Chapter 58 - Ch.58: The Truth We Inherited

Jeff remained inside his car long after the call ended.

The words kept repeating in his head.

She isn't.

Raven wasn't his sister.

He already knew that.

At least, he knew they weren't related by blood.

But hearing it from a stranger made everything feel different.

Because whoever had called him knew exactly what his father had hidden.

Jeff looked down at the documents scattered across the passenger seat.

Andrew's secrets.

Ellen's marriage.

The altered custody agreement.

The Hale family records.

And now his own birth records.

His entire childhood suddenly felt like a carefully constructed lie.

He reached for the folder again.

There was one document he hadn't examined closely.

A private record from the year he was born.

Jeff opened it.

His eyes widened.

There was no mother's name.

Only one sentence:

Child born outside Andrew's marriage. Identity of mother intentionally concealed.

Jeff stared at it.

"Why?"

He turned the page.

Nothing.

Another page.

Nothing.

Then he noticed a handwritten note in the corner.

Andrew knows. William knows. Ellen knows.

Jeff's stomach dropped.

"Ellen knew?"

He leaned back.

If Ellen knew about him, then maybe she had never hated him.

Maybe that explained why she had always treated him differently from Andrew.

Maybe she knew he was innocent.

Jeff closed his eyes.

And suddenly, he remembered Raven.

All the years they had spent together.

All the times she had defended him.

All the times he had defended her.

Until Bella.

Until he had betrayed her.

He had taken Bella away from Raven because he thought he was protecting his own interests.

He had convinced himself he was doing what was necessary.

Now he understood how much damage he had caused.

Jeff whispered,

"I really became my father's son."

---

At the Hale villa, Raven stood in front of the fireplace.

The photograph of Ellen and Vanessa rested in her hands.

Eleanor sat on the sofa.

Vanessa was studying another set of documents.

Raven looked at the picture again.

"Mark was there."

Vanessa nodded.

"He worked with Andrew for years."

"Was he part of the organization?"

"No."

"Then why was he around my mother?"

"Business."

Raven looked at her.

"You keep saying that."

"Because it's true."

"Then what are you not telling me?"

Vanessa looked up.

Raven's voice softened.

"I don't want another half-truth."

Vanessa sighed.

"I don't have the complete truth."

"Then tell me what you know."

Vanessa closed the folder.

"Mark had access to Andrew's business dealings. He knew about the Hale inheritance. He knew about you."

"Did he know you were my mother?"

"Yes."

Raven's eyes narrowed.

"Then he knew everything."

"Not everything."

"What didn't he know?"

"That Ellen and I had created a legal agreement concerning you."

Raven looked at the document.

"Why was it so important?"

"Because if anything happened to Ellen, you were supposed to come to me."

"And someone stopped that from happening."

"Yes."

Raven's jaw tightened.

"Then that person is responsible for taking me away from you."

Vanessa nodded.

"And perhaps for what happened to Ellen."

The room became quiet.

Eleanor stood and walked toward Raven.

She gently took her hand.

Raven looked at her.

"I hate that my whole life was decided by people who kept secrets."

Eleanor squeezed her hand.

"Your life isn't theirs anymore."

Raven smiled faintly.

"No."

She looked toward Vanessa.

"It isn't."

---

Vanessa suddenly noticed something in the documents.

She picked up one page.

"Wait."

Raven looked over.

"What?"

Vanessa turned the page around.

"There."

A signature.

Raven leaned closer.

"What is that?"

Vanessa's expression changed.

"Ellen's handwriting."

Eleanor frowned.

"But you said the custody document was forged."

"The altered one was."

Vanessa pointed at the bottom.

"This isn't part of the custody agreement."

"What is it?"

"A private note."

Raven read it.

Her mother's words stared back at her.

Vanessa, if anything happens to me, don't let Raven believe I abandoned her.

Raven's breathing stopped.

Eleanor immediately moved closer.

Raven continued reading.

She must know that I loved her every day of my life.

Tears slipped down Raven's face.

Vanessa looked away.

She couldn't bear watching her daughter hurt.

Raven kept reading.

And if she ever remembers what happened, tell her the truth. You were never the danger. You were the one who kept us safe.

Raven lowered the paper.

"She knew."

Vanessa nodded.

"She finally understood."

"She knew you didn't betray her."

"Yes."

"Then why did she still die?"

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"Because understanding the truth didn't make her safe."

Raven stared at her.

"What happened that night?"

Vanessa looked at the floor.

"I arrived after the attack had already begun."

"Who attacked her?"

"I don't know."

"Someone must have ordered it."

"Yes."

"Who?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"I never found the person who gave the order."

Raven's expression hardened.

"Then we'll find them."

Vanessa looked at her daughter.

"You sound like Ellen."

Raven smiled sadly.

"Maybe that's a good thing."

"It is."

---

The next morning, Jeff arrived at the villa.

Raven was waiting for him.

He stopped when he saw Vanessa.

He had always known her as Aunt V.

But now he understood who she really was.

"Vanessa."

She nodded.

"Jeff."

He looked at Raven.

"We need to talk."

Raven crossed her arms.

"About what?"

"My father."

"That isn't my problem."

"I know."

He took a breath.

"But I found something."

Raven didn't move.

"Go on."

Jeff handed her a folder.

"These are records from before I was born."

Raven opened it.

She read through the documents.

