I spun around, scanning the wagon, the road behind us, the endless hills. Had he left without saying goodbye? Had he returned to the forest? Had he—
A soft, familiar grumble drifted up from the sacks of vegetables. "Would you stop flailing? I'm trying to sleep here."
I nearly sobbed with relief. The fairy poked his head out, his white hair mussed, his gray eyes heavy with drowsiness. "You humans and your dramatic goodbyes," he muttered. "Exhausting. I've been trying to nap for the past hour, but someone—" he shot me a pointed glare "—keeps crying and making profound realizations."
I laughed—a wet, shaky sound that was half-relief, half-joy. "I thought you'd left. I thought you'd gone back to the forest."
