Chapter 769 - Chapter 770: Joy Turns to Sorrow

Chapter 770: Joy Turns to Sorrow

Neither Bruno nor Gündoğan had any doubt about their target: the second ball that Harry Kane would head back into play.

Mbappé received the ball on the right flank and attempted to dribble past Azpilicueta. However, the experienced Spanish defender gave no quarter. Calm and focused, Azpilicueta displayed excellent one-on-one defensive skills, forcing Mbappé to shield the ball and pass it back.

João Cancelo surged forward into the attacking third, taking possession. With a quick glance at the box, he saw Harry Kane signaling for the ball. The English striker had positioned himself well and was ready to receive. Cancelo didn't hesitate, opting for a 45-degree cross into the penalty area.

Unlike low crosses aimed at runners facing the goal, the 45-degree cross was more suited to players with their backs to the goal. As such, the ball required a subsequent touch to create a clear scoring chance.

Rüdiger closely marked Kane, denying him any chance to turn. Christensen anticipated Kane's headed layoff, while Matić and Reece James tracked Rashford, who had surged into the left-side channel.

With limited options, Kane opted for a header, directing the ball back toward the onrushing Bruno Fernandes.

A Battle for the Second Ball

Mateo Kovačić was the first to react, intercepting the second ball before anyone else. However, as he attempted to control it and seek a pass, Gündoğan, quick on his feet, dispossessed him with a deft touch, poking the ball forward into the box.

Bruno, who had initially closed in on Kovačić to apply pressure, quickly adjusted his movement. Gündoğan's interception sent the ball rolling into an open space, and Bruno sprinted to meet it.

In the chaos, Chelsea defenders scrambled to regain their shape. Around Bruno were Kovačić, Matić, Reece James, Christensen, Rüdiger, Kane, and Gündoğan—creating a crowded and frenetic scene near the box.

Amidst the confusion, Bruno found himself with a sliver of space. Behind him was Matić; to his right, Kovačić and Gündoğan; to his left, Christensen, Kane, and Rüdiger. Ahead, however, lay an open path toward the goal.

With no immediate challenge from Azpilicueta or Jorginho, Bruno seized the opportunity.

Bruno's Moment of Brilliance

Reacting instantly, Bruno shifted the ball to his right and burst into space, with Kane shielding Rüdiger and preventing the defender from closing in.

As Bruno approached the edge of the box, he spotted a clear shooting lane. Without hesitation, he unleashed a right-footed strike, opting for a low, bouncing shot.

"Kovačić wins the second ball, but Gündoğan steals it away!"

"Bruno reacts—he's in space, moves right—he shoots!!!"

"GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOALLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!"

The ball ricocheted off the ground just before reaching the goal, wrong-footing Chelsea goalkeeper Caballero despite his full-stretch dive. The ball nestled into the net.

2-0!

The 86th minute, and Manchester United had doubled their lead!

Unbridled Celebration

Bruno collapsed briefly to the ground after striking the ball but quickly got up, sprinting toward the corner where the traveling United supporters were seated. His arms flailed as he celebrated, shouting with uncontainable joy.

This was the goal that effectively sealed the victory—a dagger to Chelsea's hopes so late in the match.

Sliding to his knees at the corner flag, Bruno clenched both fists tightly and roared toward the United fans, who erupted in ecstasy.

His teammates charged toward him, engulfing their captain in jubilant embraces, each player visibly elated.

On the Sidelines

In the technical area, José Mourinho erupted with joy, leaping into the air before turning to embrace his assistant Faria. The coaching staff and substitutes celebrated with equal fervor, knowing the significance of the goal.

The goal wasn't just a statement of United's superiority—it was a testament to their resilience, tactical discipline, and Bruno's brilliance.

This late strike gave Manchester United a comfortable cushion and virtually ensured their victory. At 2-0 in the dying minutes, the match was all but decided.

Before this goal, Manchester United had been playing very defensively. Had Chelsea's relentless attacks continued, it would have been difficult to keep their goal intact.

Now, the dynamic was entirely different. Even if Chelsea managed to score, United would still maintain their lead, and time was running out for the home side.

Despite being outnumbered in the stands, the two or three thousand traveling United fans created a deafening roar, chanting Bruno's name. At this moment, fans from over 100 countries worldwide, glued to their screens, were celebrating Bruno's goal and watching him and his teammates revel in the success on the sidelines.

Frank Lampard, visibly frustrated, knew he had done everything he could. From defending against United's attacks to deploying specific tactics to nullify Bruno, he had prepared meticulously. Yet, Bruno had still found a way to score.

Cursing under his breath, Lampard returned to the home dugout, where assistant coach Jody Morris patted him on the shoulder, urging him to maintain composure.

United Prevail at Stamford Bridge

Manchester United left Stamford Bridge with a 2-0 victory. Even Chelsea's late surge and attempts to mount a comeback proved fruitless.

United's win marked their fourth victory over Chelsea this season, leaving Lampard frustrated and prompting him to criticize the referee in his post-match comments.

Chelsea's manager claimed the referee had failed to award Chelsea a clear penalty that could have leveled the match and possibly turned the tide completely against United.

José Mourinho wasted no time countering Lampard's accusations, calling them absurd. "The foul by Kanté was clearly outside the box. Awarding a free kick was the correct decision," Mourinho argued.

"I don't understand why he's demanding a penalty that simply didn't exist."

The master-and-apprentice rivalry continued off the pitch, with neither giving an inch.

Lampard insisted Chelsea deserved at least a draw at home, while Mourinho countered by pointing out United's superior possession and shot count. However, the reality was that neither side had created many opportunities, with Chelsea managing nine shots to United's twelve.

Both teams had executed their tactical plans to near perfection, neutralizing each other. The game saw few clear-cut chances, with Chelsea managing just two shots on target compared to United's three.

Post-Match Praise and Criticism

Lampard highlighted Batshuayi's contributions, noting his importance to Chelsea's efforts. Meanwhile, Mourinho singled out Bruno Fernandes as the key to United's victory.

"In Bruno's eyes, I see determination, fighting spirit, and an unyielding desire to achieve greatness," Mourinho remarked.

The verbal sparring between the two managers added another layer of intrigue to the Premier League drama.

With Liverpool's league match postponed due to an FA Cup replay, United's victory reduced the gap at the top to just one point—temporarily, at least. This reignited hope among United fans that the league title was still within reach.

A Missed Opportunity at Goodison Park

Perhaps the prospect of returning to the summit of the Premier League after 12 rounds of relentless pursuit made United's players a bit too eager. A week later, they were unexpectedly held to a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park by Everton.

The match was an early fixture for Round 28, moved forward to accommodate United's upcoming League Cup final.

United endured a nightmare start.

In the third minute, David De Gea's clearance was blocked by Calvert-Lewin, with the ball ricocheting into the net. United found themselves trailing 0-1 in shocking fashion.

De Gea's uncharacteristic blunder stunned everyone. As one of the world's most highly regarded goalkeepers in recent years, he had built a reputation for his extraordinary reflexes and ability to make miraculous saves.

But this moment was a stark departure from his usual brilliance.

"As a manager or teammate, you'd want to kill him," remarked Manchester United legend Roy Keane, serving as a BBC pundit.

"What was he waiting for? If you're going to clear the ball, do it faster. He's an experienced goalkeeper; this kind of mistake has no excuse. If it were up to me, I'd substitute him at halftime and wring his neck in the dressing room."

Keane's biting criticism underscored the frustration felt by United's fans and players alike.
