Chapter 763: Arsenal's Nemesis
After 30 minutes of play, Manchester United finally opted for a defensive counter-attacking strategy.
During the earlier spell of United's relentless offensive, Arsenal had been under heavy pressure. However, even a struggling Arsenal showed their mettle, their quality undeniable. Once they began to stabilize defensively, United wisely avoided taking unnecessary risks.
Arsenal's players, clearly dealing with fatigue, had been caught off guard by United's rapid counter to equalize. Their morale seemed dampened, and their energy levels didn't compare favorably—not only to United's adrenaline-fueled players but even to the performance Arsenal displayed in their first-leg meeting at Old Trafford.
By the 31st minute, United's transition to a cautious, counter-attacking style made the match somewhat subdued.
In the 36th minute, Arsenal created a solid chance. Nicolas Pépé carried the ball forward, delivering a lofted pass into the box for Alexandre Lacazette, whose volley from a tight angle smashed into the side netting.
The play bore a striking resemblance to Bruno Fernandes' earlier goal.
...
Neither team generated much after that. Arsenal appeared sluggish and uninspired, while United prioritized defensive solidity.
A minor skirmish occurred in the 38th minute when Granit Xhaka and N'Golo Kanté clashed while contesting the ball. However, the two quickly reconciled with an embrace, diffusing the situation.
In the 40th minute, Bruno set up João Cancelo with a smart pass, but the Portuguese fullback's shot rolled just wide, failing to trouble Arsenal's defense.
This sequence encapsulated the match's dynamic: Arsenal struggled to find their rhythm under United's disciplined approach, while United's counters were threatening but not lethal.
At halftime, both Bruno Fernandes and José Mourinho warned their teammates to stay vigilant, predicting Arsenal's determination to surge in the second half.
Their intuition proved correct.
At the start of the second half, Arsenal came out swinging.
Within moments, Lucas Torreira lofted a ball to the back post, where Lacazette rose to challenge Victor Lindelöf. However, his header lacked power and went straight into David de Gea's arms.
Just a minute later, Kanté tripped Xhaka, earning himself a yellow card.
From the resulting free kick, Mesut Özil curled the ball over the wall, but it landed harmlessly in De Gea's gloves.
...
For the next several minutes, Arsenal intensified their attacks. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Lacazette, and Xhaka all had chances but failed to convert.
Recognizing the mounting pressure, Mourinho made his first substitution: Fred replaced Harry Kane, bolstering United's midfield. This move pushed Bruno to the right wing, where he joined Kylian Mbappé and Marcus Rashford in forming a dynamic front three.
Aubameyang soon came closest to scoring. Breaking the offside trap, he raced into the box to face De Gea one-on-one. However, his first touch let him down, allowing Lindelöf to recover and force him into a rushed shot that went wide.
A frustrated Aubameyang protested to the referee, claiming Lindelöf had pulled his shirt, but the official waved him off.
Meanwhile, Arsenal's manager Mikel Arteta made his own changes. Reiss Nelson replaced the underwhelming Pépé.
Pépé, signed for €80 million in the summer, had failed to live up to his price tag, with only five goals across all competitions. Despite his early goal today, his subsequent performance was lackluster, prompting Arteta's decision to take him off.
Shortly after, Arteta made another bold substitution: Bukayo Saka replaced Kolašinac, signaling a switch to a 3-4-3 formation.
It was a high-risk, high-reward gamble. Arsenal threw everything forward, aware that a 1-1 draw was far from satisfactory.
...
Yet, as Arsenal grew increasingly desperate, frustration began to creep in.
That's when United struck.
Following a defensive clearance, United launched a swift counter-attack. Luke Shaw, sprinting down the left flank, received a pass from Mbappé and quickly surged past the halfway line.
Spotting Bruno Fernandes positioned between Sokratis Papastathopoulos and David Luiz, Shaw delivered a pinpoint diagonal ball toward the Portuguese playmaker.
Bruno raised his hand to signal for the pass and raced forward, with Luiz hot on his heels.
At the edge of the penalty box, Bruno used his body to shield the ball from Luiz and controlled it with his chest.
But just as he prepared to turn and shoot, the referee blew his whistle.
