🐦🔥 [ Phoenix ☯ POV ] 🐦🔥
Yong-Jae's words broke whatever control Phoenix had left. The warmth of the room, the family's acceptance, and the echo of that impossible soul-deep ache all folded together until he could no longer hold himself upright inside his own heart.
His breath hitched first. Once. Twice. Then his face crumpled before he could stop it.
Each sob shook his whole body as Phoenix let go of the pain he had carried for far too many years. He cried for the child who had wanted to be someone's little bird and had learned too early how to survive without a nest.
He cried for every version of himself that had mistaken endurance for healing, every life where his body had kept moving long after his heart had gone numb.
Yong-Jae rocked him once, barely more than a sway, and bowed over him as if folding himself around Phoenix was the only answer he knew how to give.
"That's it," Yong-Jae murmured. "Breathe with me. In and out. There you are. My brave little phoenix. My precious little bird. You came back to us. You are here. You are home."
And Phoenix, shattered and shaking, believed him.
For a long while, there was nothing but Yong-Jae's heartbeat under his ear, the slow pass of fingers through his hair, and the humiliating, relieving sound of his own sobs breaking loose.
Phoenix hated how exposed he felt. Hated how small. Hated that sheer will and spite could not pull him back together the way they always had before.
But beneath the shame and old fear, something warmer and far more dangerous began to unfurl.
Trust.
Not the tactical kind built from usefulness, contracts, leverage, or necessity. This was softer. Worse. Better. The kind that asked him to believe someone might stay simply because they loved him.
'Is this what it feels like?' Nix thought, dazed and aching as Yong-Jae's hand remained steady at the back of his head. 'To have somewhere to fall? To be held without being owned? To be seen breaking and not be punished for it?'
By the time the sobs finally loosened their grip, Phoenix felt emptied out in a way that was almost frightening. His throat burned. His eyes ached. His body felt heavy and boneless against Yong-Jae's chest.
Yet somewhere beneath the exhaustion, there was a strange quiet he did not recognize. Not peace, exactly. Peace was too clean a word for something this raw.
It was more like a battlefield after the fire had burned itself down—smoke still rising, ground still scarred, but the fighting finally, mercifully paused.
Phoenix kept his face hidden against Yong-Jae's shirt, too embarrassed to look up. His fingers were still twisted in the fabric. He should have let go. He did not.
A smaller, quieter thought rose beneath the shame, fragile as a newly hatched bird. 'He did not push me away.'
That realization hurt more than the crying had. Yong-Jae had seen him shaking, needy, and undone, and he had not flinched.
He had not demanded that Phoenix explain the depth of a pain even Phoenix did not fully understand. He had simply stayed, warm and steady, as if Phoenix's broken pieces were not burdensome things to hold.
'Maybe... maybe this body remembered him before I did,' Nix thought, his heart giving a tired, tender ache. 'Maybe little bird was not just a nickname. Maybe it was a promise I forgot I was allowed to believe in.'
The thought did not fix anything. Nix knew better than to believe one hug could erase centuries of blood, loss, and survival sharpened into instinct.
He was still himself. Still dangerous. Still full of secrets that would make this gentle family look at him differently if they knew the shape of them.
But for the first time since waking in this life, he wondered if maybe being dangerous did not mean he had to be alone.
For a while, nothing in the room moved except Yong-Jae's hand sheltering the back of Phoenix's head and the uneven rise and fall of Phoenix's breathing.
The Beyols sat around them in a silence that no longer felt stunned so much as protective. None of them blamed him for the name. What hollowed them out was the realization that Phoenix had spoken of danger, exposure, and protection as if bearing it alone had been a foregone conclusion.
As if love meant placing himself between the world and everyone else, then smiling brightly enough that no one noticed the blood on his hands.
Solaris had never seen his Mama break like this.
For one suspended heartbeat, Solaris froze where he was, feathers fluffed and wings half-lifted. Through their restricted mind link, he reached for Phoenix on instinct, only to brush against static, heat, fractured sorrow, and the fading golden ache that had shaken Nix's soul at the words uri Jageun-sae.
It was not clear thought, not words—only hurt pressed so tightly behind walls that even the bond could catch only the edges of it.
