"Yeah… about that," I said, my smile turning a bit strained.
"Oh?"
"Well, you see," I explained, "they might have, uh… found out that you gave me liquor."
"And how did they do that?" he asked, a look of genuine curiosity on his face.
"You try lying to a room full of suspicious, overprotective women and see where it gets you," I retorted.
Azazel winced in sympathy. "Yeah, I'm glad that's you and not me."
"Hmm," I said, stroking my chin thoughtfully. "I think I know a few powerful MILFs that might like you."
"Fuck you too, kid."
"You wish," I shot back instantly. My expression then turned serious. "But I need to know. You sent Vali after Kokabiel, correct?"
"Yeah," he confirmed, his own demeanor becoming more guarded.
"Keep an eye on him," I said, my voice low. "I get a strange feeling from him."
"Oh? How so?"
"I have a skill that allows me to see if someone is keeping a big secret from everyone," I explained carefully. "And I know what you're thinking, that it's probably because of his heritage, being the grandson of one of the original Devil Kings. But it's not that. And it's not just the secret, either. I have a feeling that he may betray you. I'm not saying he will, but… just keep your eyes open around him."
Azazel looked like he was deep in thought, his usual carefree attitude gone, replaced by the calculating mind of the Governor of the Fallen Angels. "Hmm," he murmured. "Okay. I'll keep what you said in mind."
They then left, the bell chiming their departure. I let out a long breath and went into the back room to grab a snack. As I unwrapped a chocolate bar, I heard the bell chime again. I went back out to see who it was, and standing in the middle of my shop, looking around with her usual blank expression, was Ophis.
"Hello," she said simply.
"Hi, Ophis," I replied, leaning against the counter. "So, I heard you went to see a friend."
"Technically, brother," she corrected.
I froze mid-chew, the chocolate turning to ash in my mouth. I slowly put the half-eaten bar down on the counter. "I can't help but ask," my voice was very quiet, "why?"
"I just wanted to tell him about you."
I started sweating bullets. He's going to kill me. The Great Red is going to travel across dimensions just to incinerate me for sleeping with his sister. Then, I saw it, a small, almost imperceptible smile playing on her lips. She was enjoying this.
"Don't worry," she said, her voice laced with amusement. "I kept our mating a secret."
I let out a huge sigh of relief, my shoulders slumping. "Don't scare me like that."
"He won't hurt you," she stated as if it were a simple fact.
"He's the Great Red," I countered, my voice rising with a hint of panic. "A badass, legendary Apocalypse Dragon that's more powerful than you!"
I saw her pout a little, her cheeks puffing out slightly. I had fucked up.
"That's not true," she said stubbornly. "I'm better than him."
"Yeah, in bed maybe," I muttered under my breath, "but in combat, I'm not so sure."
"Baka," she pouted, a word she must have picked up from one of the girls. She then grabbed my arm with surprising strength. "We're going to go meet him now."
"But I don't want to die!" I yelped, trying to plant my feet.
"I'm stronger than him," she insisted, tugging me toward the door. "Don't worry."
"That remains to be seen," I mumbled.
"Baka," she pouted again, but she didn't let go.
"Oh yeah," Ophis said, stopping her tugging and tilting her head as if remembering something trivial. "I almost forgot."
"What's that?" I asked, wary of the sudden shift.
"Why did you hide that you're part kitsune?"
I did a full-on, cartoonish double-take. My brain sputtered, trying to find a plausible excuse. "Oh, uh… uh, well," I stammered nervously, "knowing you, you probably would have… taken advantage of my fox parts, and, well…"
My face was burning at this point. I felt her small arms wrap around me in a hug from behind.
"Does this mean you won't?" I asked hopefully.
"Nope," she said, her voice muffled against my back. "I'm still going to."
"Why is fate so cruel?" I wailed, throwing my head back in mock despair. Then, a far more pressing and horrifying detail slammed into my brain. "Wait," I said, my voice filled with genuine panic. "Doesn't Great Red live in the Dimensional Gap?"
"Yeah," she confirmed. "Why?"
"I can't go there! The chaos will rip me apart! I'll die!"
"Oh, that's right," she said, a flicker of understanding in her eyes. "You didn't know."
"Know what?" I asked, my voice cracking.
"Voltaris is a Dragon God," she explained simply. "Therefore, as his host, the ambient chaos of the Gap won't affect you. You are allowed to be here."
Just then, Voltaris materialized on my shoulders, looking smug.
"Voltaris!" I hissed. "You could have said something!"
"You never asked," he retorted coolly.
I let out a long, frustrated sigh. "Um, I'm just curious," I said, turning my attention back to Ophis. "Can Great Red… turn into a human, like you?"
"Yes," she said, her expression turning serious. "But not many know that. So don't say anything."
"Okay, my lips are sealed."
"Also," she added casually, "did Voltaris tell you that he and my brother are sworn brothers?"
I blinked. "Hmm, I think I would remember that one. So, no. He hasn't."
"You have your secrets, I have mine," Voltaris said, echoing my earlier words back at me.
"Dick," I muttered.
"Ass," he shot back.
"Just be warned," Ophis said, ignoring our bickering. "My baka of a brother is a lot like Voltaris, but he can be more serious at times."
"Gotcha," I said, steeling myself. She took my hand, her small fingers lacing through mine.
