Chapter 45 - What if Apocalypse days

We had just managed to get out of the hospital and I was collecting necessary stuff to escape when the Irene's family came and took my friends to a safe place. I didn't want to go so I made myself invisible to stay hidden. Irene understood me so she waved goodbye as did the others. I put everything back and walked away from the city. I walked past hoards of zombies. Some of them looked like they were bitten as they woke up. The others as they were heading to the office. A few in recreational outfits like swim wear, a mascot outfit and in one case a woman in diving gear. Construction projects were left half finished I wanted to go home. I walked down to see the door was no longer attached to the wall. I kept walking in. I saw a man eating a small child. He didn't bother to look up. I went upstairs and lay down on my bed and tried to get some sleep. I couldn't sleep so I took a shower and a change of clothes. When I heard something go boom. I looked out the window to see the house a few doors down went boom. I extended my hearing. The military was going to demolish the neighbourhood. I had to move as quickly as possible. I walked out as fast as my legs allowed. I realised I was barefoot when I got out. I took a deep breath and tried to go back but the military dropped bombs and the houses went boom one by one.

So I took the long route to the convenience store. I found shoes but there were no water bottles to wash my feet. I tried the bathroom. The taps were dry. The tanks were bone dry. I kept walking till I heard a stream. I kept walking till I was knee deep in it. I cleaned the dirt off and used a discarded shirt to wipe my feet clean. Then casually slipped on the socks and the sneakers. Then I walked towards the hospital hoping to get a few blood bags. The building imploded as it came into view which meant redirection towards the clinics. They were all picked clean. So I had no choice but to head towards the Citadel. I found the place abandoned but pristine. The food was long gone but the blood bags were all there. The walk in fridge was working. I took three blood bags and sank my teeth in. I sat down to learn from the memories. One was an engineer. I learned a few new tricks. Repairing machinery using everyday items. The next was a free diver. I learned how to hold my breath and how to conserve energy for maximum output. The last one was an escape artist. I learned lock picking, getting out of handcuffs, straight jackets and many more. I woke up from the trip down memory lane and walked around looking for something to do. I saw the piano was still here so I played a tune or two. Then I ran to the library to see if there was anything I could read. Unfortunately the library was empty. The vast ocean of knowledge was gone. I sat down and tried to think of anything.

I decided to leave the citadel and go as far as I could. I saw drones hovering outside the city limits. I saw men and women armed to the teeth. They had one order. Shoot anyone trying to leave. I pulled out a manhole and walked the subterranean path. I used echolocation and found the safest route out. It led to the dam. I kept walking till I heard zombies. Like I mentioned they stepped aside to let me pass. I got out to see the good news bad news scenario. The good news is I am officially out of the city but the bad news is there is no path. Whatever is in the tunnel comes out and falls a few hundred yards into the river below. I felt a weird sensation in my soles and my palms began to twitch. I took a deep breath and took a swan dive. I was close to the waters when I remembered that I could fly. I rose up in the air and I made sure to be invisible as I searched for a path to take. The dirt road was the safest since it is less likely to be populated. The zombie population was rising. There was an undead group every few feet. Some were stationary while others were moving. The hunger pangs kick in every few minutes. Everyone was taking a different route for safety's sake. I slowly landed and walked casually to avoid being detected by satellites and drones.

In a few days I recognized the type of people depending on their transport. The scientists and military were travelling on zombie proof eight wheelers or helicopters. While civilians were travelling in school buses, ambulance, terrain vehicles and vans. None of them drove bikes and trucks. People can steal stuff from trucks and zombies can snatch people off bikes. The only one on foot was me. I had to be extra careful of booby traps. According to the walkie talkie I managed to nab. I heard of a group called the grabbers. They like to lay traps and then rob people blind. They avoid certain areas because the army would kill them or the zombies would eat them. So mapping the area isn't going to be easy. I switched off the radio for safety as I found a city completely abandoned. The largest construction was an almost completed apartment building. It was shaped like a cylinder with the center emptied to assist with the ventilation. It was bare walls and the windows on the inside were glinting. The windows facing outwards were smashed. The place resembled a labyrinth. I will have trouble getting out if I meet the grabbers. I made myself invisible and climbed the walls like a spider before I moved forward. The place was quiet till I reached the lower levels. The sound was muffled even with my enhanced hearing.

Five levels down I saw a man wearing a bandana, a dirty ripped shirt and shorts. Next to him was a bald man with a machete and a taser. He was using it to poke and tip things over. He wasn't interested in being subtle. They searched the building and left. I decided to go to upper levels and recuperate on the ceiling. A few minutes later I used echolocation and discovered the zombies had flooded the roads so the raiders were back. They were trying not to get eaten. I made myself visible and walked out of the building. I kept walking till I felt lost so I used echolocation. I heard a woman's voice. She was telling her daughter to watch her carefully and make sure she didn't lose her. The voice was coming from behind so I can assume she was referring to me. I turned a corner and made myself invisible again. They both swore badly and looked everywhere. They promised to find me. They were hoping to go wherever I was going. I am just wandering aimlessly. I was hoping to find a place to call home. As fun as this was I was getting bored. I watched them search everywhere before hiding in a diner. They were behind the counter when the zombies came out. I made myself visible as I walked right through them. The human population was too preoccupied to notice. Everywhere I looked I saw people huddled with family.

I missed mine so I turned around and went back towards the city. I remembered the officer saying they were taken to the maximum security prison. I know the general direction since mom would point that way as she would yell at Shaw for his ungentlemanly behaviour. She explained it was on the west side of the city but it was isolated. The road heading in that direction was laced with mines so I flew in the direction. I looked for familiar landmarks and found none since they were all demolished. So I used echolocation hoping to hear their voice so I would have a general direction to go to. I heard mom's voice and my instincts took over as I flew as fast as possible. I reached the prison and found the gates were locked. The generators were blown off so I had to climb the wall to get in. I raised my hand as I walked towards the building. The sniper on top lowered his weapon and the doors opened to let me in. An old man in pyjamas greeted me and he asked me to explain how I got inside. I explained that I had free climbed the wall. The man stared at me like I had lost my marbles but decided not to say anything.

He took me to the mess hall where there were thirty others. My mom, my friends, their family and some strangers. Irene gave me a hug and so did the others. He gave me kitchen duties and asked me not to wander off. He explained that certain sections were off limits. He was going to fix the radio hoping to call search and rescue to get us out of here. I gave mom a hug and then I hugged everyone I know before sitting down to eat. The others wanted to know what life was like outside. I explained about the grabbers. Some rumors about a cult and a farming community. So far I have only seen zombies. Irene laughed as she asked me if they still step aside when they see me. I smiled, "Brick wall and proud." The adults were curious. Mom dearest asked me not to make stuff up. Irene explained how we got out of the school. The others were impressed. I explained my blood disorder made me inedible. Which is why I can go through them and they will happily leave me alone. Not a scratch and no bite marks either. The adults were impressed. The doctor took me to the med bay for examinations. She explained to the adults waiting outside that I was not infected. Mom gave me a hug and asked me not to wander off. I requested a bath and she took me to the shower blocks. Afterwards we roamed around till we reached solitary confinement. The flap was opened to let air in. But I can hear a heart beat. So I asked if anyone was inside. A pair of blue eyes looked towards me. They were familiar but I couldn't remember who till he spoke. It was Shaw.