Panic fluttered through Solaris's chest. If he could have swallowed all of it for his Mama, he would have done so without hesitation.
'Mama... why did you never let me see this? Did you think I could not bear it? Or was the hurt so old that even you forgot how to let someone touch it?'
Unable to bear staying still any longer, Solaris launched himself from his perch. His wings beat once, twice, stirring the air beside Phoenix's cheek with the faint warmth of sun-baked feathers and scales. His tiny body undulated gracefully, pearlescent scales shifting in luminous waves, before he landed carefully in his Mama's lap.
His tiny claws gripped the fabric there, firm but gentle, anchoring himself without hurting him.
Solaris pressed himself against Phoenix's stomach, his feathers soft against the damp tremble of Phoenix's clothes. He tucked his head beneath Phoenix's hand, nudging the palm until Phoenix's fingers curled weakly into his plumage.
When Phoenix's touch faltered, Solaris rubbed his cheek along his knuckles and let out a low, soothing chirr that vibrated through his small chest.
Then he pushed warmth through the bond—not words, not questions, just the simple, fierce promise of I am here, Mama. I am here. I am not leaving.
Phoenix's breath hitched. Then, slowly, it began to follow the rhythm of Solaris's soft chirring. Inhale. Tremble. Exhale. Again. Again.
The weight of Solaris in his lap grounded him, and the warm pulse of the bond beneath his palm gave his mind something steady to hold.
Bit by bit, the chaos inside Phoenix loosened. Solaris felt the storm quiet—not vanish, never vanish, but settle into something less jagged. Satisfied for only a breath, he lifted his head. Then his instincts prickled. He scanned the room, but before he could take in even half of it, his nose twitched. A light, warm, intoxicating scent of sandalwood, cardamom, amber, and a trace of vanilla drifted through the air—so familiar to Phoenix's soul that Solaris went still before he understood why.

✨Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯ : So… Chapter 19 ended up shorter than usual.
Nix🐦🔥: Good. My emotional suffering was already efficient.
✨Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯ : Efficient?
Nix🐦🔥: I broke down, got hugged, questioned my existence, discovered family love is dangerous, and triggered a suspicious soul reaction. That is a full schedule.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: Mama also cried on Hyung.
Nix🐦🔥: I did not cry on him. I released emotional pressure in his general direction.
✨Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯ : His shirt may disagree.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: His shirt was very brave.
Nix🐦🔥: I am being attacked in the Author's Note.
✨Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯ : Lovingly.
Nix🐦🔥: That does not make it better.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: It does. Mama secretly likes being loved.
Nix🐦🔥: Solaris.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: I said secretly. Very respectful.
✨Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯ : Readers, Chapter 19 is shorter because it needed to breathe. Nix needed a quiet emotional landing before the next mystery opened its eyes.
Nix🐦🔥: Why did you say that so ominously?
✨Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯ : No reason.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: Absolutely no reason. Nothing suspicious happened. No mysterious scent. No soul ache. No invisible thread. No ancient cosmic nonsense.
Nix🐦🔥: That was too specific.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: I am a tiny majestic creature. Specificity is part of my charm.
Nix🐦🔥: You know something.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: I know many things. For example, snacks improve morale.
✨Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯ : Nice dodge.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: Thank you. I am very agile.
Nix🐦🔥: Both of you are suspicious.
✨Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯ : And you are traumatized, beloved, and about to be plot-relevant in ways you are not emotionally prepared for.
Nix🐦🔥: I dislike that sentence.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: Mama, do you want comfort roundness?
Nix🐦🔥: …Maybe.
✨Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯ : See? Character development.
Nix🐦🔥: This is not character development. This is emotional blackmail with feathers.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: And scales.
✨Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯ : Anyway, My lovely dragon-phoenixes & phoenix-dragons, thank you for reading. Chapter 19 may be shorter, but it carries a lot of heart. Chapter 20 opens the door to something much older, much stranger, and hopefully very fun to scream about later.
Nix🐦🔥: Why would they scream?
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: No reason.
✨Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯ : No reason at all.
Nix🐦🔥: I hate it here.
🐉Solaris🐦🔥: Mama says that, but he is still staying.
✨ Mrs_TNT / Tiff ☯ : See you in Chapter 20.
