Chapter 764 - Chapter 764: A Grueling Schedule

Chapter 764: A Grueling Schedule

When the referee blew the final whistle, the Emirates Stadium fell silent, save for the ecstatic cheers of the thousands of traveling Manchester United fans.

On the pitch, however, United's players looked utterly exhausted. Even Bruno Fernandes could barely stand as his legs trembled visibly.

Arsenal's relentless pressure in the final stages of the game had been overwhelming, so much so that United could barely mount a counterattack.

Yet, thanks to their disciplined defense and collective effort, Manchester United held firm and fended off Arsenal's attacks. Every player had given their all, leaving no room for complacency.

The result? A hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory for United. Arsenal's players, on the other hand, appeared disheartened as they walked off the pitch.

This crucial win temporarily reduced the gap between United and Liverpool to just one point in the Premier League standings, as the title race remained fiercely contested.

The following day, Liverpool responded with a 2-0 home victory over Sheffield United, restoring their four-point lead, although United still had a game in hand.

With the conclusion of Matchweek 21, the grueling festive fixture period officially came to an end. However, there was no respite for Premier League teams, as the FA Cup third round awaited them next.

For United, the draw was less than kind—they were pitted against a formidable Wolves side that had performed admirably in recent seasons. To make matters worse, the match was an away fixture at Molineux.

Although the festive schedule had ended, United's upcoming fixtures were no less demanding.

January's Demanding Schedule

In the remaining days of January, United faced:

2 FA Cup fixtures (if they progressed).2 Carabao Cup semifinals against Manchester City.4 Premier League matches, including clashes against Arsenal, Liverpool, and other mid-table challengers like Wolves and Burnley.

In total, United had a staggering 9 matches to play in January, with several high-stakes encounters.

...

January 4th: FA Cup Third Round

Wolves vs. Manchester United at Molineux.

Just 67 hours after their grueling battle against Arsenal at the Emirates, United faced Wolves. Furthermore, only 72 hours after this match, United were set to meet Manchester City in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal.

Aware of the tight schedule, José Mourinho made wholesale changes to the starting lineup, though Bruno Fernandes remained in the XI.

At Molineux, Wolves took the initiative, keeping United under constant pressure. On the back foot for much of the match, United struggled to assert themselves.

Bruno was forced to drop deep repeatedly to aid the midfield, limiting his chances to influence the attack.

Wolves, under Nuno Espírito Santo, fielded a near full-strength squad, featuring stars like Rúben Neves and Pedro Neto, with veteran João Moutinho on the bench. Their cohesive and high-energy style made it difficult for United's second-string side to gain a foothold.

Despite Wolves' dominance, their poor finishing spared United from a potential heavy defeat.

Bruno, however, refused to give up. Despite his visible fatigue, he tirelessly ran up and down the pitch, chasing every chance and urging his teammates to keep fighting.

By the 85th minute, the scoreline remained 0-0, and Wolves began to ease off the pressure, seemingly content to settle for a replay at Old Trafford.

United, however, had no interest in adding another game to their already packed schedule. Bruno, in particular, was determined to find a breakthrough.

...

The Decisive Moment

Wolves' Moroccan midfielder Romain Saïss, tasked with marking Bruno, relentlessly shadowed him throughout the match. Alongside Rúben Neves, Wolves' midfield suffocated Bruno's space and opportunities.

But as the game wore on, fatigue crept into Wolves' ranks, and their defensive intensity waned. Bruno sensed his moment approaching.

In the 88th minute, Wolves' Adama Traoré, desperate to prove himself, attempted a risky dribble past Juan Mata and Fred. However, Mata's tenacious challenge dispossessed him cleanly.

Fred quickly recovered the ball and sent a low pass forward to Bruno.

With his back to goal and Saïss close behind, Bruno instinctively knew he couldn't afford to turn. Instead, he used his right foot to deftly flick the ball to his right while spinning left, executing a brilliant "man-and-ball separation" move to leave Saïss behind.

"An incredible piece of skill from Bruno!" shouted the commentator.

"Manchester United are on the counterattack! Bruno Fernandes has broken free down the right!"

...

Bruno raced onto the ball, teeth clenched in determination, and surged toward Wolves' goal.

Rúben Neves, the first defender back, rushed to block him. But as Neves closed in, Bruno pulled off a sudden fake shot, cutting sharply inside and leaving Neves scrambling.

With one swift motion, Bruno shifted the ball back onto his left foot and bypassed the outstretched leg of his Portuguese teammate, entering the penalty area unmarked.

"Bruno has beaten Neves! He's in the box, one-on-one with Rui Patrício!"

Rui Patrício's experience as a goalkeeper was evident. The moment Bruno Fernandes broke past Rúben Neves, Patrício decisively charged out of goal, timing his advance perfectly to close down the shooting angle.

However, at 34 years old, his reflexes were not what they once were. Before he could close the gap, Bruno deftly chipped the ball over his head.

The ball arched beautifully, sailing past the goalkeeper and slowly descending toward the goal. Wolves defender Conor Coady scrambled back, desperate to clear the ball, but ultimately only managed to crash into the net along with the ball.

