🐦🔥 [ Phoenix ☯ POV ] 🐦🔥
Before Nix could fully register the scent, a sudden draft slipped through the quiet room, too warm to belong to any open window. It brushed against Phoenix's cheek like a phantom hand, achingly familiar in a way his mind could not name.
Solaris went as still as death, tiny claws tightening in Phoenix's clothes. There was no killing intent. No immediate danger. Nothing for him to bare his claws against.
And yet Phoenix's mortal heart gave a violent, unexplainable thud against his ribs.
Something unseen tugged deep beneath his sternum, thin and burning, like a red thread pulled taut across lifetimes.
Then, directly against the shell of his ear, a voice coalesced from the empty air—gasping, fragmented, and vibrating with an ancient, agonizing devotion.
"Nae saram, Nikki-ya..."
Nix froze, the air trapping itself in his lungs.
The words meant nothing to the conscious part of him. They should have been only sounds, unfamiliar syllables shaped by a voice no one else in the room seemed to hear. But his soul reacted before his mind could catch up, wrenching toward that voice with a desperation so sharp it nearly split him open.
Nikki.
The name struck him harder than the Korean had, intimate in a way no stranger should know. It was not Phoenix. It was not Nix. It was something smaller. Older. Buried so deep the Jailer System should never have been able to touch it.
A profound, terrifying wave of homesickness washed over him, hot enough to sting the backs of his eyes. For one impossible breath, he remembered warmth without image, arms without a body, laughter without a face. He remembered being called back from darkness by that voice again and again, though he could not remember when, where, or why.
Then the red thread inside him pulled tighter.
Pain flashed beneath his ribs. Not mortal pain. Not the clean, physical ache of bone or blood. This was spiritual—ancient and raw, as if something had once been torn out of him and the wound had never truly closed.
Solaris gave a strangled chirp in his lap and flared both wings.
'Mama!'
The cry burst through their restricted mind link bright with panic. Solaris pressed harder against him, feathers bristling, his small body turning instinctively between Phoenix and the empty air. But there was nothing to attack. No enemy to intercept. No shadow to burn.
Only that scent—sandalwood, cardamom, amber, and faint vanilla—warming the room like a memory that had crossed death itself to find him.
"...nae ban-jjok — 내 반쪽, my other half," the voice strained, fading into the room as if fighting against a massive, invisible pressure. "Hold fast... remember me... before the thread breaks again..."
The last word splintered.
For a heartbeat, the air in front of Phoenix shimmered.
Not enough for a face. Not enough for a body. Only the suggestion of a figure kneeling through firelight and starlight, one hand reaching for him from the other side of a veil no mortal eye was meant to see. Long fingers. A flash of dark hair. Gold bleeding through cracked darkness. Crimson light wound around a wrist like a binding oath.
Nix reached back before he knew he had moved.
His hand lifted from Solaris's back, trembling toward the empty space before him. The instant his fingers breached the warm draft, something inside him screamed—not in fear, but recognition.
The room vanished.
For less than a blink, he was somewhere else.
A boundless heaven of dawn-colored stars opened around him, endless and hushed, as if the universe itself had lowered its voice. Beneath his bare feet, a lotus altar of silver light bloomed across still water, reflecting two moons, two suns, and two souls standing face-to-face at the center of creation. The man before him wore robes white as first snow and gold as morning flame, his dark hair crowned with starlight, his eyes filled with such tender certainty that Nix's breath caught before he could remember why.
Their hands were joined. Between their palms, a circular seal of crimson and gold slowly turned, weaving Dao runes, phoenix fire, dragon light, and threads of fate into a single endless knot. The mark was not carved by priest or law; it was written by their souls themselves. With every pulse, it sang a vow older than worlds: lifetime after lifetime, death after death, calamity after calamity, I will find you.
The man smiled at him as if Nix was the first sunrise after eternal night, then bent his forehead to Nix's. Around them, the stars descended like wedding lanterns, and the heavens answered in a rain of light. Their joined hands lifted. The Eternal Dao Seal settled between their brows, warm and absolute, sealing not possession, but recognition; not ownership, but return. Two men, two halves, one Dao. One home.
That same voice, gentle enough to make the memory ache, whispered against him as the seal flared brighter than the sun. "내 꺼. Naekkeo, Nikki-ya. Do not let go." Then the vision shattered.
Phoenix jerked hard in Yong-Jae's arms with a soundless gasp, his hand snapping back to his chest as if the thread had burned him. Solaris shrieked once, small and furious, and the lights in the room flickered.
Every Beyol startled.