"The referee blew the whistle for a foul on Arsenal's David Luiz. He clearly tugged Bruno's shirt as Bruno was turning with the ball. However, Bruno doesn't seem happy with the decision. He had already started his run and clearly thought the referee should have played the advantage rule instead of stopping play at that moment."
"This decision indeed feels disadvantageous for Manchester United. Bruno was well on his way to shaking off Luiz and driving into the box, which would have resulted in a one-on-one with the keeper. Instead, a dangerous attacking opportunity has been interrupted."
...
Today's referee, Mike Dean, is notorious for his eagerness to issue cards. After a brief and symbolic protest, Bruno quickly retrieved the ball and prepared to resume play.
The last thing Bruno wanted was to risk a needless yellow card.
After placing the ball down, Bruno tried to take the free kick quickly. However, Dean immediately blew his whistle again, gesturing that the ball could not be played until Arsenal's defensive wall was set.
Bruno, visibly frustrated, could only shake his head and jog back to his position. His reaction was caught on the broadcast, and the commentators found it amusing.
"Haha, Bruno is as cunning as ever, trying to sneak in a quick free kick. But Mike Dean wasn't having any of it and stopped him in his tracks. Bruno looks a little deflated by that!"
"But you have to admit, this free kick position is still very dangerous."
"Manchester United will likely have Bruno take it. He's their go-to man for set pieces."
...
Bruno is Manchester United's first-choice free-kick taker, known for his precision in both free kicks and corners. When he's on the pitch, almost no one else gets the chance to step up.
As United's players moved into the box, even İlkay Gündoğan joined the crowd, signaling that this would likely be a cross into the area.
Despite this, Arsenal left players stationed around the edge of the box, wary of Bruno attempting a direct strike. After all, he had scored from distance on numerous occasions.
Once Arsenal's defensive wall was set, the referee stepped back and blew the whistle.
The ball left Bruno's foot with speed, curving over the wall and toward the back post. Arsenal's central defenders, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and David Luiz, were tightly marking United's aerial threats like Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelöf.
However, Arsenal's young defender Bukayo Saka, tasked with covering the back post, was caught off guard. João Cancelo, United's Portuguese right-back, used his blistering pace to break free.
Cancelo leaped high at the edge of the six-yard box, towering above the Arsenal defense. His leap made him appear almost superhuman, as though he had risen above everyone else on the pitch.
Meeting Bruno's perfectly placed free kick, Cancelo sent a powerful header hurtling toward the goal.
The ball struck Cancelo's head and changed direction sharply, slamming into the back of Arsenal's net.
...
"GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOALLLLLLLLL!!!!!!"
"70th minute! Manchester United have taken the lead again! João Cancelo with a magnificent header!"
After scoring, Cancelo pointed toward Bruno, urging him to join in the celebration. The rest of the team quickly swarmed around them, reveling in their success.
"What an incredible leap!"
"Cancelo isn't the tallest player, but his jumping ability is extraordinary."
"The replay shows how perfectly Bruno delivered that free kick and how Cancelo timed his jump with precision. Their chemistry is undeniable, leaving Arsenal's defense completely unprepared."
"This goal was the result of two players reading each other perfectly."
United's players huddled together near the touchline, celebrating what felt like a game-winning moment. After being on the back foot for much of the second half, they capitalized on this set-piece opportunity to regain the lead.
2–1.
On the sidelines, José Mourinho couldn't contain his excitement, turning to his assistants and exchanging high-fives.
This goal, coming at a critical moment, all but sealed the victory for United. Mourinho quickly made his second substitution, bringing on Mason Greenwood for Marcus Rashford to maintain energy in the attack.
Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had no choice but to respond. Five minutes later, he replaced Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with Matteo Guendouzi in what seemed like a conservative move. However, Saka was pushed forward to form a 3-4-3 attacking shape.
Arsenal threw everything they had into the final minutes of the match, relentlessly pressing forward.
United, under intense pressure, shifted to a defensive setup. Mourinho replaced Gündoğan with Virgil van Dijk, transitioning to a 5-4-1 formation.
The defensive reshuffle proved effective, as United weathered Arsenal's onslaught and held on until the final whistle.