"What am I looking at?"

"Proof that Andrew was hiding things even from me."

"Your mother?"

"I don't know who she was."

Raven looked up.

Jeff's expression was complicated.

"But I found something else."

"What?"

"Andrew knew about your real family."

Raven's eyes narrowed.

"I already knew that."

"No."

Jeff shook his head.

"He knew more than just Vanessa's identity."

Raven looked at him.

"He knew Ellen planned to give you to Vanessa."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"How?"

"Because Andrew had a copy of the original agreement."

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Where?"

Jeff pointed to a page.

"His private archive."

Raven studied it.

"Why would he keep it?"

"Leverage."

Vanessa nodded.

"That sounds like him."

Jeff looked at Raven.

"I also found something about Bella."

Raven's expression immediately changed.

"What about her?"

Jeff swallowed.

"I know what I did."

"Do you?"

"Yes."

"You took her from me."

"I did."

"You made decisions about my daughter without me."

"I know."

Raven's eyes became cold.

"Then don't expect me to forget."

"I don't."

Jeff looked down.

"But I want to make it right."

Raven laughed softly.

"You can't."

"I know."

He looked at her.

"But I can stop making it worse."

Raven studied him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Raven said,

"Where is Bella?"

Jeff hesitated.

"She is safe."

"That wasn't my question."

Jeff looked away.

"I'll bring her back."

Raven's expression softened only slightly.

"You better."

---

Suddenly, Vanessa's phone rang.

She answered.

"What?"

A masked operative spoke.

Vanessa's expression changed.

"Repeat that."

She listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

Raven noticed.

"What happened?"

Vanessa looked at her.

"We found the person who accessed William's private records."

"Who?"

Vanessa hesitated.

"Someone who worked for William."

Raven's eyes narrowed.

"Name?"

"Thomas."

Jeff frowned.

"Thomas?"

Vanessa nodded.

"He was William's personal secretary."

Raven looked confused.

"Then why would he betray my family?"

Vanessa's voice became quiet.

"He didn't."

Raven frowned.

"What?"

"He died six years ago."

Silence.

"Then someone is using his identity," Eleanor said.

Vanessa nodded.

"Exactly."

Raven's phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

You keep searching for the wrong person.

Another message.

Your mother didn't die because Vanessa failed to protect her.

Raven's blood ran cold.

A third message appeared.

She died because she trusted the wrong person.

Raven looked at Vanessa.

"Who did my mother trust?"

Vanessa didn't answer.

Raven stared at her.

"Vanessa."

Vanessa's expression became distant.

Then she whispered,

"William."

Raven froze.

"My grandfather?"

"Yes."

"But you said he loved Ellen."

"He did."

"Then why would she trust him?"

Vanessa looked at the photograph of Ellen.

"Because he was her father."

She paused.

"And because Ellen believed he would always choose her."

Raven's stomach tightened.

"Did he?"

Vanessa's eyes filled with pain.

"I don't know."

---

That evening, Raven returned to the old Hale estate with Eleanor.

Vanessa followed.

Jeff came too.

The archives were hidden beneath the estate.

William had kept them behind a locked steel door.

Raven entered the room.

Rows of files filled the shelves.

She began searching.

Eleanor stayed beside her.

Jeff searched another section.

Vanessa stood in the center of the room, remembering the last time she had been there with Ellen.

Then Raven found a box.

The label read:

ELLEN HALE — PRIVATE

She opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Raven unfolded it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Ellen.

Raven began reading aloud.

«"My daughter,

If you are reading this, then the truth has finally found you.

There are things I could never tell you while I was alive.

Vanessa is your mother.

She loved you before she ever held you.

I left her because I was afraid.

And I spent the rest of my life regretting it.

If anyone tells you that Vanessa abandoned us, don't believe them.

She didn't.

She was the only person who never stopped looking for us."»

Raven's tears fell onto the paper.

Eleanor wrapped an arm around her.

Raven continued.

«"There is one more thing you must know.

The person responsible for my death is not the person you think.

I trusted them.

I loved them.

And I gave them access to everything."»

Raven stopped reading.

The next line was partially torn.

Only three words remained.

"It was someone…"

Raven stared at the damaged page.

"Who?"

Vanessa stepped closer.

"I don't know."

Raven turned the letter over.

Something was written on the back.

A single initial.

A.

Jeff looked at it.

"A."

Raven's eyes narrowed.

"Andrew."

Vanessa shook her head.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because Ellen wouldn't have written his initial like that."

Raven looked at her.

"Then whose?"

Vanessa stared at the letter.

Her face slowly changed.

"Adrian."

The room went silent.

Raven remembered the name.

Adrian.

One of the people connected to the secret from the beginning.

The person she had never fully understood.

The person who had always seemed to know more than he admitted.

Raven closed her fist around the letter.

"Then we're going to find him."

Vanessa nodded.

"Together."

Eleanor took Raven's hand.

Jeff looked at the three women.

For once, nobody was hiding anything.

But somewhere in the darkness outside the estate, a phone rang.

A man answered.

"Did they find the letter?"

A voice replied,

"Yes."

The man smiled.

"Good."

"And Adrian?"

The man looked toward the Hale estate.

"He knows exactly what to do."

The call ended.

And beneath the old Hale estate, Raven unknowingly held the first piece of the truth that had destroyed her family.

To be continued…
