he said, his voice calm, analytical. "Invisible seals that they will not be able to detect. If I can place them on ANBU operatives without being noticed, then the ability is truly undetectable."

Kushina studied him for a long moment, her expression unreadable.

"You're going to experiment on ANBU operatives without their knowledge?" she asked, her voice carrying a note of disapproval.

"I'm going to test the limits of my ability," Renjiro replied. "I won't activate the marks. I won't harm them. I only need to know if they can detect the seals."

He paused, his expression carrying the weight of his decision.

"If I can place them on ANBU operatives without being noticed, then the ability is truly undetectable. And that knowledge is essential for understanding what I've become."

The ANBU Oversight Station was a hive of quiet professionalism; masked shinobi moved through the corridors, their footsteps silent, their eyes sharp. Mission reports were being processed, runners carrying sealed scrolls between departments, intelligence officers analysing data, and the quiet hum of organised chaos filled the air. Many ANBU recognised Renjiro; some saluted, others greeted him respectfully. He gave a believable excuse for his presence: "I'm looking for Kakashi." No one questioned it.

He began to move through the headquarters, his steps unhurried, his demeanour casual. As he walked, he initiated small interactions; a handshake, a shoulder tap, a brief greeting, handing someone a scroll, brushing past someone. Each interaction allowed Mirror of the Branded to silently construct its invisible Uzumaki seal. Nobody noticed.

The marks were invisible, their chakra signatures suppressed, their presence undetectable even to skilled sensors. They simply existed, dormant and waiting, embedded in the chakra networks of the ANBU operatives who had no idea they had been marked.

Renjiro recognised several familiar chakra signatures as he moved through the station. Some of them had fought beneath him; some of them had once trusted him with their lives during the last shinobi war. Each greeting carried history, and each interaction was an opportunity. He silently placed marks on them all; no guilt, no excitement, just pure experimentation.

Then he encountered a familiar chakra signature; he immediately recognised it as Shisui's. Their previous encounters made the signature unforgettable; the young Uchiha's chakra was distinctive, sharp, and alive with potential. Shisui greeted him politely, his voice carrying the respect that was due to the Jonin Commander.

"Renjiro-san," Shisui said, his tone warm. "It's good to see you. What brings you to the station?"

"Looking for Kakashi," Renjiro replied, his voice casual. "Have you seen him?"

"Not recently," Shisui said. "But I'm sure he'll turn up."

During the brief eye contact, the three-second tether completed. The seal burned itself invisibly into Shisui's chakra network; the young Uchiha noticed absolutely nothing, his expression unchanged, his posture relaxed. Renjiro quietly continued walking, leaving Shisui behind without a second glance.

Near the exit, Kakashi appeared. He had not been expecting Renjiro, and his visible eye widened slightly in surprise. They exchanged small conversation; simple, natural, unremarkable. Kakashi asked his question, his voice carrying a note of curiosity.

"Didn't you say you were looking for me?"

Renjiro's reply was calm, measured.

"I found what I needed."

A friendly shoulder tap, and the mark was placed. Renjiro left the station, his steps unhurried, his expression neutral. He had done what he came to do; the marks were in place, and the experiment could begin.

After Renjiro disappeared, Kakashi paused. He frowned, his hand moving unconsciously to his shoulder. Something felt off; nothing suspicious, nothing obvious, just instinct. His Sharingan eye scanned his surroundings, searching for anything unusual. He found nothing. After several seconds, he dismissed the feeling and returned to work.

Shisui had a similar experience. He stopped mid-report, his hand touching his nape. He looked around, his Sharingan activating briefly, scanning for threats. Something felt wrong; not pain, not chakra disruption, just the sense that someone had looked too deeply at him. He found nothing. He shook it off and continued working.

Neither of them had perceived the mark. Neither of them had detected the seal. The experiment had succeeded.

Renjiro returned to his office, locking the room and activating the barriers. He sat at his desk, closed his eyes, and began the true experiment. He did not trigger the genjutsu; he only activated the connection. The marks awakened.

The experience was unlike anything he had ever encountered. Not visual, not chakra sensing, something entirely different. Each mark became an anchor; through each anchor, he felt heartbeat, breathing, emotional state, adrenaline, fatigue, chakra level, approximate posture, and movement. Each person became a living sensory node, a point of awareness that extended his perception far beyond his physical body.

The marks began overlapping; he realised that he was not monitoring individuals; he was monitoring an entire network. One person walked, another turned, someone laughed, someone became anxious, someone drew a weapon during training. He experienced tiny pieces of all of them simultaneously, each sensation distinct and clear.

I'm not just sensing them, he realised, his internal voice carrying the weight of his understanding. I'm experiencing them. The marks don't transmit information; they extend my nervous system. Each seal functions like an additional sensory organ.

The military implications of the ability were staggering. If every squad leader carried this seal, he would know morale, casualties, battlefield positions, injuries, ambushes, panic, and retreats instantly. No messenger, no radio, no summons. A commander who literally felt his army. He would know the state of his forces in real-time, without any delay, without any loss of information.

His thinking expanded beyond Konoha, beyond ANBU. What if every operative carried one? Entire organisations, mercenary companies, international networks. Every member connected, every battlefield synchronised, absolute coordination.

His thoughts naturally drifted toward Akatsuki; small, elite, distributed, independent. Exactly the type of organization this ability would perfect. He could build his own network, or he could infiltrate theirs.

Should I simply build one? he wondered, his internal voice cold with calculation. Or take theirs?
