Chapter 57 - Ch.57: The Voice of Ellen

The silence after the recording was unbearable.

Eleanor was the first to move.

She reached for Raven's hand.

Raven didn't respond.

She couldn't.

Her mother's voice was still echoing inside her head.

The person you trust most is the one who betrayed us.

Raven slowly turned toward Vanessa.

Vanessa stood completely still.

Her face had lost all color.

"Vanessa?"

Nothing.

"Vanessa."

She finally looked at Raven.

"I don't know who she meant."

Raven's eyes narrowed.

"You're lying."

Vanessa's expression tightened.

"I would never lie to you about Ellen."

"But you knew she was afraid."

"Yes."

"You knew someone betrayed her."

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I didn't know who it was."

Raven stared at her.

"After all these years?"

Vanessa nodded.

"I found pieces. Names. Transactions. Dead ends. Every time I got close, the evidence disappeared."

Eleanor stepped closer.

"Then what did Ellen mean?"

Vanessa looked toward the speakers.

"I don't know."

A slow clap came from the darkness.

Everyone turned.

Andrew stepped out from behind the hallway.

"That's the problem with secrets."

His voice was calm.

"They always leave questions behind."

Raven raised her weapon.

"Where is the rest of the recording?"

Andrew smiled.

"Gone."

Vanessa's eyes hardened.

"You knew about it."

"Of course."

"You planted the recording."

"No."

Andrew's smile widened.

"Ellen left it."

Raven's eyes narrowed.

"Then where is the rest?"

Andrew looked at her.

"That's what you're going to find out."

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small black drive.

Raven's attention immediately focused on it.

"The rest of the recording is on there."

"Give it to me."

Andrew laughed.

"You still think you can order everyone around."

Raven took one step forward.

"I don't think."

Her voice became dangerously calm.

"I know."

Andrew looked at Vanessa.

"She really is your daughter."

Vanessa's eyes softened for half a second.

"Yes."

Andrew noticed.

"That look."

Raven glanced at Vanessa.

"What look?"

Andrew smiled.

"The way she looks at you."

He shook his head.

"Ellen used to look at Vanessa exactly like that."

Raven's expression changed.

"You knew them."

"I knew everything."

---

Andrew slowly placed the drive on the table.

Raven didn't lower her weapon.

"Why did you marry my mother?"

Andrew looked toward the photograph of Ellen.

"Because William Hale wanted stability for his daughter."

"That isn't an answer."

"No."

Andrew sighed.

"I married Ellen because I wanted access to the Hale family."

Raven's eyes hardened.

"The inheritance."

"The influence."

"The name."

He nodded.

"All of it."

"And Raven?"

Andrew looked directly at her.

"You were the complication."

Raven's jaw tightened.

"You knew Vanessa was my mother."

"Yes."

"And you knew Ellen loved her."

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because the truth gave me leverage."

Raven lowered her weapon slightly.

"You used my entire childhood as leverage."

Andrew's expression remained cold.

"Your mother would have done anything to keep you safe."

"And Vanessa?"

"Vanessa would have burned the world down."

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"That made both of them predictable."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"You don't get to speak about them like that."

Andrew looked at her.

"You still haven't changed."

"No."

Vanessa's voice was quiet.

"But you have."

Andrew's smile disappeared.

---

Jeff remained near the staircase.

He looked at the drive.

"What happened to Ellen?"

Andrew glanced at him.

"Why do you care?"

"She was my father's wife."

"She was never your mother."

Jeff's face tightened.

"I know."

Andrew laughed.

"You were always weak."

Jeff stepped forward.

"No."

He shook his head.

"I was selfish."

Andrew raised an eyebrow.

Jeff looked at Raven.

"I hurt her."

Raven remained silent.

"I took Bella from her."

Andrew shrugged.

"And?"

Jeff looked back at his father.

"And I have to live with that."

His voice became firmer.

"But what you did to Ellen isn't something I can ignore."

Andrew's expression hardened.

"You think standing against me makes you better?"

"No."

Jeff shook his head.

"It just means I'm finally making a choice that isn't about myself."

Raven watched him.

She still didn't trust him.

She still hadn't forgiven him.

But for the first time, she understood that Jeff was beginning to face the person he had become.

---

Suddenly, a gunshot came from outside.

Vanessa immediately turned.

Her phone vibrated.

She answered.

"What?"

A masked voice spoke rapidly.

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"How many?"

She listened.

"Don't engage."

She ended the call.

Raven looked at her.

"What is it?"

"They're surrounding the estate."

"Who?"

Vanessa looked toward the windows.

"Someone has taken control of part of my organization."

Raven's eyes hardened.

"The traitor."

"Yes."

Andrew smiled.

"They're closer than you think."

Vanessa turned toward him.

"You knew this was happening."

"I knew it would happen."

"Where are they?"

Andrew didn't answer.

Raven stepped forward.

"You're going to tell us."

Andrew laughed.

"You still don't understand."

He looked at Raven.

"This was never about killing you."

Raven's expression changed.

"Then what is it about?"

"Control."

He pointed toward the Hale estate.

"The Hale family built an empire."

