The office was still, the air thick with the residue of chakra and the lingering weight of the sensory web that Renjiro had just deactivated. He sat at his desk, his eyes closed, his breathing slow and steady. One by one, the mental threads disappeared; each mark he had placed on the ANBU operatives, each connection he had established, each point of awareness that had extended his perception far beyond his physical body, faded into silence. The room suddenly became unnaturally quiet after experiencing dozens of minds simultaneously.
He reflected on how addictive the omniscience could become if he relied on it constantly; the ability to feel the heartbeat, breathing, emotional state, and chakra level of every marked individual was intoxicating. He could have stayed in that state forever, drinking in the information, never truly alone. But he knew that such dependence would be dangerous; it would isolate him from the world, and eventually, he would lose the ability to connect with anyone who was not marked.
I need to be careful, he thought, his internal voice carrying the weight of his realisation. This power could consume me if I let it.
====
Shisui was still in the ANBU Oversight Station, reviewing a mission report, when he suddenly exhaled. The strange pressure that he had been feeling for the past hour had vanished. He paused, his hand touching his nape, and wondered why he suddenly felt lighter. He activated his Sharingan briefly, scanning his surroundings for anything unusual. He found absolutely nothing; no chakra residue, no foreign signatures, no signs of intrusion. He decided it must have been fatigue and returned to work, dismissing the sensation as a trick of his tired mind.
Renjiro sat quietly in his office, his thoughts turning to the next phase of his experiment. Observation told him nothing about activation. He already understood how to place marks and sense through them; now he needed to answer the dangerous question: could he actually control someone? He immediately rejected experimenting on allies; he would not risk harming people who trusted him. He needed someone whose death would already be justified, someone whose loss would not be mourned.
That led him to one destination: the Torture and Interrogation Department.
The T&I Department was a study in controlled unease; unlike ANBU headquarters, it was colder, darker, quieter. Heavy doors lined the corridors, each one reinforced with sealing barriers that pulsed with faint energy. Interrogation rooms were arranged in neat rows, their interiors soundproofed, their walls lined with seals that suppressed chakra and dampened sound. Guards stood at every intersection, their faces expressionless, their hands resting on their weapons. They rarely smiled.
Renjiro was recognised immediately; the staff saluted him respectfully, their voices carrying the particular deference that was due to the Jonin Commander. He acknowledged them with a nod and requested to speak with the department head.
Daigo Morita was a seasoned interrogation specialist in his late forties, with a scar across one cheek and a calm voice that had broken many prisoners. He was a veteran of multiple wars, and he trusted results over appearances. He greeted Renjiro with a slight surprise; the Jonin Commander was not known for visiting the T&I Department.
"Commander Uzumaki," Daigo said, his voice carrying the weight of years of experience. "What brings you here?"
"I understand you have a prisoner who has been refusing to speak," Renjiro replied.
Daigo nodded slowly.
"A high-ranking Iwagakure intelligence operative," he said. "Captured weeks ago. Still refuses to speak. Already survived interrogation, sleep deprivation, truth serums, and psychological pressure. Nothing worked."
"I'd like to try something," Renjiro said calmly.
Daigo looked confused; Renjiro was not known as an interrogator. He was a battlefield commander, a seal master, a leader of men. He had never shown interest in the dark art of extracting information.
"What method?" Daigo asked, his voice carrying a note of caution.
"A genjutsu I've been developing," Renjiro replied.
Daigo hesitated; then he agreed.
The prisoner was a study in defiance; broken physically, but not mentally. Still defiant, still loyal, still convinced that he could outlast Konoha. His body was covered in bruises, his eyes were sunken, and his posture was hunched, but his gaze was still sharp, still challenging. He laughed when Renjiro entered the room; he assumed this was another failed interrogation, another weak attempt to break his will.
"Another one?" he said, his voice rough with exhaustion. "You people never learn."
Renjiro did not respond; he stepped close, making eye contact, his new eyes meeting the prisoner's defiant gaze. The invisible mark formed in the brief moment of contact; the spy noticed nothing, his expression unchanged, his posture still defiant.
Mirror of the Branded.
Renjiro activated it immediately. The real interrogation room disappeared.
Inside the genjutsu, the spy experienced fragments of his own memories; regret, failure, dead comrades, family, past decisions. Every mistake replayed endlessly, each one more vivid than the last. The green sigil glowed across his chest, pulsing with each memory, and as the memories intensified, his chakra drained. Not painfully, but inevitably, like blood leaving the body. He could feel himself fading, his will crumbling, his resistance eroding.
Outside reality, the prisoner did not scream; instead, his breathing changed, his body trembled, sweat poured from his skin, and his chakra visibly collapsed. Medical sensors attached to his body began to flash warnings; his chakra reserves were dropping at impossible speed. Daigo had never seen anything like it.
"What is happening to him?" Daigo asked, his voice carrying the weight of genuine concern.
"He's reliving his deepest regrets," Renjiro replied calmly. "Every failure, every loss, every moment of weakness. He's experiencing them all simultaneously."
Eventually, the chakra reached zero. Renjiro immediately felt something; not power, not satisfaction, but a lock, like a seal clicking shut. He instantly understood that subjugation was available. The prisoner's eyes reopened, empty and waiting.
"Write," Renjiro commanded calmly.
The prisoner obeyed without hesitation, without resistance, against every instinct. He wrote cyphers, passwords, communication methods, dead drops, and code phrases. His hand moved across the paper with mechanical precision, each stroke deliberate, each word accurate.
The room was completely silent. No one spoke. The T&I staff slowly realised that this was not torture, not persuasion, not hypnosis; the prisoner's free will was simply gone. His mind had been erased, his personality overwritten, his identity consumed by the seal.
Daigo felt genuinely disturbed; he had interrogated people for decades, had seen every method imaginable, and nothing compared to this. The prisoner was broken, but not in any way that he recognised. He was simply empty.
"…How?" Daigo asked quietly, his voice carrying the weight of his unease.
"I've been developing a genjutsu," Renjiro replied, his voice calm, analytical, revealing nothing.
After the intelligence was verified, Renjiro made a decision. He could not release someone carrying this mark; the seal was too dangerous, too permanent. He activated Extinction. No dramatic explosion, no spectacle; the man's heart simply stopped. Instantly. Silently. He collapsed.
The room was still.
Renjiro watched quietly, his expression unreadable. He did not feel victorious; he felt responsible. One thought echoed through his mind: I've erased a person. That frightened him more than the power itself. He had taken a life, but more than that, he had taken a soul. He had erased everything that made the prisoner who he was.
I've erased a person, he thought, his internal voice carrying the weight of his realisation. And I will have to do it again in the future.
