Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 - First Battle

===[Sky Screen]===

Vergilius: "Looks like they're just another pack of dirty Rats living in the Backstreets."

Faust: "Dante, I skipped over many details during our first battle. We were short on time, after all."

Faust: "However, without improvements to your strategic prowess, only defeat and slaughter lie in our path."

Qin Dynasty

"So you guys know you can't just keep acting recklessly." Qin Shi Huang couldn't help but complain.

However, this is indeed an opportunity. Although they can't handle those three even as a whole, they should be able to defeat a group of ordinary people.

Ming Dynasty

"If there's a better way to fight, why not use it from the start?" Emperor Hongwu of Ming quipped.

Even if time was tight, Faust should have taken on the task of command instead of the inexperienced Dante.

===[Sky Screen]===

Faust: "However, without improvements to your strategic prowess, only defeat and slaughter lie in our path."

Dante: ""

Faust: "Yes, we were brought back to life because you "turned back the clock.""

Stagira (circa unknown BC era)

"To endure pain in pursuit of purpose… perhaps that is part of virtue," Aristotle mused.

"It seems they have become bound to that clock-headed being, and just as ordinary people feel pain, Dante must also endure the agony of their deaths each time the clock is turned back."

===[Sky Screen]===

Vergilius: "That exposition doesn't seem to be of any immediate urgency, Miss Faust. Save the chatter for later. Sinners, off the bus."

Faust: "… Allow me to elaborate on the elements of combat."

[At this point, the scene shifts to a battle, and the following identities appear:

Yi Sang (Initial Identities)

Faust (Initial Identities)

Don Quixote (Initial Identities)

Ryoshu (Initial Identities)

Meursault (Initial Identities)

Hong Lu (Initial Identities)

Heathcliff (Initial Identities)

Ishmael (Initial Identities)

Rodya (Initial Identities)

Sinclair (Initial Identities)

Outis (Initial Identities)

Gregor (Initial Identities)

(Everyone is shown here intentionally to facilitate the demonstration of the battle.)]

[Following Dante's command, the twelve Sinners charged toward the enemy.]

Among the Common People

Li Si: "Hey! Didn't you say before that Yi Sang had trouble even killing a chicken? Look at him now."

Wang Wu: "That's true... but shouldn't daggers be used for assassination? Why are they being used on the front lines?"

Zhang San: "Let's put that aside for now. Look at that girl named Faust. That greatsword looks like it weighs over ten kilograms, yet she swings it with one hand and dodges attacks with such agility."

Er Gou: "Look at that guy named Hong Lu, he really knows how to wield that Guan Dao properly, beheading enemies while chatting and laughing."

Gou Dan: "And that guy named Meursault, that's real strength, he can shatter an enemy's bones with one punch."

Old Sha: "I think the strongest one is Ryoshu. She can cut down enemies without even drawing her sword."

===[Sky Screen]===

[The scene then shifts, revealing cracks appearing on the bodies of four Sinners.]

[As the cracks spread across their bodies, their attire began to transform as well.]

[E.G.O: Representation Emitter Faust] — "Faust knows all outcomes."

[E.G.O: Forest for the Flames Ryōshū] — "O.S.H.A.R.E. (Obligate style hearkens aflame this robust earth.)"

[E.G.O: Chains of Others Meursault] — "The multitude tightens its hold…"

[E.G.O: To Páthos Máthos Outis] — "The odyssey had a purpose…"

===[Line Break]===

Tang Dynasty

"Why did their body suddenly split open and change clothes? What's going on?" Emperor Taizong of Tang was puzzled as he watched this scene on the Sky Screen.

Germany (19th century)

"To claim knowledge of all outcomes..." Goethe couldn't help but exclaim.

With the devil's help, you can have anything, whether it's regaining youth or sensual pleasure.

But after you've had everything you need, would you be willing to sell your soul like Faust in my story?

(T/N: In the original story, Faust makes a pact with Mephistopheles. Faust says that if he ever becomes completely satisfied with life, so satisfied that he tells a moment to "stay" forever, then he loses the bet and his soul is forfeit.)

Japan (20th century)

"Even if everything is reduced to ashes… does that include your own daughter?" Akutagawa Ryunosuke asked.

France (20th century)

"Still bound by the gaze of those around you, Meursault," Camus said calmly.

Ionia (late 8th century AD)

"So even after all this, the journey still continues..." Homer murmured.