He looked at Vanessa.

"You built an organization."

Then at Raven.

"And Ellen gave you access to both."

Raven frowned.

"I don't want either."

"That doesn't matter."

Andrew's voice became colder.

"People like us don't get to choose what we're born into."

Raven's eyes narrowed.

"I'm not like you."

"No."

Andrew smiled.

"You're worse."

Eleanor stepped forward.

"Don't listen to him."

Andrew looked at her.

"You."

Raven immediately moved between them.

"Don't look at her."

Andrew smiled.

"So that's the weakness."

Raven's expression became deadly.

"Careful."

"Eleanor."

Raven's hand tightened around her weapon.

Andrew continued.

"You love her."

Raven said nothing.

"That's dangerous."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Enough."

Andrew looked at her.

"You're the same as Ellen."

"What?"

"You both became weak when you loved someone."

Vanessa's expression changed.

"No."

She looked at Raven.

"Love didn't make Ellen weak."

Then at Eleanor.

"And it won't make Raven weak."

Raven looked at her mother.

Vanessa smiled faintly.

"It is the reason she survived."

---

A loud crash came from downstairs.

The windows shattered.

Masked men stormed into the estate.

Raven immediately pulled Eleanor behind the wall.

Vanessa moved with terrifying speed.

The first attacker barely had time to react before Vanessa disarmed him.

Raven joined her.

Jeff grabbed a weapon from the floor.

For several minutes, the room became chaos.

Glass.

Footsteps.

Shouting.

Gunfire.

The masked attackers moved like trained professionals.

Raven recognized their movements.

"These are Vanessa's people."

Vanessa nodded.

"Some of them."

Raven fought beside her.

For the first time, mother and daughter stood together openly.

Not as Aunt V and Raven.

Not as two strangers connected by a secret.

As family.

Eleanor stayed close, protecting herself while helping Raven whenever she could.

Jeff fought too.

Not perfectly.

Not fearlessly.

But he fought.

Eventually, the attackers began retreating.

Vanessa caught one before he could escape.

She pulled off his mask.

Raven froze.

She knew him.

He had worked for Vanessa for years.

"Who are you working for?"

The man refused to answer.

Vanessa's expression became cold.

"Answer me."

He laughed.

"You already know."

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Who?"

The man looked toward Raven.

Then smiled.

"Ellen never knew how close the traitor was."

He swallowed.

"Neither do you."

Before Vanessa could question him further, he bit down.

His body went limp.

Raven stared.

"Poison."

Vanessa nodded.

"He was trained not to talk."

Eleanor looked around.

"They knew they might die."

"Yes."

Raven looked toward Andrew.

He was gone.

"Where is Andrew?"

Vanessa looked around.

"He escaped."

Jeff ran toward the hallway.

"He left through the back."

Raven followed him.

They reached the rear entrance.

The door was open.

Andrew was gone.

But something lay on the ground.

A photograph.

Raven picked it up.

Her breathing stopped.

It was a picture of Ellen.

Vanessa stood beside her.

And in the background—

a much younger Mark.

Raven stared at the photograph.

"Mark."

Jeff looked over her shoulder.

"That's my father's old associate."

Vanessa's expression changed.

"I know him."

Raven looked at her.

"You trusted him?"

"Once."

"Then maybe he is the person Ellen was talking about."

Vanessa shook her head.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because Mark wasn't the closest person to Ellen."

Raven looked confused.

"Who was?"

Vanessa's eyes moved to Jeff.

Then to Raven.

"Someone inside the Hale family."

Silence.

Jeff's face fell.

"You think someone in our family betrayed her?"

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes."

Raven looked at the photograph again.

Then she noticed something written on the back.

Four words.

Ask William about Vanessa.

Raven's heart pounded.

"My grandfather knew."

Vanessa slowly took the photograph.

"William knew more than he ever told us."

Raven looked at her.

"Then we're going back to the Hale archives."

Vanessa nodded.

Eleanor stepped beside Raven.

"Together."

Raven looked at her and smiled faintly.

"Always."

---

Later That Night

Jeff sat alone in his car.

The photograph was still in his mind.

He pulled out his phone and opened the records he had stolen from Andrew's office.

One document caught his attention.

He read it once.

Then again.

His hands began to tremble.

The document wasn't about Raven.

It wasn't about Ellen.

It was about him.

A private record concerning Andrew's affairs.

Jeff's birth.

And a name beside his.

A woman he had never heard of.

His mother.

Jeff stared at the page.

Then another detail caught his eye.

"Child concealed from Hale family records."

Jeff's breathing became shallow.

His entire life had been built on lies.

He whispered:

"What the hell did you do, Dad?"

His phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Jeff answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

"Your father wasn't the only one keeping secrets."

Jeff froze.

"Who are you?"

"You want the truth about Raven?"

Jeff's eyes narrowed.

"What about her?"

"You've spent your entire life believing she was your sister."

Jeff's blood ran cold.

The voice continued.

"She isn't."

The call ended.

Jeff stared into the darkness.

And for the first time, he realized that Raven wasn't the only person whose family history had been rewritten.