Whistle!

"Goal stands!"

"BRUNO! BRUNO!!"

"In the 88th minute, Bruno Fernandes scores for Manchester United!"

"This is a well-deserved reward for his tireless efforts throughout the match."

"What a brilliant individual display—Bruno single-handedly dismantled Wolves' defense."

"1-0, Manchester United take the lead!"

"This might just be the decisive goal!"

"Indeed, with a rotated lineup, United found it incredibly tough to play away at Wolves. Bruno, in particular, was tightly marked throughout the game. Wolves manager Nuno Espírito Santo had declared before the match that shutting down Bruno was their defensive priority. Yet, the United captain once again delivered a performance that left everyone in awe."

"His fighting spirit is truly commendable. Inspired by his leadership, Manchester United's players, despite being under pressure for most of the game, never gave up. Now, their perseverance has paid off!"

"Wolves, on the other hand, were overly conservative, especially in the last 10 minutes. It seemed they were already preparing for a replay at Old Trafford."

...

Finally, the referee blew the full-time whistle.

1-0, Manchester United secured a dramatic victory thanks to Bruno's late heroics, advancing to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

At the final whistle, a visibly exhausted Bruno collapsed to the ground, having given his all.

"Congratulations, Bruno." Wolves' veteran midfielder João Moutinho, who had come on as a substitute, approached Bruno while removing his shirt to exchange it.

At 33 years old, Moutinho had been introduced late in the game when Wolves were settling for a draw. His role was to help control the tempo and preserve the result.

Moutinho executed Nuno's instructions well, nearly securing a replay for Wolves, but Bruno's late strike sealed their fate.

Despite leading Wolves' late rally, Moutinho and his teammates ran out of time to find an equalizer.

"Thank you," Bruno said as he got to his feet, removing his shirt to hand it to his national team compatriot and senior.

Thanks to Bruno's decisive goal, United advanced to the FA Cup fourth round, where they were drawn against League One side Tranmere Rovers, a considerably more favorable matchup.

...

January 7th: Manchester United vs. Manchester City

Three days later, at Old Trafford, Manchester United hosted Manchester City in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semifinals.

The previous weekend, City had also fielded a rotated lineup in the FA Cup. However, unlike United's hard-fought victory, City cruised to an easy win over League Two side Port Vale, allowing Pep Guardiola to focus all his resources on the derby.

If Manchester United are Arsenal's bogey team, they have similarly been a nightmare for Manchester City.

Since Guardiola took over as City manager in the summer of 2016, his team had only managed one win in 14 matches against United. The rest included 2 draws and 11 losses, a dismal record highlighted by City's humiliating 1-draw, 5-loss record in the 2017-18 season.

With their Premier League title hopes all but extinguished this season, City had shifted their focus to cup competitions. The Carabao Cup, already at the semifinal stage, was a more immediate target than the FA Cup or Champions League.

United began the game strongly, dominating the opening 10 minutes.

Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring in the third minute, converting a fine assist from Ilkay Gündoğan.

Three minutes later, Bruno returned the favor, assisting Harry Kane to double United's lead.

Up 2-0, it seemed like United were in complete control. However, Bruno urged his teammates to stay focused, knowing City's capabilities.

City responded fiercely. By the 32nd and 37th minutes, Bernardo Silva scored twice to level the match at 2-2.

In first-half stoppage time, a long pass from Virgil van Dijk found Bruno in the box. Controlling the ball with precision, Bruno turned and fired a powerful shot to restore United's lead at 3-2.

However, in the 61st minute, Kevin De Bruyne equalized again for City, bringing the score to 3-3, which held until the final whistle.

The draw left United in a precarious position, needing to secure a result at the Etihad Stadium in the second leg—a daunting task.

...

January 11th: Manchester United vs. Norwich City

After three grueling matches, United finally faced a relatively weaker opponent.

On January 11th, United hosted Norwich City, the Premier League's bottom club.

Despite being the reigning Championship winners, Norwich struggled in the top flight, managing just 3 wins, 5 draws, and 13 losses in their first 21 games, earning a mere 14 points.

Even with significant rotation, United dominated from the outset, with Bruno leading the charge.

In the 27th minute, Bruno delivered a perfectly timed pass to Juan Mata, whose cross found Marcus Rashford. Rashford volleyed home to give United the lead.

Early in the second half, United struck twice in three minutes to extend their advantage.

In the 52nd minute, Brandon Williams was fouled in the box, and Bruno converted the resulting penalty to make it 2-0.

Two minutes later, Mata's corner found Kylian Mbappé, who headed in to make it 3-0.

Despite losing Rashford to injury in the 59th minute, United continued to dominate. In the 76th minute, Bruno's cross forced Norwich defender Max Aarons into an awkward clearance, which fell to Mason Greenwood, who fired a low shot into the net to seal the win at 4-0.

The scoreline held until full-time, securing United a comfortable victory and much-needed respite after a challenging run of fixtures.