"Phoenix?" Yong-Jae's voice cut through the ringing in his ears, frightened now. His arms tightened. "Little bird. Look at me. Tell me what happened."
Phoenix tried.
He truly tried.
But when he opened his mouth, the answer was gone. The vision had dissolved into smoke and pain, leaving only the echo of a name no one here should have known and a scent that made his soul ache like it had been waiting for centuries.
The phantom warmth vanished, but the place it had touched remained burning.
Surrounded by family, with Solaris trembling against his lap and Yong-Jae holding him like he might disappear, Nix had never felt more aware of the missing shape beside his soul.
He knew that voice. Not with memory. Not with reason. With something older than both.

The Chronostatic Echo passed in only a few breaths.
To the Beyols, nothing impossible had happened. There had been no crimson thread, no distant voice, no unseen figure reaching through the dark between worlds with eyes like fire. There was only Phoenix going suddenly still in Yong-Jae's arms, his expression shifting into something too far away for any of them to follow.
They felt the change in him all the same.
Yong-Jae's hand tightened once at the back of his head. Eomeoni's eyes sharpened. Abeoji drew in a slow breath, and Nuna looked as if she wanted to ask, but no one spoke. Not after the way Phoenix had broken open only moments before.
A silent agreement passed between them: let him settle. Let him breathe. Let him return when he was ready.
Solaris alone went unnaturally still.
Something inside his tiny body had answered the Echo before his mind could understand why. Not memory. Not exactly. More like an old command buried beneath feathers and scales, sealed so deeply that even he could only feel the shape of it when Phoenix's soul trembled.
Protect him.
Wait.
Do not speak too soon.
Solaris pressed closer to Phoenix's lap, his small claws curling carefully into the fabric. He did not know enough to explain the ache in Nix's chest. He only knew that some truths were not meant to hatch before their time.
And somewhere beyond the reach of the room, something that should have remained asleep stirred once—and went silent.
But on Phoenix's finger, where no one else could see, a single line of crimson light flickered like a heartbeat before disappearing.

☯ Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯: So… Chapter 20 happened.
Nix🐦🔥: Define "happened."
☯ Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯: A mysterious scent appeared, your soul tried to leave the group chat, an ancient voice called you by a name you do not remember, and a suspicious cosmic phenomenon politely wrecked your emotional stability.
Nix🐦🔥: That was not polite.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: It did not even knock.
Nix🐦🔥: Exactly. Very rude. If ancient soul trauma wants access to my chest cavity, it should submit a request form.
☯ Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯: A request form?
Nix🐦🔥: In triplicate.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: With snacks attached.
Nix🐦🔥: Solaris.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: What? If mysterious cosmic forces want Mama's attention, they should bring offerings.
☯ Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯: I feel like "snacks as spiritual tribute" is not how the Dao works.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: Maybe not your Dao.
Nix🐦🔥: Why did that sound ominous?
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: Because I am small, adorable, and narratively suspicious.
☯ Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯: At least you admit it.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: I admit nothing. I merely sparkle with plausible deniability.
Nix🐦🔥: You definitely know something.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: I know many things. For example, if Mama eats something sweet, Mama becomes twenty-two percent less likely to threaten reality.
Nix🐦🔥: That statistic is fake.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: It is emotionally accurate.
☯ Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯: Readers, please note: Chapter 20's strange event is called a Chronostatic Echo.
Nix🐦🔥: I hate that it has a name.
☯ Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯: Most terrible things do.
Nix🐦🔥: That was deeply unhelpful.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: Mama, would you like comfort roundness?
Nix🐦🔥: I would like answers.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: Comfort roundness is available now. Answers are currently locked behind plot progression.
Nix🐦🔥: I hate both of you.
☯ Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯: Lovingly?
Nix🐦🔥: Begrudgingly.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: I accept.
☯ Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯: Anyway, my lovely dragon-phoenixes and phoenix-dragons, Chapter 20 opened the door to something old, sealed, and very much not finished with Nix.
Nix🐦🔥: You could have phrased that in a way that did not make me want to run.
☯ Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯: You would only emotionally run. Physically, Solaris would sit on you.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: I am a powerful restraint system.
Nix🐦🔥: You are the size of a decorative pillow.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: A majestic decorative pillow.
☯ Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯: Final thoughts, Nix?
Nix🐦🔥: If anyone hears a mysterious voice whispering near their ear, do not touch the glowing thread.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: Unless it is plot-relevant.
Nix🐦🔥: Especially if it is plot-relevant.
☯ Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯: See you next chapter.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: Bring snacks.
Nix🐦🔥: And emotional support.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: I am emotional support.
Nix🐦🔥: You are emotional chaos with wings.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: Same thing.
