Chapter 770, The General Commander
The three shouted loudly, their bodies struggling violently.
But no matter how they resisted, they couldn't break free from the skeletons' grip and were dragged off bit by bit.
By now, the others had basically figured out what happened.
These three had given photos to outsiders—essentially betraying the base—and had been caught by Qi Hancai.
Under everyone's watchful eyes—
the three were dragged into the flowerbed, and the sound of blades piercing flesh rang out.
The pleas and screams ceased.
They were really killed.
Everyone's face turned pale, fear growing in their hearts.
Qi Hancai turned back to the others, her voice cold: "Don't forget who pulled you out from the zombies. Back then, you didn't even have a bite to eat. Now that you're full, you think of selling out the base? There's only one outcome for betraying us—death."
"You all know the situation out there. The General Rescue Team is buying food from us. Out of all the bases in the world, this is the only one where people are well-fed. Use your brains. If you don't want to eat, and would rather go to some outside base and be a dog, don't drag the rest of us down."
"That's the rule now. Betray the base or our people—death. No matter who you are, no exceptions."
Qi Hancai shouted, her tone still ice-cold. Someone beside her translated.
Some longer phrases still needed a translator.
Everyone listened in silence, but they could feel her anger.
Heads down, they responded in unison, "Yes!"
......
At 5 PM, the convoy approached the shelter base.
The first thing they saw was a towering concrete wall, its surface worn and scarred. Razor wire topped it, and armed guards patrolled above.
"Damn, finally back. I've been on edge the whole time."
"Another day alive—what a blessing."
"We got a decent haul of food this time. Should last a while."
"So many people in the city. This amount isn't enough. I don't know where those guys get their food from—able to trade so much."
"Dongmin, what's up with you? Why so serious today?"
"Don't even ask. The photo thing got screwed up. No idea how I'll explain this."
"They assigned a bunch of people. One mess-up doesn't matter."
As they spoke—
the convoy neared the main gate. The guards checked each vehicle, and once cleared, the gate opened and the convoy drove in.
Inside the base, chaos reigned.
Tents and makeshift huts lined the sides. Ragged women and children knelt and begged for food as the convoy passed.
Their eyes were exhausted, numb—completely hopeless.
This is the main base?
Didn't seem much better than when they first saw Sangpo Port. Maybe just a larger version.
The convoy didn't stop and continued forward.
Then they entered another walled area—again, tall walls, razor wire, armed guards, and heavy weapons.
The women and children followed for a bit but didn't dare approach this inner wall.
The gate opened, and the convoy entered.
Buildings, basketball courts, even armored vehicles and special-purpose vehicles could be seen in the distance.
So this was the real base.
Kind of like Rentam City—split between inner and outer sectors.
A military base.
The outer area looked more like a slum.
......
The convoy stopped in front of a warehouse.
Workers came up immediately to unload supplies.
The others disembarked.
"Come on, let's eat at the canteen," someone called out.
Wu Heng shook his head. "You go ahead. I need to report in."
"You're acting weird today. Whatever—go late and there won't be any food left," the others said, walking off.
Wu Heng glanced at the convoy commander and signaled. Beni followed closely.
He sat for a while on a bench outside the basketball court.
Xiaoxiao, who had gone to scout, returned and whispered, "Uncle, there are a lot of weapons here. They seem more powerful than ours."
"Let me see what they've got," Wu Heng said.
Xiaoxiao entered his body, sharing her view.
She zipped through large warehouses, showing armored vehicles, helicopters, and even missile trucks with thick barrels.
Missiles!
They actually had that kind of hardware.
Xiaoxiao came back out, and Beni returned as well. "They met the General Commander and showed him your photo. He was really happy and promised everyone a promotion. Doesn't look good for you."
Wu Heng nodded and looked toward a nearby building. "He's over there, right?"
"Yeah."
"Let's go see what he wants with me." Wu Heng stood and walked toward the building.
He went upstairs, guided in secret by Beni, reaching the floor where the General Commander was located.
A woman—probably an assistant—looked him over and asked, "What's your business?"
"It's about the photo. I have important intel for the General Commander," Wu Heng replied.
The assistant eyed him again. "Wait here, I'll ask."
She soon returned. "Come on in."
Wu Heng entered the office. It was a sizable room, well furnished.
The middle-aged commander sat behind the desk, looking at his phone.
"What intel do you have? Speak."
"Commander, those people gave out fake photos. They knew about our plan," Wu Heng said.
"Fake?" The man's brow furrowed.
"Yes. Their base people told me so directly," Wu Heng stepped closer.
The assistant saw they were chatting normally, so she shut the door and left.
The commander asked, "You have the real one?"
"Of course." Wu Heng glanced at the door, flipped his hand, and placed a soundproofing kettle on the table. Then he said, "Restrain him."
Next moment, the commander's body went stiff, his face twisted. "You're not from our base!"
Wu Heng removed his mask and rolled his neck. "Commander, why are you investigating me? Tell me."
"Wu Heng! It's you!" The commander's face went pale. He yelled, "Guards! Help!"
Wu Heng sat down across from him, picked up the man's phone, and flipped through it casually.
Sure enough, his own photos were on there.
He tossed the phone into his spatial ring and watched the commander's face turn darker.
So this was the guy in charge. And this base had a lot of people.
What now?
How could he take control of this base more easily and effectively?
"Wu Heng, name your terms. I'll agree to everything," the commander pleaded.
Wu Heng looked up and simply said, "Kill him."
Crack!
The commander's neck twisted with a pop. His body went limp and collapsed with a thud.
