William could hardly believe he was actually back on Earth. He was convinced this was just an illusion, some trick created by the demon inheritance trial. Still, everything felt so real—the way the doorman reacted only made him doubt himself more.
"What the hell happened? The police investigated your disappearance, and no one ever found your body. Are you alive?" the doorman asked.
It all seemed way too real to be just a dream.
'Did I really come back?'
That thought was impossible to ignore. William tried to calm himself and talk to the doorman, keeping it casual.
"What do people think happened to me?" William asked.
"They thought you were dead, obviously. But I guess that's not true."
The doorman came over and gave him a hug. They'd known each other for a long time. The old guy was a genuinely good person, and William had always liked him.
