Chapter 341 - Chapter 338 ~ Debt of Secret Jutsu

Toshiro stared, his triumphant grin fading into shock. "What is that?!"

His wooden staff was locked against something glowing—golden chakra formed into a solid rod, blocking his strike completely.

On the tree branch above, Natsurama saw it and thought, "It's pure chakra... solid chakra." Manifested and held stable without dispersion, Natsurama observed, his experienced eye tracing the weapon's form. "What kind of control method allows this level of stabilisation?"

His gaze sharpened further.

"It differs from Uzumaki sealing chains in principle. Those chains draw from bloodline affinity—innate, instinctive. This... this is deliberate construction. Shape manipulation taken to an extreme."

At ground level, Kohinata's eyes tracked the weapon carefully. He'd seen a demonstration of this technique earlier in training, but witnessing it in actual combat revealed its true potential.

"Incredible..." Kohinata's voice held quiet amazement. "Seeing it in action is something else entirely."

Kaori's eyes were wide with curiosity. "What is that?"

"Solid chakra," Kohinata replied.

Toshiro's hands tightened around his wooden staff. The glowing weapon in Ryu's grip radiated unfamiliar, impossible power. "What is that?" His heart pounded. "How is he doing that?"

Toshiro charged.

Ryu didn't retreat. The golden weapon became a blur of precision strikes in rapid sequences, each one calculated. Toshiro blocked, wood meeting chakra.

CRACK.

Each block felt like striking stone that was harder and denser than anything natural.

Toshiro pivoted, releasing his staff with one hand. His free fist shot forward with explosive chakra surging through his knuckles—Senju-style Taijutsu.

His fist struck the golden staff dead centre.

BOOM.

The impact generated enough force to shatter boulders. Shockwaves rippled outward from the point of contact, explosive chakra impulses designed to concentrate destruction at a single point.

But the chakra dispersed across the entire surface of the staff instead—spreading outward like water splashing against glass. The concentrated, localised impact that defined Senju-style Taijutsu scattered harmlessly, dampened and absorbed with ease. But the leftover force pushed Ryu a few steps back with no damage.

"What?!" Toshiro's eyes widened. "The impulse—it didn't concentrate! It just... spread out!"

"That's new! Since when could you do that?!" Toshiro shouted, pulling his hand back and gripping his staff with both hands again.

Ryu didn't answer. He pressed the attack relentlessly, giving no opening for recovery.

Then mid-swing, something changed… The golden staff extended.

Toshiro's eyes widened. One moment, Ryu's weapon was within predictable range—perhaps a meter at most. The next moment, four meters of golden chakra shot toward him in a straight line like a spear thrust.

He dodged by a hair's breadth.

Natsurama's eyes narrowed from above, recognition flickering across his weathered features.

"That extension... like Hiruzen's Adamantine Staff transforming length at will."

Ryu stood three meters away—well outside normal striking range. Toshiro's guard, positioned for a meter-long staff, meant nothing.

The extended staff didn't stop. It changed direction mid-strike, sweeping horizontally in a wide arc.

Toshiro twisted aside, narrowly avoiding the second pass.

But he was off-balance now, his stance compromised. The staff reversed direction again, flowing like water, and swept low.

The extended staff took his legs out from under him.

He crashed hard. The golden staff's tip hovered above him for a fraction of a second—Ryu could have ended it there.

Toshiro rolled with an explosive chakra burst. Training instinct—never stay down. He sprang back to his feet, gasping, and charged again. Had to close distance before another transformation.

Toshiro's fist came in with explosive chakra, aiming to shatter the extended weapon.

The golden staff contracted—flowing like liquid light from four meters to one, the excess chakra compressing into thickness instead of length. What had been a whip became a club.

It caught his explosive punch dead centre.

No crack. No bend. A sharp CLANG rang out like steel on steel. Toshiro's knuckles screamed in protest.

Ryu countered in the same fluid motion—the staff extending, pushing Toshiro again.

Ryu charged again with multiple fast strides, and randomly the staff would extend, trying to attack his face. Out of nowhere it went straight to his chest, breaking the rhythm.

The tip struck Toshiro's chest. The air punched from his lungs. Blunt force, carefully controlled power. Not enough to injure seriously, but enough to demonstrate complete dominance. Ryu even used the footing of earth on the other side of the staff for greater stability and push.

Toshiro flew away from the impact on his chest and he landed on his back, rolled and regained his footing.

"That's not taijutsu!" Toshiro protested between blocks, his staff splintering further. "You're using ninjutsu!"

"I said taijutsu only," Ryu replied, the golden staff contracting to slip past Toshiro's guard. "Not 'no chakra'."

"Same difference!" Toshiro barely avoided a strike.

"Really?" Ryu's staff extended again, forcing Toshiro back. "Then what's Senju-style taijutsu? You channel explosive chakra through your strikes. That's closer to ninjutsu than this."

Recognition flashed across Toshiro's face—the argument made sense, but he was too busy defending to debate it properly.

"At least I don't reshape my weapon mid-fight!"

"My old staff broke. I adapted," Ryu replied, the golden staff contracting to slip past Toshiro's guard. "Still a blunt weapon—just made of chakra instead of wood."

Toshiro protested, "A blunt tool that extends and contracts at will!"

Ryu replied, "Still blunt. Still taijutsu. I'm not throwing lightning bolts or breathing fire."

Toshiro had no counter to that logic. He tried a different approach—dodging with a sharp sidestep and using acrobatic and unpredictable moves he'd clearly picked up from watching Ryu's own fighting style. Copied, not taught. The adaptation was impressive, even if it wasn't enough against an extending weapon with unpredictable range. He dodged the extended staff with flips and fast swipes. And tried to get near Ryu for a direct hit.

