Chapter 771: A Twist of Fate
Fortunately, David de Gea quickly redeemed himself for his earlier blunder.
The unexpected goal dampened Manchester United's morale while boosting Everton's spirits as they launched an aggressive assault on United's defense.
Just two minutes after the goal, former United center-back Michael Keane sent a long ball forward, and de Gea made a crucial save by denying Calvert-Lewin's 10-yard effort.
Having regained their footing, United began to counterattack.
In the 8th minute, Fred cut into the left side of the box and delivered a cross that was deflected out. Bruno Fernandes' 20-yard strike then cannoned off the crossbar, sending a chill through the 40,000 Everton fans at Goodison Park.
United continued to attack relentlessly, with Rashford, Kanté, and Mbappé all missing opportunities. Everton barely managed to maintain their narrow lead.
Finally, in the 31st minute, United equalized. Kanté set up Bruno Fernandes, who unleashed a thunderous shot from 30 yards out on the left, driving the ball into the bottom-left corner to make it 1–1.
A Late VAR Decision
The second half turned into a stalemate as both sides created chances but failed to capitalize.
In the dying moments of injury time, Everton came agonizingly close to securing a dramatic victory.
In the 92nd minute, Calvert-Lewin's shot from the right side of the penalty area deflected off Harry Maguire's body and into the bottom-right corner. However, Gylfi Sigurdsson, lying on the ground in an offside position, was deemed to have interfered with play by VAR. The goal was disallowed.
Everton's coach Carlo Ancelotti protested vehemently to the fourth official, expressing his frustration with the decision. His words crossed the line, earning him a red card and an early exit.
Title Race Heats Up
With this draw, Manchester United tied Liverpool on points but moved to the top of the table on goal difference, albeit temporarily.
United's stay at the summit lasted less than four hours.
Liverpool reclaimed the top spot with a narrow 1–0 victory over Norwich City in their rescheduled Matchday 26 fixture. The Reds now held a three-point lead over United with a game in hand.
After Liverpool's win, many of their fans flocked to Everton's official website to thank their city rivals for holding United. Some cheekily declared Everton as the key contributors to Liverpool's quest for their first Premier League title.
However, Everton fans were not amused. Instead of celebrating the draw against a dominant United side, they found themselves the target of unwanted praise from Liverpool fans.
Some Everton supporters fired back, cautioning Liverpool fans against celebrating prematurely. "It's only February," they wrote. "There are still three months left in the season. Be careful you don't celebrate too soon and end up losing to United."
Champions League Shock
While it's too early to tell if United will overturn Liverpool's lead, Liverpool themselves experienced a shocking defeat that gave Everton fans a reason to smirk.
On February 19, Liverpool traveled to Atalanta for the first leg of their Champions League knockout tie.
The Italian side wasted no time, with captain Alejandro Gómez firing a dangerous shot just four minutes into the game, narrowly missing the target.
Four minutes later, Pasalic's one-on-one effort tested Liverpool's goalkeeper again, as Atalanta set an early tone of dominance.
In the 16th minute, Gómez provided an assist for Hans Hateboer, who scored with a close-range effort to put Atalanta up 1–0.
Just before halftime, Pasalic set up Josip Iličić, whose stunning long-range strike doubled Atalanta's lead. The hosts entered the break with a commanding 2–0 advantage.
After the restart, Atalanta continued their relentless attack.
In the 57th minute, Remo Freuler curled a Robben-esque shot into the far corner from the edge of the box, leaving Liverpool's goalkeeper Alisson helpless.
Six minutes later, Pasalic assisted Hateboer again, who scored his second of the night to make it 4–0, effectively sealing the game.
Although Salah pulled one back for Liverpool in the 66th minute, a three-goal deficit left their hopes of overturning the tie in the second leg hanging by a thread.
A Stunning Upset
This result sent shockwaves across Europe and the footballing world.
Liverpool, the unstoppable force of the Premier League with 25 wins in 26 matches, was thoroughly dismantled by an Atalanta side that had only scraped into the knockout rounds as Serie A's fourth-placed team.
Pre-match pundits overwhelmingly favored Liverpool, whose domestic dominance included a record-breaking 17-match winning streak. Yet Atalanta defied expectations, delivering one of the most memorable upsets in recent Champions League history.
Even Everton fans, who had warned Liverpool against overconfidence, were left dumbfounded at how prescient their warnings turned out to be.
Premier League Action Resumes
On February 21, United hosted relegation-threatened Watford at Old Trafford in Matchday 27.
The Hornets played conservatively, aiming to grind out a draw. United dominated possession and attack but had to wait until the 42nd minute to break the deadlock.
Bruno Fernandes was brought down in the box by Ben Foster. The Portuguese star stepped up and calmly slotted the penalty into the bottom-right corner.
This marked Bruno's 33rd Premier League goal of the season and his 10th penalty.
United doubled their lead in the 58th minute. Bruno's incisive through ball found Rashford, who chipped Foster from a tight angle on the left to make it 2–0.
In the 75th minute, Greenwood, coming off the bench, exchanged a one-two with Bruno before firing a pinpoint shot into the top-left corner from 14 yards out, sealing a 3–0 victory for United.
