As Kyogre drew closer to Mt. Chimney — where Groudon lay dormant — the speed of Groudon's awakening increased dramatically. The volcano's eruptions also became more intense by the second.
Torrents of magma spewed violently from the crater, cascading over the surrounding land. In moments, a massive wildfire spread across the area. Countless terrified creatures, sensing imminent danger, fled desperately toward safer ground.
Meanwhile, Sato was still flying for his life. With Crobat pushing its speed to the limit, he did his best to avoid human settlements as he raced straight toward Mt. Chimney.
Kyogre was still hot on his trail. Within its summoned weather domain, thick storm clouds rapidly spread above Sato, and terrifying bolts of lightning began to rain down upon him.
Fortunately, Sato had Pikachu — whose Lightning Rod ability made all the difference. During the chase, Pikachu continuously discharged the enormous reserves of electricity stored within its body, acting as a living lightning conductor.
Even against the monstrous thunderstorm Kyogre had created, Pikachu could still hold out a while longer.
And Pikachu, fearless as ever, was clearly furious about being relentlessly hunted.
At the same time, Sato decided it would be better to put that stored energy to use than let it dissipate. So, he commanded Pikachu to launch a counterattack against Kyogre.
Then, to Sato's astonishment, Pikachu managed to direct his lightning upward — discharging it into the clouds above. The electricity then spread through the storm itself, conducting across several kilometers to strike Kyogre behind them with a devastating Thunder.
Though Pikachu's level was relatively low, the mutated Thunder Orb's power amplification made his Electric-type attacks truly terrifying.
And because the electricity in the clouds had originally been generated by Kyogre's own storm, Pikachu's Thunder carried even greater destructive force. By rough calculation, the move's total power output reached a staggering 900. (120 × 2.5 × 2 × 1.5)
Seeing Pikachu's mastery over such immense electrical energy, Sato couldn't hide his shock. At once, he activated his system's detection function to scan Pikachu.
Sure enough, as he suspected, Pikachu had successfully learned Thunder, and the mutated Thunder Orb within its body had also undergone a new transformation.
....
Item: Mutated Thunder Orb (100% Charged)
Effects:
- Increases Pikachu's Attack and Special Attack by 2.5×.
- Grants continuous Charge effect.
- Grants Static ability.
- Greatly enhances Pikachu's control over Electric-type energy.
- Grants Electric Terrain.
Restrictions:
- Cannot be used by non-Golden-tier Pikachu or those lacking the Lightning Rod ability.
- Cannot be recharged using non-Legendary electrical energy.
Note: This orb once belonged to a powerful Level 83 Pikachu. Thanks to its Lightning Rod ability, it absorbed the electricity of Legendary Pokémon such as Zapdos, Raikou, Thundurus, and Zekrom during fierce battles, eventually fusing that power into itself through a series of extraordinary encounters.
....
It was clear now that Pikachu's ability to unleash Thunder across vast distances came largely from the orb's tremendous boost to his Electric energy control.
After absorbing the enormous current generated by Kyogre's storm, the Thunder Orb had finally revealed its ultimate form.
Though Kyogre's body was thick-skinned and sturdy, even it winced under Pikachu's divine, punishment-like lightning strikes.
Of course, Pikachu couldn't possibly defeat Kyogre outright — but he did manage to cause it some real trouble. After several successful long-range Thunder hits, that "small trouble" began to show its effects.
Faint arcs of electricity began flickering across Kyogre's body. Each time they did, its massive form stiffened, muscles locking up as paralysis took hold. A few times, it nearly lost its ability to stay airborne and almost plummeted to the ground.
Yes — Pikachu had managed to inflict paralysis on Kyogre. Even though it was an ancient super-legendary Pokémon, Kyogre was still a living creature — and no creature, however divine, was immune to all abnormal statuses.
Thanks to this, Sato narrowly escaped Kyogre's relentless pursuit time and again. By now, he was barely seven or eight kilometers away from Mt. Chimney.
But then something unexpected happened. As soon as Kyogre entered within ten kilometers of Mt. Chimney, it suddenly stopped chasing. It hovered in midair, its gaze shifting from Sato to the mountain — which, curiously, had just ceased erupting.
In Kyogre's massive eyes flickered unmistakable fear and hatred.
It had sensed the presence of its eternal nemesis. No matter how much it expanded its storm domain, the thunderclouds refused to spread within a ten-kilometer radius of Mt. Chimney.
Then, before Sato's astonished eyes, a colossal hand emerged from the crater of the volcano, gripping its edge. Moments later, an enormous, fearsome head surfaced from within the molten depths.
In mere moments, a gigantic red beast rose fully from the crater — its gaze locking onto Kyogre in the sky, radiating the same burning hatred.
The moment it emerged, it immediately unleashed its own weather domain at full force.
Instantly, even though it was still night, the clouds within several kilometers dissipated. The temperature soared, and Fire-type energy filled the air, crackling and alive.
This towering red titan — capable of forcing Kyogre's storm domain back several kilometers — was, of course, Groudon, the ancient super-legendary of the Hoenn region. It had awakened from its deep slumber upon sensing its age-old foe.
Now, after countless eons, the two primal adversaries stood face to face once more. A titanic battle was inevitable.
"Looks like I was right — Groudon really was sleeping beneath Mt. Chimney. That means I'm safe for now… but where is Rayquaza? If it doesn't show up soon, I'll be in serious trouble."
Hovering in the air atop Crobat, Sato watched Groudon emerge and, instead of relief, felt an uneasy tightness in his chest. His eyes darted from the raging land below to the eerily silent sky above.
He had seen the devastation caused by the volcanic eruption — entire regions around the mountain had been reduced to chaos and ruin.
If Groudon and Kyogre began their ancient war here, unchecked, the entire area would become a living hell.
And it would all be his fault — yet there was nothing he could do. His only hope now rested on Rayquaza, the one being who could always appear at the last moment to stop the clash between land and sea.
That feeling of helplessness gnawed at him, a heavy weight pressing down on his heart.
Fortunately, though Rayquaza was often the last to arrive… it was never late.
Just as Sato — and countless nearby creatures — braced for the inevitable clash, a blinding green streak tore through the sky.
A massive emerald dragon descended from the heavens, exuding an awe-inspiring pressure that blanketed the land. It positioned itself between Groudon and Kyogre in an instant.
The moment Rayquaza appeared, the searing heat and torrential rain both vanished, and the night sky returned to calm.
Immediately, both Groudon and Kyogre turned their fury toward Rayquaza. As if by mutual instinct, the two ancient rivals struck simultaneously at the newcomer.
Under Groudon's command, a colossal pillar of magma erupted from the crater, solidifying into a molten blade that shot toward Rayquaza.
At the same time, Kyogre's body blazed with blue light. In a heartbeat, that light condensed into a barrage of massive azure energy spheres, raining down upon Rayquaza like a torrential storm.
