Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Into the Scar

Chapter 3: Into the Scar

The Riftwastes stretched out before them, an endless horizon of jagged rock formations and turbulent skies, where swirling tendrils of dark energy twisted in and out of rifts. The land had been destroyed centuries ago, and now it was nothing more than a barren, radioactive desert—twisted and malformed by the ruptures in space and time.

Kael stood at the edge of the camp, his eyes fixed on the distant horizon. Beside him, Lira adjusted the straps of her pack, the sharp metallic clink of her armor breaking the stillness. She didn't speak at first, her face shadowed by the wide brim of her helmet. The air was thick with tension, a subtle unease hanging between them like a weight.

"You sure you can handle this?" Lira finally asked, her voice cutting through the silence.

Kael didn't look at her. "I've been in worse."

"Sure you have," she said with a short laugh, but there was no humor in it. "But nothing like the Scar. The rifts here aren't just dangerous. They're alive."

Kael's hand brushed against the pouch where he'd secured the Ethereal Crystals he'd harvested earlier. "I know what I'm doing," he said flatly. His tone made it clear that he had no interest in hearing her thoughts on his ability to survive.

Lira didn't press him further, though Kael could feel her eyes on him, measuring him. The unspoken question was there, lingering in the air: What are you hiding?

Kael's grip on the strap of his pack tightened. He wasn't here to answer her questions. He was here to survive, and the rest was just noise.

The journey into the Scar was a silent one, the landscape growing more warped with each step. The ground beneath their boots cracked and shifted, revealing glowing veins of Riftstone, a volatile material that surged with chaotic energy. It was no surprise that these rifts existed in such a place—where the fabric of reality itself had been torn asunder.

They passed through the first few rifts without incident, the shifting patterns of the Riftstone keeping them on edge. But the deeper they ventured, the more the atmosphere seemed to change. A low, pulsing hum vibrated through the air, and the ground seemed to tremble beneath their feet.

Kael was hyper-aware, eyes darting over the shifting terrain. He felt the faintest stir of his Nexus, like a whisper at the back of his mind. It had been quiet for a while, but now it pulsed, a cold presence that matched the strange energy in the air.

Lira, walking a few paces ahead, suddenly stopped, raising a hand in a silent command. Kael froze, instinctively drawing a knife from his belt.

The air seemed to grow thicker around them, heavier, as if the very rift they stood in was closing in. The ground beneath their feet split open with a violent crack, sending a wave of dust into the air. From the fissure emerged a monstrous creature—its body like a mass of writhing tendrils, covered in dark, shimmering scales. Eyes that gleamed with a hungry malice flicked toward them.

Kael's breath caught in his chest. A Riftspawn.

It was a beast like no other—an aberration formed from the Rift's chaotic energy. It didn't follow any natural laws, its form constantly shifting and warping as it moved. The scales reflected the flickering light of the rift energy, casting erratic shadows across the landscape. Its jagged maw opened wide, revealing rows of teeth that seemed to stretch out too far, too many, to ever be fully counted.

"Shit," Kael muttered under his breath.

Lira was already moving, pulling a blade from her side and flicking her wrist to summon her Nexus. The air around her shimmered as mirrored reflections of herself danced in the air, each one a perfect copy of her form.

"Get ready," Lira snapped, launching herself forward with impossible speed. Her reflections blurred into a cluster of chaotic illusions, each one surrounding the Riftspawn, confusing it, disorienting it. "You're not getting away from this one so easily."

Kael hesitated, his eyes locked on the beast. His hand tightened around the knife's hilt, his pulse quickening. He could feel the Nexus stirring, a cold, insistent pressure against the edges of his mind.

Do it.

Kael's breath stilled. The whispering voice was back, like a shadow creeping into his thoughts, urging him to use the power.

He shook his head, trying to ignore it. He wasn't ready.

But as the Riftspawn reared back and slashed at Lira's illusions, a crackling bolt of dark energy shot out from the rift, tearing through the air toward her. Without thinking, Kael moved.

In an instant, he reached out, his hand grasping the air between them. The rift energy shimmered as he twisted the distance around the bolt, pulling it away from Lira's path and sending it careening harmlessly into the distance.

He had no idea how he'd done it—no idea how the rift energy had responded to his will—but it was enough. The Riftspawn hesitated for a moment, confused, and Kael seized the opportunity.

He lunged forward, stabbing his knife into the creature's underbelly. It screeched, a horrific sound that rattled Kael's bones, but the creature was far from done. It lashed out, its tendrils whipping toward him.

Lira's illusions circled the beast once more, creating openings for Kael to strike. His hands were shaking, but he didn't stop. He couldn't stop.

Finally, with one last swing of his knife, Kael struck a weak spot between the Riftspawn's rib-like tendrils. The creature let out a final, agonized cry before collapsing into a heap, its body dissolving into a glowing pool of dark energy.

Kael stood over the creature's remains, breathing heavily, his mind racing. The Nexus inside him pulsed in response, the cold presence louder than ever.

Lira approached him, wiping the blood from her blade. She didn't say anything for a long moment, her gaze flicking over Kael with an unreadable expression.

"Not bad," she finally said. "For a first-timer."

Kael didn't reply, his attention still focused on the dissipating Riftspawn. The Nexus hummed within him, eager, waiting.

One step closer to power.

Lira raised an eyebrow at Kael, studying him for a moment longer before turning away. "Keep up. The Scar's just getting started."

Kael followed her, but a nagging thought refused to leave his mind. What is this Nexus?

As they pressed deeper into the Scar, Kael couldn't shake the feeling that the power inside him was more dangerous than he'd ever imagined. And sooner or later, it would demand a price.