Ryu quickly contracted the staff, expecting a close-quarters attack. But Toshiro threw his staff at close range. It went straight towards Ryu's head when Ryu was aiming for his legs.

Ryu was impressed; others watching were too. However, Ryu slightly adjusted himself and dodged and caught the staff with his left hand at the end of it at the same time that Toshiro also dodged it with a breakdance-like choreographed flip above the staff using a hand.

Ryu smiled but kept the momentum of his swing of the golden staff and turned full circle, passing the momentum to Toshiro's stolen staff now in his other hand. Toshiro dodged Ryu's golden staff but then a swipe from the stolen staff came fast, throwing him to the ground on his back.

Toshiro tried to get up fast but Ryu extended his staff to pin him to the ground at the same time, pointing his stolen staff towards his face.

"Fine… you win," Toshiro said, managing a grin despite his exhaustion and loss.

Ryu lowered both staffs. The golden construct flowed smoothly back into his hand—energy returning to its source. He tossed Toshiro's wooden staff back to him.

The observers watched the reabsorption with particular interest, noting how smoothly the chakra returned to its source.

"What was that technique?!" Toshiro scrambled up, dusting himself.

On the branch above, Natsurama assessed the battle and thought, "The versatility rivals the Third Hokage's Adamantine Staff... but it's pure chakra manipulation, not a summon. The principle is similar to Uzumaki sealing chains—chakra given physical form—but shaped differently, with far greater adaptability." He looked at his grandson and thought, "He has also improved."

Kohinata thought, "The way he reabsorbed that construct… the chakra is not waste. What a powerful chakra control method."

Below, Ryu's response was measured. "It's a new secret jutsu I developed. I call it the Hamura's Yin-Yang Control Method."

Toshiro's face lit with interest.

"I can teach you," Ryu continued. "Not the full technique—I have promises to keep regarding that. But I can teach you a limited version that will help you optimise your jutsu."

Natsurama and Tashiro exchanged glances from above. Wordless communication passed between them. They had been to many wars and survived. They knew the importance of optimised execution and efficiency. Especially when surrounded by enemies and low on chakra. They dropped down from the branch, landing smoothly near the combatants.

Natsurama approached Ryu and said, "You don't have to…Secret jutsu are the foundation of any clan." Natsurama chose his words carefully. "That technique—it must be something you yourself came up with, since the Hamura clan is not known for having any secret jutsu."

Ryu smiled and said, "That's correct."

Natsurama continued, "Then it's yours to keep. Don't give it away lightly."

Ryu asked, "Then what are Senju chakra control methods and Senju-style Taijutsu? A secret jutsu or something else?"

The rhetorical nature of the question made Natsurama pause.

"They are secret techniques," Natsurama acknowledged. "But that was Tsunade's decision—the princess of the Senju clan. Not the clan's decision, not Toshiro's, not ours."

His tone gentled slightly. "You don't owe us."

"I'm just above average without Senju-style Taijutsu and my fuinjutsu," Ryu said, his voice firm. "If not for either of them, I would have died on my last visit to the Land of Rivers."

Everyone who heard Ryu thought, "Does he even know the meaning of 'average'?"

The pause held weight.

Ryu finished his sentence, "I'm just repaying their kindness."

Natsurama studied Ryu in silence. The moment stretched—weighing the boy's character.

"This boy... he understands honour. Debt. Loyalty. These aren't just words to him—they guide his every action. Rare in someone so young."

"What will you teach him?" Natsurama asked finally, his tone softer.

"I cannot teach him the full technique or this particular application of this chakra control method, as I have some promises to keep." Ryu's explanation was clear. "But I will teach him the control method used in this jutsu so that he can reinforce his jutsu using it."

Toshiro leaned forward intently, hanging on every word.

"Its specific application is Yang reinforcement," Ryu continued. "It uses Yang chakra to increase the intensity and power of your attack, but the chakra cost stays constant. It's somewhat different from the Senju clan method."

Toshiro's eyes widened. "So my Senju Taijutsu would hit harder without draining chakra faster?"

"Exactly. Since the Senju clan is full of life energy—abundant Yang affinity—you're ideal for this technique." Ryu gestured broadly. "You can creatively apply it to push your other jutsu, maximising their efficiency."

He added a clarification. "It's still fine—I'm not giving you the whole technique, just the chakra control method. You won't be able to do what I do, but you will improve your jutsu execution and efficiency."

Natsurama and Tashiro exchanged glances again. Communication passed between them wordlessly.

"You're not backing down." Natsurama's voice carried respect. "Very well. If you're willing to teach, he's honoured to learn. He will keep the technique a secret."

Tashiro nodded his agreement. "Thank you, Ryu."

Ryu turned to Toshiro directly. "Come with me to my home now. We'll start immediately. I hope you don't need permission for a sleepover."

Toshiro's face lit up. "Now?! Right now?!"

"No point waiting."

Toshiro looked to his father and grandfather. They nodded permission, approving the arrangement.

"Yes! Let's go!" Toshiro pumped his fist.

They walked together toward the Hamura compound—Ryu, Toshiro, Kaori, and Mukai Kohinata. All of them moving as a small group through Konoha's evening streets.

Evening had deepened into dusk. The thin crescent moon hung overhead, and more stars had begun to appear. The village settled into its night rhythm with closed shops, empty training grounds, and the warm glow of homes where families gathered for dinner.

Toshiro practically bounced with each step. The prospect of learning a new chakra control method—one different from his clan's traditional techniques—had him vibrating with energy and barely contained excitement.
