"Mr Billie mentioned that you told him you've been pursuing me," I frowned as I traced my finger over the dove with adoration. "Danilo, it doesn't make me feel comfortable knowing that you took the fall for me."
"And what should I have done?" his eyebrows furrowed. "If Pa found out he wouldn't be happy to know you and I were involved with one another before you got your job. It would look like I had let you in because I knew you. If he knew we were romantically involved it would have made things ten times worse. If there's anything Pa loves more than his family it's his reputation. The rumors of nepotism wouldn't have gone over well.
"I'm not saying he would have seen the worst possible outcome but if word got around your career would have been over. That's not something myself or my family can fix if people create a narrative about you."
