Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 - Proper Introduction 2

===[Sky Screen]===

Rodya: "I think there's a... well, a good reason you became our manager. I'm sure you used to be a big shot back in the Nest, right? When your old habits start coming back, we'll be that much closer to rolling in the dough… Fuhu…"

… She sure is an extrovert, I'll give her that.

===[Line Break]===

Tang Dynasty

"It seems a 'Nest' refers to the places where the great clans reside, while 'The Backstreets' refers to where the Common People live," Emperor Taizong of Tang analyzed.

"And looking at the introduction in the title, that Heathcliff who appeared earlier should be from The Backstreets, just like her."

"As for her flaws, as the ancients said: 'Vile rivers and mountains breed unruly people.'" (T/N: Bad places creates bad people basically)

Spring and Autumn Period

"Even if one is of common birth, they should at least understand some propriety," Confucius shook his head at Rodion's overly familiar behavior.

"The relationship between her and Dante should be that of ruler and subject; how can a subject address their ruler so casually by name?"

Russia (19th century)

"How did Rodion become a woman?" Dostoevsky looked at Rodion on the Sky Screen in confusion.

He was truly surprised to see someone bearing the name of the protagonist of Crime and Punishment, which he wrote six years after returning to Saint Petersburg from his exile in Siberia, appearing on the Sky Screen.

I wonder what Sonya looks like?

(In the original work, at the end, Rodion chose to surrender under Sonya's guidance and was sentenced to exile in Siberia.)

Rodya: "Oh gosh, look at me keeping on. Hey, kid! You're up next!"

Sinclair: "Hello..."

Rodya: "Aw, boring~ That's it?"

[At this moment, a short boy with blonde hair appeared on the Sky Screen.]

Sinclair: "Oh! Sinclair... That's my name."

[VOGEL // SINCLAIR, SINNER #11]

[Even with the volatile nature of human growth around his age taken into consideration, this Sinner seems to get particularly startled or frown when spoken to. He isn't used to real combat at the moment, meaning that he may struggle to keep himself together at the sight of something as mild as spilt innards at first. As there may be those with violent tendencies among your crew, we recommend taking an approach focused on positive reinforcement with this Sinner. He appears to possess a murderous gaze that he himself isn't aware of; this is a hopeful sign that he has the potential to grow into an expert of our company's profession with the right stimuli.]

This boy looks awfully unnerved; did he even join this company of his own accord?

Sinclair: "… I—Is there anything else I need to say? This is my first corporate job…"

Warring States Period

"It seems this youth has received a proper education in etiquette, but judging by the Sky Screen's description and the current environment, he will sooner or later become a person who kills decisively," Xunzi commented on the Sinclair on the Sky Screen.

"'Human nature is shaped by learning and environment; left untended, it drifts astray.' This shows how powerful the shaping effect of the environment is on a person."

Han Dynasty

"Emitting murderous intent without realizing it... it seems the boy's true nature isn't as kind as it appears on the surface," Zhang Liang commented on Sinclair.

"If the son of that tyrant from the Qin State (Qin Shi Huang) had possessed such resolve, whether the Han Dynasty could even have been established would be another matter entirely."

(T/N: This refers to Fusu, who commanded a massive Qin frontier army yet still obeyed a forged imperial decree and committed suicide instead of resisting, which later generations often found baffling.)

People performing corvée labor somewhere

"Voluntary... just forced volunteering. Are we here for corvée labor voluntarily too?" a commoner carrying things said with a bitter smile.

"But looking at that kid's situation... it seems he really did come voluntarily," a commoner pulling a load nearby remarked.

"Slacking off, are we?" An overseer noticed a commoner dazing off and immediately lashed out with a whip.

Germany (20th century)

"It seems Emil is currently in the period of being threatened by Kromer. I wonder how the Damian on the Sky Screen will help him?" Hermann Hesse pondered.

(In the original work, Sinclair lied about stealing apples from a farm, and later when the apples actually went missing, the bully Kromer used it as leverage to threaten him for a long time. Eventually, with Damian's help, Kromer would run away at the sight of him.)

===[Sky Screen]===

Rodya: "Well, you'll learn the ropes in the coming days. 'Kay then, how about you next, nerdy pal!"

Yi Sang: "I am Yi Sang."

[하융 // YI SANG, SINNER #1]

[Formerly the youngest chief researcher at the [REDACTED] Wing, this Sinner possesses higher intelligence compared to most others. We estimate that everyday conversation with this Sinner will prove difficult for managers selected by our current screening process. Avoiding communication altogether will pose a risk on its own, however. If the Sinner remains silent for a long time, that means he is currently processing a line of deliberate thought; we recommend waiting patiently for him.]

Dante: "<… That's it?>"

Yi Sang: "Mhm. No smoke and mirrors."

===[Line Break]===

Qin Dynasty

"Wing? Another term has appeared. Combined with the previously mentioned Nest... the two must be closely interdependent," Li Si thought.

"If the Nest represents a place of residence, then the Wing is a place of work."

Three Kingdoms Period

"Hahahaha..." Cao Cao laughed nearby.

"Why does the Prime Minister laugh?" Jia Xu asked.

"Read the word 'Yishang' a few more times."

Yishang, yishang, yishang, yishang... Yi Sang!

Jia Xu: "I'm wearing quite a lot, why did it suddenly get a bit cold?" (Although specific months vary, most records confirm the Battle of Red Cliffs took place in winter.) (T/N: 衣裳 (yīshang) = clothing/clothes)

Tokyo, Japan (20th century)

Cough, cough, cough. Kim Hae-kyung lay on his hotel bed, coughing incessantly.

He had traveled to Tokyo in search of better medical conditions and a cultural atmosphere. However, he was arrested by the Japanese police on suspicion of holding dangerous thoughts, and was later released due to his deteriorating condition.

As he lay on the hotel bed, preparing to accept death, a small light screen appeared before his eyes. The moment he touched the light screen, he suddenly felt his health improve, as though clarity had briefly returned to his dying body.

Now he gazed calmly at the light screen and the Yi Sang who had appeared.

"Yi Sang... a good name... cough, cough, cough!"

(Yi Sang's pen name was taken from a painting box gifted to him by the painter Kim Hae-kyung to celebrate his admission to university. Because Kim Hae-kyung loved painting, Yi Sang chose "Sang" (箱, meaning "box") as part of his pen name to commemorate their friendship. Since boxes are made of wood, he selected the surname "Yi" (李), a common surname containing the wood radical, as it best suited his temperament.)

===[Sky Screen]===

I waited for him to see if he was being witty or something...

But he just stared vacantly out the window, disinterested.

===[Line Break]===

Song Dynasty

"Judging by the temperament he exudes, he should also be a man of letters," Su Shi said, looking at Yi Sang in the sky.

"But looking at his evaluation and expression, he is likely like me—not favored by the imperial court and exiled to a remote place." Su Shi couldn't help but feel a sense of pity as he thought of himself.

"Anyway, let's see if Huaimin is asleep yet."

(And somewhere, Zhang Huaimin was likewise still awake.)
