Mei's tone remained soft, but there was a hint of urgency hidden behind it, like someone who didn't want to be stuck in an awkward moment for too long.
Aoki nodded slowly. His eyes briefly met Mei's, just for a fraction of a second, but it was enough to convey an unspoken answer.
"Yes, let's continue our journey," Aoki finally said, then turned and began to walk along the path that stretched out before them.
The path was muddy from the rain the night before, and the morning sunlight filtered through the gaps in the leaves above them, creating dancing patterns of shadows on the ground.
The air felt humid, with the aroma of wet earth and dew that had yet to dry from the leaves. Small birds chirped faintly in the distance, and occasionally a gentle breeze blew fallen dry leaves toward their feet.
...
...
...
Time slipped by quickly, like a river that never stops flowing. It had been several days since Mei signed the contract with the Kuchiyose creature.
Since that moment, the atmosphere between Aoki and Mei had slowly but surely changed. If before they were merely trusted companions, now they began to seem like two individuals who were quietly starting to seek each other out, even in their silence.
They spent several nights under the open sky, sitting around a campfire that flickered like shooting stars. Their conversations were not long, but they always felt warm. While Aoki cleaned his sword, Mei would sit across the fire, hugging her knees, occasionally glancing at Aoki silently.
As Tetsu fell asleep with a soft snore and Ajisai had already sunk into her dreams, only Aoki and Mei remained awake, as if there were an invisible thread binding their time together.
...
...
...
After passing through several small villages and dense forests filled with the sounds of crickets and nocturnal animals, they finally arrived at the edge of the harbor.
The harbor was located at the western tip of the country, facing directly out to the open sea that stretched like an endless blue carpet.
The salty air hit their faces, and the roar of the waves crashed against the wooden pier, which was starting to rot in some places. Despite the world being on the brink of war, the harbor remained alive, like a stubborn creature refusing to die.
"Finally arrived!" Tetsu exclaimed with a sigh of relief, his hands raised high as if welcoming a personal victory. Sweat dripped from Tetsu's forehead, but his face was beaming.
Ajisai emerged from behind the bushes, her eyes wide with wonder at the sight before her. Large ships lined the pier, their sails lazily fluttering in the sea breeze.
People bustled about, some carrying large crates, while others led donkeys laden with goods on their backs.
Mei stood still at the side of the road, her eyes gazing at the harbor without blinking. The sea breeze blew through Mei's long hair, making the strands dance freely in the air. Aoki turned to her, noticing how Mei's gaze seemed to pierce through the horizon.
"Shall we?" Aoki said softly, a simple word wrapped in a thin smile.
Mei turned, her face serene, then nodded. "Yes."
They walked together, passing along the path usually taken by horse-drawn carriages. The ground was hard and rocky, the wheels of the carriages having made deep ruts along the way. On the left and right, trees began to disappear, replaced by wooden houses, warehouse buildings, and simple stalls owned by merchants.
The harbor gate stood tall, made of old wood with faded carvings of sea dragons. They passed through the gate, entering a world different from the one they came from.
Inside the harbor, the atmosphere was so lively. Samurai moved about, wearing loose kimonos and light chest armor, their katanas sheathed at their waists. Some stood like guards, while others appeared busy organizing the ship's cargo.
