Chapter 9 - CHAPTER 9:Become The Assistant PA

Mrs. Donovan didn't return to the house that night. Mr. Brooks had informed Lyra that the Madam had travelled to England and would not be back until the next week. She became nervous knowing the Madam wasn't around to get her out of any trouble she was definitely going to get herself into till the next week.

She also realized it was going to be just her and Julian for two weeks. Okay well, Mr. Brooks and Miss. Goergia were around too. Julian got home and headed straight to his study. Lyra wondered why he was always in that study. He worked all day and got back home to keep working. Such a workaholic.

It was soon dinner time but Lyra didn't bother going down to eat. She still couldn't bring herself to face him and the Madam wasn't around. The dinner would be awkward and awkward had never been her favorite moment. She sat on her bed and tried to finish her drawings from earlier.

After she was sure he had eaten dinner, she got out of her room and sneaked towards the kitchen. She slowly walked down the stairs and was a few meters near the kitchen when she heard the familiar voice that made her shiver. "So you're a thief now." Huh? What was he doing here? Why does she always get caught? She slowly turned around with a nervous grin. He was seated on a sofa with his legs crossed like a king. As usual, his face was clouded with no emotions. This was the first she had seen him wearing something other than a suit. He was always on suit, even when they had breakfast and dinner but right now, he was wearing a black shirt and trousers.

His hands were folded together and he stared plainly at her. "I, well... I'm not a thief, I just..." "But you were sneaking around like one. " He cut her off. Lyra found it annoying whenever he cut her off like that. "I was hungry." Julian thought it was funny how he always found her cute. He wondered why she had to sneak around just to get food when she could have just eaten at the dinning earlier. He noticed she didn't look at him even while trying to defend herself. Lyra kept her on the floor unable to look at her supposed 'husband'. She couldn't help herself from remembering the kiss at the courthouse. She wanted so much to hit her head on the wall to forget it but it kept popping up whenever she saw him. She wondered if he thought about it as well. He probably didn't.

Her mind suddenly remembered the clothes and she looked up to ask him but quickly took her eyes back down when she saw that he was looking back at her. "Um,, sir I was wondering. Why did you buy me clothes?" Julian narrowed his eyes at her question. It thought it was weird that she asked. "So you don't go disgracing me outside. It's not normal that the wife of a Donovan wears the type of clothes you possess." Lyra was a bit offended by his words but she thought it was a good reason to get her clothes. She sighed at the word 'wife'. She still couldn't believe she was now married and to a man she didn't love. Although it was just a contract marriage, it was very much legal and valid. So until three months was over, she was his wife. It was funny that she had come here for a maid job but ended up marrying her boss. Her rumbling stomach reminded her of the reason she was there.

She heard movements and slightly raised her head to see Julian strolling towards the stairs. She let out a sigh of relief. When she was sure he was out of sight, she stood up straight and ran into the kitchen.

Lyra woke up the next morning feeling like she slept on the clouds. She got up and opened the curtains letting in the clear morning breeze. From the look of things, she seemed to have woken up earlier than expected. She took a pause remember her first task. She still needed to get a job in his company. She hurried into her bathroom and took a quick bath for the first time since she got there. He was probably already prepared to go to work.

She got out and searched her closet for something formal she could wear to a company and she finally settled with a green button up shirt and a black skirt. She brushed her hair and tyed it in a bun after dressing up and picked up a bag to go. She looked in the mirror and loved her appearance. She rushed out of her room and took the stairs to the living room.

She sighted him and Caleb on their way to the door so she quickly called out. "Sir!" Julian slowed down and turned around. His eyes caught sight of the woman as she ran down the stairs. He noticed she was dressed formally and became confused. Where was she going dressed like that? She rushed towards him and stood next to Caleb who also had a confused look on his face. "Miss. Levine, are you going somewhere?" Caleb asked her. " Yes. " She simply replied him and he nodded.

"I'm going with you two. " Caleb's eyes went wide when he heard her words. "Where?" Caleb thought she must have hit her head somewhere. "The office." Julian scoffed at her delusional words. She was funny to think he would agree to that. "Miss. Levine, what are you talking about? You can't go with us to the office. " Lyra looked up at Julian who had a small frown on his face. She gulped nervously. Be bold Lyra. " I told you I wanted to work here as a maid but you refused. I can't stay at home all day doing nothing so I decided that I'm going to work with you. You can just make me your personal assistant. " Her words were sharp enough to cut Caleb's throat. Lyra realized what she had said when Caleb's expression changed.

She quickly tried explain her intentions. " I'm not trying to steal your job or anything. I just think it's an easy job. I can be your assistant. I'm learned and I'm sure I can handle it. Think about it, someone to take some of the weight off your shoulders. We... " "No." She was cut short by Julian who wasn't finding her joke funny. But Lyra wasn't joking at all. She looked up at him with a frown. " Why? " Julian thought it was obvious. " You're not qualified. " He told her and she scoffed. 'Not qualified to be an assistant but qualified to be a wife? You've been underestimated much more than you thought Lyra. ' she thought to herself. "I'm sorry Miss. Levine but you can't become an assistant by just asking. The boss doesn't accept females for this position." Caleb explained to her. It was true. Julian couldn't get close to a woman and a personal assistant was supposed to be at his side at all times so a female couldn't be his personal assistant.

Julian turned to walk away but paused at her next words. "If you don't hire me, I'll go work somewhere else. Maybe as a maid in another mansion or even a nanny and since I'm now registered as Mrs. Donovan, I'll use my new name." Julian's face became cold. Was she threatening him? " Wait a minute Lyra, wouldn't that be bringing disgrace to the Donovan's? " It seemed like she was talking to herself but he knew her words were directed at him. He walked back to where she stood and brought his face close to hers. His eyes were ice cold but Lyra felt like she was in hell when he stared at her. "You wouldn't dare." Lyra was afraid but she wasn't going to give up so easily. "Well, I want to work so bad that I actually would." She said slowly and regretted her words immediately. 'what are you doing Lyra?' she screamed in her head. Julian stood straight and looked at the woman who had just threatened him. When did she become so bold. He sighed inwardly. " Fine." Lyra's eyes lightened up with his words. He finally agreed to making her his assistant PA. Meanwhile, Caleb couldn't believe his ears. He felt his boss was acting different lately. No matter the threat, Julian Donovan never went back on his words, but he just did. "Great. Let's go, I don't wanna be late on my first day." Lyra said excitedly as she walked outside leaving behind a dumbstruck Caleb and an annoyed Julian...
